Honestly, she probably should have known better... but hey.
Going on nightly strolls along the beach and the stretch of nearby forest had become one of Lady's favorite pastimes as of late. Since the war had come and gone she'd seized more of her own independence and although both of her parents had initially expressed anxieties over her roaming they were hardly in a position to tell her no. Her open disregard seemed to only thrill Lieutenant to no end- she clearly wanted to be the favorite child still- but this was more than simple disobedience. She needed time to clear her head after being cooped up all day.
So here she was. It was a warm, cloudless night not too far off from the beach. Lady had toyed with the idea of strolling all the way down to town, but for tonight she was content to hunt small game to toy with and mind her own business. Finding a good place to perch she clawed her way up the trunk of a broad-based tree, resting on a wide branch with one paw hanging daintily down.
Something would pass eventually.

A pale shape darted through the moonlight, swift and moving with distinct purpose. It followed the dark female like a shadow, halting its pursuit if she showed any sign of checking her surroundings. It wasn't ready to be seen yet. No, not yet. Watch for now. Unseen. Unheard. Unsensed.
Glittering green eyes watched her every movement, the way the foliage brushed away from her fur in passing. The crunch of the bark as she sank her claws in to climb was particularly fascinating.
A tinier, pale, feline form followed the first. When the first paused, the second bound upwards to nestle within the Wini's dark locks, peering out with ominous red eyes. Mu would have rather been home, with a warm saucer of milk...and some meat...but the Wini wanted to come out here and well, she didn't trust him on his own. Just like no one trusted her, but perhaps for different reasons. Or perhaps not so different at all...
Notaku barely acknowledged the feline familiar taking up residence in his mane. His attention was wholly wrapped up in studying the female Wini up in the tree. He'd taken his refuge in the low foliage of a shrub and ignored the pricking branches as minor distractions. What was she doing? Was she just going to sit up there? Well, he could lay down here and watch her easily enough. Silently, he settled in, only his shining eyes visible, watching through the leaves if any managed to look directly at him.

Lady had not expected to see anything for some time; her usual hunts ranged from an hour to three depending on her mood, but it always took a while for anything to begin to move after she'd made her entrance. She let out a soft whuffle of air and settled, tail slowly winding back and forth in the still night.
For a while she barely moved, eyes just beginning to slide closed as if she were ready for a nap. A stray scent hit her nose suddenly however and she snapped to attention, fur on end all the way down her spine. It was unfamiliar- strange, even- and not something she had found before. Another demon?
Lady's eyes searched intently through the underbrush, revealing nothing at first glance. Although she was focused there was nothing she could immediately spot out of the ordinary, and the revelation only sent another agitated fidget through her frame. For the moment she remained silent, waiting to see if they would reveal themself to her on their own accord.

Notaku was content to stare for some time, unmoving and utterly fascinated by the still Wini in the tree. Then, inexplicably, her mood seemed to shift. She was tense. Fur bristling. Eyes scanning the area intently. Moments ago she'd been almost asleep. Notaku had started to ponder if she came out here to take a nap in a tree and why one would do that.
Oh, right. He'd considered sight and sound...but not smell. His scent.
He should move downwind.
That way he could smell her, but not she him.
This was a good plan.
Slowly, he extracted himself from the shrub and prepared to move, but halted when one of his horns hooked on a branch. He paused, eyes narrowing as he considered the situation. Then, with a swift twist and toss of his head, he was free. He'd caused the bush to rustle, but immediately after, he was gone and circling around the Wini in the tree, silent once more.

She was just about ready to move when she heard it; Lady's attention snapped in the direction of the sound, teeth bared in defense. When nothing came she slowly shifted her weight in prime position to leap at first sight. There was no way she was just hearing things. There was someone out there.
The thought alone drew a cold, anxious twist into her chest. For all of her bravado she was certainly not as fierce as she claimed to be, and the thought of an actual confrontation quickened her pulse in her throat as she scanned the dark brush around her once again.
"Nice try," she called, talons tightening into the branch supporting her weight, "But I know you're there."

Notaku paused as the female spoke. She knew he was here? What did that mean? What was she going to do about it? After a moment more of observation, his answer appeared to be 'nothing.' Interesting.
Perhaps he should get closer. What would she do then?
Circling to the opposite side of the tree from where Lady was perched, he started to climb under the cover of shadows., claws sinking into the bark with quiet scratching, crunching sounds.***** "Why did I get stuck with babysitting duty?" The grumbling Wini was talking to himself as he hesitated at the forest's edge. He had no issues with the forest itself, having spent much of his time there growing up. It was more the thought of having to track a certain pest through it when darkness was settling in. Ugh.
He closed his eyes and focused on the scent he'd tracked this far. Yep, there was nothing for it, he'd gone in there...for whatever reason. This time, however, Moki picked up a second, unfamiliar scent which gave him pause. It was still demon, but no one he knew.
...wonderful. The weirdo was probably harassing some poor Wini. It only took a moment's thought before Moki realized just how bad this could possibly be. "Well...crap." Nothing for it, he sighed and headed into the forest after the rogue weirdo. Hopefully he wasn't too late to intercede.

Adrenaline was coursing through Lady's system now, eyes focused intensely in the dark underbrush. Where? She could feel a prickle down the back of her neck- someone was still there- but she'd be damned if she could actually locate them in the dark.
The revelation came far too late when the soft, unmistakable sound of bark crunching up the length of the tree could be head.
Lady spun, hissing violently even though she still could not get a look at her pursuer. Her balance wavered only briefly, and for a moment she considered leaping straight from the lofty branch to the forest floor if it meant she could make a quick getaway.

Closer. closer. He could smell her now. Was that...fear?
How...interesting..."...NOTAKU!"The climber paused, grimacing at the sound of the far away voice growing closer. No! Fun-spoiler!Throwing off any hint of subtlety, Moki continued calling for his 'charge' as he progressed through the forest. The way he figured it, if Notaku was out here with another Winiko, he was likely causing mischief. And if Notaku was causing mischief, he was likely being a creeper again. Which meant...the best way to ruin his 'fun' and get him home would be to expose him and drag his sorry tail home if need be. Besides, Moki had grown up in this forest; there was little in here that he feared or worried about drawing its attention to himself.
"Notaku, you pest! Don't make me chase you through this forest all night!" The scents were getting closer. He was nearly on top of them. If the forest hadn't been so dense, Moki figured he'd have seen them by now. Pausing his shouts, he focused on his ears for a moment. A rustling overhead and a hiss caused him to look up. A female Winiko. Stranger, but she seemed more than alarmed. He had little doubt this was somehow Notaku's fault. He could smell the little bugger around here somewhere.
Moki pointedly stepped into view, adopting what he hoped was a disarming stance. "Miss? Are you alright?" he called up into the trees, hoping he didn't alarm her further. An irate growl emerged from the shadows beneath Lady's perch.
