User Image With a whisper of wings, the white raven known as Solace came to perch in the darkened branches of an old oak. The woods surrounding her were shadowed and dense, old in the way that they had long ago gained their own presence. There was a feel to the old places such as this, a knowledge on the wind. Sometimes they were receptive to company, other times not. This place, these trees, didn't much care for her... For they had already granted shelter to someone else.

Still, Solace could feel the power of this place like a thrum in her bones. Rolling over it all was a faint sense of disapproval, of unwelcome, and she narrowed her red eyes in response, glaring wordlessly at the trees. Dusk was not far off and she would need to return before nightfall set in, but first there would be words.

Quote:
User ImageThese woods were a suitable home for Athanasios, quiet and dark, full of shadows and rarely accepting of visitors. As he wanted to keep his own council for the time, it made perfect sense for him to roost here. He was still fairly close to his strange new charges, and therefore able to look in on them whenever he chose. Of course, such things became an inconvenience when they themselves used it as an excuse to seek him out instead.

Sensing the female would not leave until she once again attempted to sway him to her cause, Athanasios emerged from his nest site in the heart of a nearby hollow tree. He launched himself into the air, tilting his wings to direct himself into a perch facing her.

Preening a feather into order, Athanaios narrowed his eyes at the long-feathered Solace and waited for her to make her case. Still, he couldn't help but say something. "I thought our last discussion wrapped things up. Why have you returned?"

Quote:
Solace fluffed her feathers, looking amused. "Does it really matter why I have come? You're cross enough that I am here, after all. I fail to see how telling you you were unsuccessful in convincing me that you were correct would improve matters."

She shifted slightly on the branch, considering the trees below. "Still, you are looking well. I do not see why you insist on maintaining your distance."

Privately, Solace felt the urge to roll all of her eyes at the high-headedness of males, particularly the one perching before her. Still, she was sure it would only serve to upset Athansios worse, and if she goaded him into too much of a temper he'd just refuse to help altogether. Which of course, would not do.

"Would it help or hinder my cause if I cautioned you not to get too full of yourself, as you are not the entire reason for my coming here this evening?" She challenged with a tilt of her head. "Knowing you, it could be either reaction or both..."

Quote:
Athanasios clicked his beak at her, annoyed both at her presence and her perception. They had both been summoned here, by some quirk of fate or chance. They were both to watch over a specific Soquili, and Solace had just happened to get here first. Not that it mattered, sooner or later there would of course be more of the family to keep an eye on. It didn't exactly help fill in the time now, though.

"I have other things to occupy my time, aside from sitting about and watching Teleri as you do." He argued with a fluff of his feathers and an unimpressed look. "With as many eyes as you have fixed on her, what is the benefit of two more? I prefer to be somewhere I can be of use, and at this moment these woods satisfy that."

He could tell she was annoyed with him, which annoyed and amused him all at once. Females were tricky, that much he knew, and her words certainly reinforced it. "I suppose my reaction is meaningless, as it will not change the why of your visit. So then, you are here to see things other than myself. Am I to expect them to arrive shortly, or are you here to explain before they do?"

A thought danced through his mind, and Athanasios narrowed his eyes. "You didn't 'arrange' the whole thing, did you? As I said, I am perfectly capable of filling in the hours. I don't need you managing things because you feel I need a project."

Quote:
"You too are looking well, Solace." He murmured after several moments of silence, sensing she was annoyed enough at his previous statements to sit in silence until he relented or apologized. "I am sorry of my previous statements made it seem you were unwanted... It is just, I am in the midst of a project of sorts myself, and things are, tenuous, at this time."

For all his brusque words, Athansios was glad to see Solace again. The she Raven was intriguing, with her burning red eyes and trailing snowy tailfeathers. She was also kind, worried about Teleri and protective in nature. They were close enough to friends, to Flock, for all that they spent little time together. United by a common goal -being there to watch for Teleri- also helped.

Maybe she could be of help, if she was so inclined... Well, assuming the project was amenable to the idea.

Quote:
Solace fluffed her feathers, clicking her beak fondly at Athansios when he relented. He could indeed be kind, when he wished... He just tended to get so absorbed in his worry for a project he became snappish or sulky.

"I am well aware of how you brood when something is bothering you. I think it would be better for us both if you would just admit the fact and let me help you. I can tell you're worried, about whatever it is."

She stretched, fanning her wings and transferring herself to his own branch. Giving him a fond nudge and running her beak over one of his feathers. "Come now, kindred spirit. Tell me what has you worried, since I have been watching the White Lady. Maybe speaking it out loud will help you resolve your troubles, and if not, I will offer what insight I can."

