It was a slow day, which worked in the nervous teen's favor. He recently turned eighteen and was actually disappointed with absolutely nothing changed about him. He'd gotten taller, sure, but he was still skinny and still had round cheeks for whatever reason. One wouldn't know how thin he was in a normal situation. But today, it was like the AC in the building couldn't keep up with the heat and he was down to a 'muscle' shirt and a pair of board shorts with his normal strap sandals on his feet.

Summer was too dang hot for the puffy-headed teen. His loose hair was stuck to his forehead and neck via sweat that wasn't dripping, but definitely in beads on his skin.

Every now and then green eyes flicked up to look out the windows and then around the flower shop, waiting on anything to happen. Sometimes this area of Ashdown was so quiet.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Ashton was, inadvertantly, in much of a similar predicament -- today wasn't a day he'd been set to go into work, but everything else he'd wanted to do was either unavailable or already finished from a fit of workaholicness.

Sigh. It really was tough (not really) to be so wonderful at everything.

But it'd been years since he'd been to the flower shop - not since he'd been very small (and very cis!), at least - and, with school coming back into session, there was really nothing better to do except to order Alois Scholz a supremely passive-aggressive bouquet of flowers. Research had been done, as little clothing as possible for the summer heat prepared (prepared being the operative word - it was a specific look, accentuating his legs and his slender waist, it wasn't just thrown on) - the end result being that Ashton looked lovely, even through the horrid heat, and he opened the door as smoothly as possible.

"I'm sorry to bother you, but do you have -" a brief second, where he pulled his phone out to read the list - "geraniums, hydrangeas, and narcissus? Pink larkspur and blue hyacinth, perhaps, if possible. I decided to surprise an acquaintance with flowers - if it's too much, really, I apologize."

Peppermint Coffee
geraniums (Stupidity; Folly), hydrangeas (Thank You for Understanding; Frigidity; Heartlessness), narcissus (Egotism; Formality; Stay as Sweet as You Are), pink larkspur (fickleness), blue hyacinth (constancy). ASHTON PUT WORK INTO THIS PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE FLOWER COLLECTION

And Leslie didn't completely panic when he saw the other with really weird features. It did give him a start, caused him to squeak and he nearly fell off of his stool, but he didn't ... Okay, he did freak out, but he straightened himself up when the other started to talk to him.

"U-uhm..." he managed to croak out. He cleared his throat and then let his brows knit a little bit more before opening his mouth and shutting it. "Let.. Hang on." He held up a finger and started jotting down what he remembered of the questions and his pink tongue poked out as he scribbled things down rather fast.

"So.. You said, Geraniums, hygrangeas, uhm... I think you said narcissus? I didn't catch the last two but..." He put the pen in his mouth and chewed on it as his fingers started to fly across the keyboard to pull up the inventory. "... I think we have these three in stock. Yes, we do." He gave the other man a helpless sort of look and shrugged a bit. "What were the last two? I'm so, so sorry.. for.. uhm.. For being a total spaz case?"

Ashton laughed a little helplessly, giving Leslie a bewildered smile. "If it's any trouble, I can really just go with those three! I don't want to be responsible for you killing yourself out of shock - I'm not really trained for that situation." Never the less, he moved closer, putting an arm on the counter.

"And narcissus, yes. The last two were pink larkspur and blue hyacinth - but if you don't have those, it's no problem, I promise. They're really just to make the collection even more rude, I'll be perfectly fine without them." The smile was indulgent, now. "And you're not a total spaz case, don't worry -- a few months ago I probably would have done the same if I'd seen myself. I'd explain it's not a subculture, but...I don't think you'd believe me."

Leslie scratched his forehead as he tried not to be overwhelmed by the suddenness of what seemed like a big order. He gave a helpless little smile and just shrugged and typed in the computer the last of the flowers he mentioned. "Uhm. We.. don't seem to have the last two, but we have the others."

He wanted to know, but at the same time, Leslie figured he was better off not knowing. Ignorance could be bliss. Now he just hoped he wouldn't be offensive. "So a full bouquet?" The smaller teen moved from the computer, to the shelves of flowers. "Did you want.. any padding? Baby's breath, anything like that?"

"Sorry, anyway? I.. I've seen this girl with deer spots, but.. I thought it was make up. Now I'm thinking it's not a fashion statement?"

Ashton really did look bad about the fact his order had been absurdly precise, so when Leslie said he couldn't obtain the last two, he just shrugged. "It's fine, I promise -- I don't want to seem unreasonable or anything, alright? And a full bouquet is alright." That cued another awkward smile, charming without seeming practiced.

"I've actually never really bought flowers for someone before, so...you work here, and I trust your judgement. If you feel padding would look good or be useful, then go for it. ...well, I can't speak about deer spots, but...again, it's one of those things that you'd think I was crazy for telling you about."

Leslie noticed the awkward smile, replying with one of his own as his hands started to arrange a bouquet for the other with all the flowers he had dug up. He cleared his throat a little and looked up as the other talked again.

"...probably not," he murmured. "..A lot of weird seems to happen in this city." He looked over at the flowers in his hand, rearranging some and adding more. He clipped leaves, and got rid of anything not pretty enough for selling. He should have gotten them earlier, but he was only human. Mistakes happened.

"Did you want a card?"

"Ah - no card, no." Ashton smiled and dipped his head, polite as always. "That'd make him think I'm in love with him or similar, probably, and that's -- well." He coughed politely, changing the subject. "No card is fine, is what I mean."

Leslie let out a little noise and a polite laugh before nodding. Finishing the bouquet he tallied up the total and then handed the bouquet to the man. "Uh. Okay.. Is that all you need?"

"That'd be all." Ashton's fingers lingered on Leslie's for a little longer than might have been proper while he took his bouquet, retreating without a handshake. "Have a nice day, then."

And he was gone, off to god knew where -- wherever beyond the door was, which was the rest of Ashdown.

Peppermint Coffee
