It was in the mid nineties on the surface, a pounding heat that made the waves along the coast of the lake seem impossibly appealing. Out in the distance, a couple of Poseidon Chosen were laughing, swimming like dolphins, halfway to that island in the distance.

Asher, stripped down to his boxer-briefs, clothing heaped in a pile on the sand well out of the water's reach, hadn't even made it fully in yet. The gleaming surface had draw him in, he'd made it about to mid-thigh -- and then, yelping, had retreated back to the shore.

It was colder than he'd expected, obviously, and now he was caught up in the dance of trying to will himself past the sensitive bits and fully submerge.

Jan liked the heat, naturally a cold-blooded creature without much fat to heat up his bones he took to the warmth of a summer's day like a cat to warm clothes from the dryer. The only downside was the sunlight itself which had a tendency to burn him rather horribly when he wasn't careful. Taking no chances that day he was slathered in fancy sun cream, wearing a pair of reflective sunglasses, dressed in a loose fitting purple shirt with a pair of shorts and a sarong slung around his bony hips to top it off. He still wore every bit of his gold jewellery, from the clanging bangles and rolex to the tens of gold necklaces and made no effort to so much as trim the sleek blonde body hair on his arms and shins. He moved like he hadn't a care in the world, which for the most part right now, he hadn't.

He'd made his way down to the lake, not out of a desire to swim but out of a private desire to get a look at the very attractive population and their own personal interactions with the water. Jan didn't swim if he could avoid it, he'd had a few unique encounters with it in his younger and more tumultuous days and most of the time he got involved with bodies of water it ended in a near-death situation. It was best just to look at it but not touch. Unlike most things.

It just so happened that Asher was the one who caught his eye and he wandered amicably down to the water's edge, sandals crunching on the sand and gravel. He took the brief opportunity to indulge in the sight before speaking.

"Cold I take it?" he said playfully with the smile evident in his voice.

Asher stood in the shallows and half-turned to squint back at Jan, apparently unashamed by the thin band of fabric around his hips that passed for swimwear. They were seamless, comfortable -- that was the most important thing, certainly, didn't ride up or pinch anything important, and that was always Rule Number One for Asher.

It was kind of the opposite of covering oneself in dangly jewelry and loose-fitting sarong.

Still. He didn't just. Just quirked a brow at Jan. "I'm worried it's gonna freeze off something important. It's so hot, how can the water be so cold?"

"Conduction I think." Jan said. "Most people I know just swear by diving straight under like pulling off a band-aid." The thought of doing so chilled him, slightly hung up on the idea of diving under a cold lake and being unable to surface again.

"It certainly looks refreshing." And likely was very refreshing in contrast to the heat, it was just a shame it was terrifying untamed open water and not a friendly swimming pool of jacuzzi. Pools he could handle and was in fact a rather capable swimmer, outdoors was a whole other ball game.

All in all he wasn't complaining about the other man's reticence once bit.

Asher's expression was skeptical as he looked back to the water, like maybe he thought it was a trap: that pulling off a band-aid dive some kind of trick to mess with him. He wasn't naive enough to give it a whirl just because someone told him to --

Or maybe he was. One more pause and then he did it, flopping in and under like a fish, and coming up a little bit breathless. Low seventies wasn't exactly cold, but when you dove into it, wrapped it around you like a blanket, swallowed it, it became a bit overwhelming.

He spluttered and cursed and shook hair out of his face, still up to his waist at least now.

Jan watched the other man dive into the water and for just a split second found his own breathing hitching as if it was himself who had just gone under. He could imagine how cold it would feel, the way it took your breath and thoughts away and tripped your brain into something clumsy and primal.

He was almost glad to see the man resurface and finally let himself breathe again.

"See, now nothing can be quite as bad as that."

"Like being punched in the face," Asher agreed, shuddering a little. For a moment, he stood half-in and half-out of the water, like he was trying to decide if he should retreat to shore. Then he dropped back down to about chin deep and hummed, getting used to it slowly. It was certainly better than the heat that had been pounding down on him all day.

"...maybe not quite so bad as being punched in the face. Are you getting in...?"

Jan weighed up his options rapidly. On one hand he could stay where he was and mark himself as a bit of a creep. Not to say he wasn't, but he didn't want everyone knowing it and avoiding him, or he could get into the water and potentially give away how terrified he was of it.

He could stay in the shallows he reasoned, shallows were all right providing nothing touched him.

"I can only think of one thing worse than being punched in the face." he said. "And that's being punched somewhere else."