Quote:
Athanasios preened one of Solace's feathers in response, mulling over his words. "I have met some new inhabitants in this land, and I think one of them would be of interest to both Teleri and yourself..."

Quote:
Falmari Aqualonde paced through the shadowed woods, his eyes cautiously narrowed against the late afternoon sun. The burning orb was slowly sinking toward the horizon, mostly blocked by wide trunks and blanketing branches. Where sunlight dripped through was heavy and golden, edging toward red as time moved on, honeyed-slow. It wasn't dark to the point of comfort for him yet, but was getting closer all the time. Besides, under the cover of the trees and with his companion's careful guidance, he had little trouble picking his way along.

"Are we nearly there?" He murmured, raising his voice just enough to catch his companion's attention. Overhead he heard the rustle of leaves and wings, indicating the she hawk had returned to perch overhead rather than scouting the trail ahead. "To meet this mysterious friend of yours? Whom you see fit to tell me very little about?"

Quote:
User Image Pulled back from her scouting by the young stallion's question, Amarie turned and soared back to the old oak branch that craned over his head. It wasn't much of a distance, a quick glide from an advanced post back two trees distance to a previous perch. This section boasted a particularly dense patch of shadow, more hospitable to Falmari than the pockets of light that stretched ahead.

Digging her talons into the bark, she craned her head over the edge of the branch to fix her black eyes on him, noting how his eyes were still carefully slitted against the light. Even though they weren't wide open, she could see the ink-black color shifting just enough to determine he was focusing on her. Clicking her beak fondly, she shifted and fluffed her wings.

"We are, and sunset doesn't last so long in places such as this." She reassured him gently. "Dusk will be upon us in a moment, and you will not have to deal with the harsh light troubling you. Still, he isn't in this place for long, and this was the only way I could think to ensure you two would meet."

Quote:
"I certainly don't blame you for the sun, Amarie. That wouldn't be reasonable or fair of me to do." Falmari grinned, flicking his curled tail from side to side. "And we're friends, even when you keep your secrets, so I try to be both as often as possible."

The heavy white locks whispered with the movement, tumbling silken over his powerful hind quarters and then brushing the ground around his bright hooves. The sound seemed loud in the quiet wood, daytime creatures having retreated to nest and roost, and the nighttime creatures not yet emerged from their burrows and nests. It almost felt like they were alone on this shadowed path, heading toward whomever Amarie had been visiting with for the past few weeks.

"Don't think I didn't notice how neatly you dodged the commentary on your mysterious friend." He continued, flaring and folding his two pairs of wings. "So then, since we appear to be halted for a moment, why don't you elaborate? I am sure he is somewhat like you, but how did you meet? And what do you hope for me to find out when we visit with him?"

Quote:
"Is that so?" Tilting her white head and focusing several of her bright ruby eyes on the male raven, Solace quietly waited for him to elaborate. When he didn't seem inclined to continue, she craned her head over to rub her beak against his, clicking softly. "An inhabitant of this land that you think would be of interest, you say? Well, I am not surprised that you went out and found something of interest. I would be more surprised if you hadn't been up to something while you've been here."

Shifting faintly on the branch, Solace trilled softly to herself. "So then, are you going to introduce them to me? Should I go get Teleri, or do you think it best if I meet them first?"

Quote:
Avoiding the questions for the moment, Athansios focused on preening Solace's soft white feathers back into perfect order. In the soft dark of the woods she fairly glowed, her feathers brighter even than his own. Between the soft white of her feathers and the bright gleam of her eyes, he couldn't help but be fond of her... Though for the moment it didn't quite seem to matter. Solace was focused on keeping an eye on Teleri, which left Athanasios to look for more far-ranging projects.

Amusingly enough, this first project wound up leading him right back to their mutual charge, though the white mare and her other guardian had no notion of that now. Well, he was about to correct that, in short order if Amarie's timetable was to be believed.

"Introducing him to you was planned to occur in short order. I am not sure it is best to throw him in the way of the Lady, at the moment. Perhaps it is best if you speak to him first, and then we can go from there?"

Quote:
Solace clicked her beak thoughtfully, eyes crinkling as she smiled. "So, I take it he's already on the way? You seem to have planned this out, I just want to make sure I've caught up. You and I and this friend of yours, and then later we'll make introductions as needed to our charge?"

The white female hesitated a moment, then cawed a soft laugh. "Or should I say, my charge? Have you taken an interest in guarding him?"

Quote:
"He has his own Guardian, who will also be in attendance." Athansios countered, amusement in his tone. "I have a feeling that you two will get along rather well, unless I miss my guess. Regardless, she doesn't need my help. And you and I are both pledged to Teleri's service, until such a time as she does not need us. All things considered, she will probably need us."

