He was getting alright with the throwing daggers: not great, but alright. Maybe it was from all the absent-minded tossing of odds and ends into trash cans, or games of darts at bars; maybe just a steady eye and a steady hand. It would have been easier, if he didn't have to carefully twist it just so such that it landed point first. He threw it at the dummy. It hit. And bounced out. Asher blew out a sigh, shuffling the daggers in his hands to line up another shot. Maybe this wasn't where he should be focusing -- but it was, at least, better than just standing around and waiting for something to happen. Even better than watching netflix in his room.

Not as much fun as Netflix and Chill, though. At least not with the right person. Mal found him and leaned a hip against the table to watch; he could never handle throwing knives, and he knew it. It was too bad. He wished he had a gun of some kind. A gun would be much easier. Distance, at least some kind of accuracy-- Mal heaved a slow kind of sigh, and crossed arms over his chest to watch. He waited until Asher had thrown again and wasn't in the process of lining up another throw before he spoke. "Hi." It tugged the corner of his mouth into something like a smile despite himself.

The point of his dagger hit the dummy at a slight angle, not a solid hit but a scratch, and nothing more. It made Asher grimace just a little. Worse when he realized it had been watched -- half-turning at the sound of Mal's voice to look at him, eyes narrowed. He still had a weapon in hand, and for a moment, he considered flinging it. He'd tested against his own hand more than once: it's not like it would hurt the man. He didn't. Just twisted the blade in hand and mimed it a little. "You're following me around, I feel like."

"It'd be a hell of a lot more fun if I was, frankly, but no. Just heard the sound, came to check it out." He pulled his hands out of his pockets and watched Asher mime with the little knife. He wasn't afraid of it. The sword he'd used before had been dulled, too. You could break someone's bone if you hit too hard, but it was the same as hitting someone with a stick. Accidents could happen, accidents were a given, he was sure, but-- it'd take work to make it happen.

Another moment, and then Asher straightened, giving up the game. He adjusted the little knives in his hand, head tipped to the side, counting how many he had and considering the field around them. Someone was swinging at a dummy, but it was some ways away; this was a quiet moment. "...want to give it a go?" He tossed one knife in the air and caught it, raising his eyebrows at Mal.

"Alright." Mal stripped off his suit jacket and laid it on the table. Might as well not tear anything; with his luck, of course, he'd still end up doing something like tripping or tearing out a knee. He tried not to think about it as he picked up a practice sword and stepped out. It was a quiet lull; no one would see if either of them did too badly.

Asher had been practicing. It meant that his first move was to hop a few steps back [an instinct anyway, when you were as small as him but prone to getting into fights] and let the dagger clutched between two fingers fly. This time, his aim was good, the little dagger spinning through the air to hit Mal with a solid little thunk. It made Asher grin, all at once. Maybe it surprised him. Weapon: Agile Ranged; +1 to hit, base 4 damage. HP: 47/47 DMG: 8

"Better practicing than I've been doing, I guess," was all Mal said, he skipped after Asher and swung and missed outright, and let his breath out through his nose in a huff. "Crap." It was a little sour, but only a little. Weapon: Balanced Melee; base 6 damage HP: 50 - 8 = 42DMG: 0

Asher danced back one step, and then another -- both eyebrows raised as he watched Mal swing and miss. It made him smile, an easily mocking smile, before he tossed off another weapon of his own. The goal, here, was to keep distance between them while picking away at Mal's defenses, and it seemed like he could do a good job of it. The dagger hit, anyway, even if it only hit loosely, more with the end than the blade, boinking off the man like a little bruising tap. He blinked, once, and then dove to recover it. He only had so many in hand, after all. Weapon: Agile Ranged; +1 to hit, base 4 damage. HP: 42/47 DMG: 2

"Har," was Mal's soft response, more to himself. Maybe swinging at an actual human being was unnerving; it was hard to tell just what he was thinking as he swung again -- and missed again. Certainly it wasn't anything complimentary to himself, if nothing else. Weapon: Balanced Melee; base 6 damage HP: 42 - 2 = 40 DMG: 0

"Are you afraid to hit me?" Asher ducked again, dodged, and flicked off another little dagger -- hitting Mal squarely in one shoulder. It made his eyes bright, pleased. He was getting pretty good at this, wasn't he? "I can promise you, I've never run into anyone else with that problem." Not that he sounded terribly worried about it. Weapon: Agile Ranged; +1 to hit, base 4 damage. HP: 42/47 DMG: 4

"Maybe I am." Mal said it mildly, except a beat after it he lunged and did manage to catch Asher, and catch him well, too. "Maybe I just needed you to run at the mouth a little more." He smiled when he said it; not exactly enjoying the fight, but he did like the banter. Weapon: Balanced Melee; base 6 damage HP: 40 - 4 = 36/50 DMG: 12

It drove a sound out of him, the surprised start of some comment cut short by suddenly being driven sideways, stumbling a little under the force of Mal's blow. He blinked, once, struggling to right himself -- and only once his feet were fully under him, again, did he launch another little dagger at Mal. "....lucky shot." Weapon: Agile Ranged; +1 to hit, base 4 damage. HP: 30/47 DMG: 4

Mal grinned-- not a bad grin, for all of that. It was still mischievous, maybe more than he had a right to be at this stage. "Maybe. Probably not, though." He didn't like the sparring so much, honestly, but now that he was thinking about it -- not so bad. Weapon: Balanced Melee; base 6 damage HP: 36 - 4 = 32/50 DMG: 6
