The Prytaneum was a fine location, full to the brim with activities and places of study. Beth had been to one or two yoga classes since she had arrived. But it was remarkably less forthcoming about what one was meant to do. So she had asked around and it seemed that one thing joining all Chosen of Hera was their amazing talent in the kitchen.

While Beth considered herself a worldly epicurean, she had to admit a certain lapse in her knowledge. She knew plenty about eating and pairing foods. She was not as savvy as to how one actually prepared said food. Still, it was galling to think that she would have been Chosen by Hera without the ability to boil water.

And so it was that Beth found herself in a practice kitchen teetering above a cutting board in four inch heels with a bag full of hapless fruits and vegetables. She had managed to cajole some ingredients from an accommodating Chosen of Demeter. At the moment, his name escaped her--a lapse that she would have to discreetly rectify, perhaps under the pretense of spelling his name correctly on a Thank You card--but due to his generosity, she felt that she was well on her way to doing right by her goddess.

At least, that was plan. But Beth was not entirely convinced that the chopping knife was without will of its own and it was slow going to cut the first head of lettuce for her salad. And that was without having to stop every few seconds to replay the 2 minute video tutorial she had up on her phone.

"It's not that easy!" She whined at her phone screen displaying a seemingly indifferent woman in her cute black and pink chef's jacket as the ehow expert pulled the head apart with her hands and then cut through the leaves as if they were butter. She looked down at her own rather sad, eviscerated lettuce. The cuts were jagged and tilted, some not fully through the heart of it, and she had pulled enough from the bunch that barely any green remained. "Why do I have to use two hands?" She muttered to herself, hunched toward the cutting board in a way that would have made her mother faint in horror. She was conscious of the way her shoulders had been pulled by frustration to nearer her ears than was strictly pleasing, but all of that paled in comparison to her need to force both knife and vegetable to her will.

Rory had just gotten off the phone with her parents and daughter, the call making her a little homesick. Not that she would give up this opportunity, but at the same time she wished she didn't have to lie to her family. It made her feel a little guilty every time she talked to them. Working in the gardens helped take her mind off of everything, as well as training and classes.

But now she just wanted to relax. Cooking or baking usually helped her do that, so she made her way to one of the practice kitchens in hopes she could find ingredients for her favorite cookies.

However, when she opened the door, it was clear that someone else was in there as they seemed to be talking on (to?) their phone. Rory started to leave to find another place to bake, but the woman seemed so frustrated. She couldn't help wanting to offer her assistance.

"Hi there," she said, a warm smile on her face. "Would you like some help?" She noticed the other woman was wearing stilettos and Rory, who could barely balance in chunky one inch pumps, was pretty impressed. And maybe a little concerned. She opened her mouth to offer a cautionary word about heels in the kitchen before thinking better of it for now. She didn't know this woman, and wasn't sure how she'd take her unwarranted opinion.

Beth jumped upon hearing someone else in the kitchen with her. This made the knife jump dangerously close to the left hand steadying the hapless head of lettuce. She quickly put the knife down on the cutting board before it had the chance to really do some damage. It took a moment for her to compose herself before she turned, attempting to inject some elegant nonchalance into the movement.

Beth was faced with a red head smiling kindly at her and offering her assistance. "Oh, I don't..." She moved her gaze back to her work and saw that there was no hiding the sorry state of the mutilated leaves. Besides, there was nothing more connecting than an exchange of knowledge. And she did want to make friends, didn't she?

Her cheeks warmed and she laughed a bit self-consciously. "I suppose I need a couple of pointers. I'm not exactly in my element here."

She paused as the tinny voice of the cook from the cell phone's speakers continued her instructions. "Oh, hold on!" She whirled and tapped the screen, trying to turn off the video, which took her a couple of times due to her nails.

"So...I'm Beth!" She announced, holding her hand out to the woman who was possibly about to change her life.