At a sudden crack of a branch, Athansios's head tilted and he fluffed his feathers in anticipation. "It is of no matter, it sounds as though they are here."

Quote:
"There's no point in talking about something you are about to experience for yourself. I would hate to say something that colored your opinion or expectation of the meeting." Amarie countered, shifting her wings in a shrug. "Instead, I think we should continue to our destination and soon enough you'll be able to make a decision yourself. Allowing you to come to your own conclusions about our contact it a better option, I think."

Stretching her wings and launching herself from her perch, Amarie allowed herself to glide ahead by three or so trees, looking around before craning her head back to watch him approach. "Come along, as I said, he is not expected to be here long."

Quote:
"Alright, my friend... As you like." He murmured and paced along in silence.

As they continued through the forest, Falmari realized that Amarie's circles became smaller and smaller, until she was hardly moving ahead of him. Instead she seemed to linger on the branches above, watching him carefully before leaping to the next tree in a soaring glide. Once again she moved ahead by one tree, then turned to consider him over her shoulder.

Casting an amused glance up at the hawk, Falmari drew to a halt and tilted his head up to get a better look at her. "You know, you could at least make an attempt to be subtle... Or just come right out and say what you're up to? Because I know you, Amarie, and I can tell that something is going on."

He flicked his tail, shifting on his hooves. "Do you want to go on ahead and speak with your secret friend? I will promise to stand right here and wait patiently until you call me."

The stallion made a show of freezing in place, giving her his best innocent look. "Right here, if you like? I promise I won't move a muscle until you get back, if it eases your concerns."

Quote:
Amarie made a clicking sound that trailed off into laughter, shaking her head and flaring her crest at him. "You, sir, are a terrible upstart. I am not sure why we are friends at all, sometimes. No, I think it best we meet him together, so come along."

Quote:
“Well, I can say that I’ve been called worse, and by you even.” The stallion teased gently. “As to why we are friends, that was your mistake. I certainly can’t let you go now, things are just getting interesting.”

Falmari gave a faint shrug, picking up one hoof to paw idly at the ground. Well, if Amarie didn’t want to make the initial approach by herself, he wasn’t sure how to shake the she-hawk out of her worry. And he could tell she was worried, even if she was trying to hide it. Not very effectively, mind, but nevertheless…

“It isn’t like you to be so nervous, Amarie.” He murmured, pawing idly at the rich earth that was otherwise tamped smooth by the passage of other hooves and feet. “Especially without good reason. That implies that there is indeed a good reason, and we should stand here and discuss it before we continue on. So then, why don’t we discuss it? If it isn’t worth being worried, then you’re terrible at keeping secrets, I feel compelled to tell you.”

He smiled to soften the remark, but otherwise remained patiently waiting.

Waiting to see if the distant sound of snapping twigs would soon resolve themselves to the shape of the strangers in question, Athanasios shifted on his branch and tightened his talons. The grove that he had picked was well-suited to the meeting, in his mind. Dense walls of greenery on most of the sides would keep out the setting sun, but a clear view of the sky overhead would let them watch the rise of the stars and moon.

The Lady might be annoyed to know that they were keeping this from her, but some things suffered when rushed. Sios didn't want that, not for this family, so he would proceed with caution now and ask for forgiveness from her later.

"I trust you will be polite, so as not to chase them off?" He teased instead.

Quote:
Solace shifted restlessly on her perch, titling her head to eye her companion in an assessing silence. While he was known to her, the white raven not quite able to read all of her companion's queues just yet. Though she could tell something was amiss, she still needed some time to work it out.

"I will do my best." She murmured dryly, clicking her beak idly, her tone dry. We do know how fearsome some find me.. Perhaps it is best they knew you first, so I have less of a chance of scaring them off?"

"So you decided to meet with him here, and that is all well and good." Solace murmured thoughtfully. "And you decided that I should meet him, which makes a certain kind of sense. But does his guardian know of this meeting you set? Or is she wandering into this blind because you boys planned things without consulting us?"

Quote:
Athanasios turned his head to glare at her, cawing with laughter when he noted her expression. "As if anything could be slipped by her, particularly anything I might plot? No, and no again. I am forever surrounded by ladies infinitely more clever than I, and it is a fate I will endure because it brings out the best in me, and the view is ever so fine..."

He shifted on the branch and winked at Solace, fluffing his wings in what amounted to a shrug. "No, Amarie and I planned this meeting and this discussion, to see if we could figure out the best way to get The Lady here to meet him, well them really, without upsetting the Flock. It was decided that the best way to do so would be to have him meet you first, and we would go from there. But come now, I think they are here, let us go down to greet them."