But already he was taking off his light clothes and very neatly folding them as he did so until he was down to his boxers, which in a deviation from his generally eccentric attire looked to be made of pure silk and were probably worth about a hundred dollars at least. His body was just as thin as one would expect from looking at him, ribs faintly visible and with very lean muscle equally faint as he moved. It was a bit like looking at a blonde greyhound.

"But sure, if you say its not too bad." His first few steps in said that it was just as bad as he could have imagined and he hoped he didn't get hypothermia. He swore in swedish as he made himself wade out a little deeper, keeping his attention on Asher and not the enormous wide lake behind them, his heart pounding in his chest.

"It's still bad, just not that bad." But Asher watched him, somewhat amused, as Jan cursed and floundered his way deeper in the water, hugging his knees under the water and slowly relaxing into it. It was cold -- he wasn't going to stay in there for long, not like the Poseidon Chosen swimming like fish. Five minutes, maybe, and then he was going to have to run out onto shore.

"s**t. I wish I'd brought a towel." It was musing, half-sigh. Asher went under again, briefly, so that he could swipe hair out of his face as he emerged again.

Jan just treated it like a roller coaster, just make yourself do it, let the adrenaline happen, a disconnected bodily response. Not irrational, rational but not useful, not right now. He wasn't going to drown in some shallow water. He had to be friendly.

"Well nor did I." he said grimly. "Not that it's all that big a deal I think, the sun will dry us out in no time at all." Along with his skin and hair which would need to be carefully seen to later, nursed back to health after such wanton neglect.

Once he was in the water it wasn't quite as bad and he swam a few strokes, a surprisingly strong and capable swimmer for someone who was on the verge of running to the shore as fast as he could just at the feeling of his feet leaving the bottom.

"You don't think.. there's anything dangerous in the lake do you?" he asked carefully.

The question made Asher blink just a little: for his part not much of a swimmer, he seemed more content to sit in the shallows and cool off. His eyes flicked out over the lake, looking for some telltale sign of trouble: bubbles coming up from below, flicks of water from fins, perhaps the diving shape of a giant dragon. The usual.

Nothing. There were waves, but it looked calm enough to him. He licked his lips.

"I mean. She said on the tour that we could go in the lake. And this beach is super nice, it's not like we're jumping in off some rocks or something, right?"

Somehow, it just turned the question back to Jan.

The uncertainty in Asher's response made Jan's blood run cold, colder than it was even due to the water. "True. I'm just. Always concerned." And concerned didn't cover it at all, he'd had to deal with so many ailments, so many animals, he could only think of leeches and bacteria, of swimming snakes and other unseen horrors below the surface.

"Especially when they mentioned monsters on the tour. But even besides that, I don't generally go swimming..or haven't gone swimming often in America..." The first time he'd properly gone swimming on American soil had been to escape pursuit and he'd almost drowned.

He shivered and stood up again, glad to have soft sediment underfoot and trying to. "What god recruited you then?" he said, sidling a little closer to the shore. He was hoping a change of direction to the discussion would take his mind off of it.

It was a good distraction for Asher, too, focusing back toward land instead of out on the lake in general.

"Hermes." It was unhesitating: unashamed, or unconcerned, maybe a bit of both. He shrugged, the water rippling around him with the gesture, and raised one hand to tap the side of his head. "With the helmet and the shoes and everything, it was kind of ridiculous."

His hand slipped back down into the water, and Asher swiped at his shoulders under the surface. "You?"

"Me too." he said. "No idea why though, I'm not exactly messenger material." He had not researched all that much of greek history and their pantheons, gathering only the most superficial preconceptions of what they were about. Hermes as he knew it was a title most dominantly seen in courier services or messenger programs, he wasn't entirely certain how that applied to him or why he'd been chosen above other people to be of some use. He mostly did a lot of running away rather than to any particular destination.

"I didn't get to see any of it, shoes, helmet or whatnot. Probably a good thing because I don't think I'd have gone along with it at all. Too much unbelievable and I end up simply not believing."

He smirked a little, shallow enough he regained a little of his confidence and found that satisfying water that was heated tolerably by the sun. "I will admit it is a relief to see that the Aphrodite dorms won't be hogging all the attractive people."

"There's some beef in Ares dorm." If Jan's intention had been to compliment, it seemed that it had gone over Asher's head -- or it had been swept away in the force of some distracting thought. He shrugged, rubbing at his arms, actually starting to get cold now, and shot a look to where he'd left his clothing. Putting it on wet was going to suck.

"Definitely worth checking out, if that's what you're interested in." He sighed, looking back to Jan -- head cocked just slightly. "But an attractive bunch all around though, I'd say. Aside from some resting b***h faces..."