With a faint grin he spread his wings and soared downward, alighting on a perch formed from a fallen oak limb. The lesser branches twined wither-high above the forest floor, and would do well for the ravens when they met the stallion that approached. There was also a limb not far away that would play easy host to Amarie, should the occasionally standoffish she-hawk with to maintain her distance for the moment.

Quote:
Solace retained her high perch for the moment, watching Athansios's quiet descent to his new post. It was easy to see that the white raven was looking forward to his companion's arrival, which made the meeting all the more interesting. Athansios was terrible at making friends, Solace could attest to that, but it seemed like he had...

"Interesting."

Quote:
“If being your friend is a mistake, it is one I am happy to make, boyo.” Amarie muttered in a tone that was teasingly rough. “So you had watch yourself, because that’s one of my favorite friends you’re speaking ill of. And I happen to have exquisite taste, I’m offended you would suggest otherwise.”

At the mention of her nerves, Amarie shifted on her perch, shrugging idly. “I am not nervous, I just know that this is important and I want things to go well. Even if you don’t know where we are going or who we are meeting you can trust that, can’t you? Trust me when I say that it is important, and that I think it will be good for both of us… Besides, where is the harm in you making more friends? I think you can use all the allies you can get.”

Clicking her beak in a soft laugh, she fluttered down to a lower branch and fixed her gaze on the young stallion once again. “So then, shall we go? My friend is waiting, and it is bad manners to keep someone waiting.”

Quote:
“You say the sweetest things to me, even when you seem to be cross.” Falmari grinned, swishing his silken white tail. “I know by now that your threats are empty. The worst I might have to worry about would be a wing to the head, and even then you know there’d be no force to it. Still, I would never presume to question your taste or your choice in companion. So you are a paragon of calm, and there is no pressure at all for this meeting to go perfectly. Delightful.”

He gave a soft sigh, shifting idly on his hooves. “You know it is… Somewhat difficult to make a good impression, at times? On appearance alone people tend to presume I will behave like a Kalona, never mind the aversion to daylight and other issues…”

Falmari blinked solid, liquid-dark eyes at the she-hawk in a speaking glance. “Are you sure that your friends will want to meet me? I do not want you to go into this meeting with expectations that will not be reached. You know I hate to disappoint you.”

Quote:
“You are a brat and sometimes I do not like you at all.” Amarie muttered at him, clicking in mock annoyance. “A terrible, terrible brat. I shall think of a threat that is not empty, and get you… Or perhaps I’ll have my revenge with no warning at all, no threat to tip you off. Yes, that sounds best… You should just, watch your back whippersnapper.”

His lack of surety about making new acquaintances made her soften, mantling her wings in what she hoped was a reassuring gesture. “As the ones you’re going to be meeting are less than normal themselves, I do not see why they would take issue with your appearance. I can tell you, with a great amount of certainty, that the threat that you may act like a Kalona would not sway them in the slightest. I am not sure you could catch them if you wished to do so, and you certainly don’t, so where is the harm? Besides, your issue with daylight is part of the reason we are having this meeting at dusk, so again you cannot argue that they are not aware of the issue. As such, here we are, and I think that instead of hesitating in the tree line we might as well go forward and speak to them in person. Hmm?”

She scoffed quietly. “You don’t scare or disappoint me, boyo. Now come on, let’s go meet these new friends, and I’ll prove it to you.”

Quote:
“I am a delight, and you love me and you know it.” Falmari returned smartly, a fraction of humor in his tone. He managed a smirk for a moment, but it faded a heartbeat later. “Threaten me or no, I bet I will see through your deceptions regardless… I’ll catch on in time to avoid whatever cruelties you wish to visit upon me… And if I don’t I guess I’ll then have to have my revenge on you. This might go on for ages.”

Her matter-of-fact way of speaking about those they were here to meet made him relax somewhat, gaining confidence from her easy demeanor. “If you insist that they are expecting us and they will not be afraid, then I suppose I shall just have to trust you. As I have this far into our journey, it would be somewhat ridiculous to change my mind now. Very well then, let us go meet your friends, and see what there is to see.”

Extending his feathered wing to allow her to perch on it, Falmari waited for the she-hawk to gain her perch and stepped through the wall of greenery into the clearing. Awaiting on a felled oak limb, a white raven with peculiar markings perched, eyes fixed expectedly on their approach. ‘Well, that explains why Amarie thought you’d have a time catching them… They’re bound to be far faster on the wing.’

“Good evening, I hope you weren’t waiting too long.” He offered in a low murmur, bowing his head in a gentle nod. "My name is Falmari Aqualonde, I understand you wanted to meet me?"

Quote:
Amarie gave her charge an approving nod, then fixed her attention on the raven pair.
