How long had the summer lasted? Once the rains set in it got colder. Pelting rains that seemed to saturate your very being. While others were miffed by such a soggy terrain one mare stood there silent as the moon soaking in the damp atmosphere. Her deep eyes studying the droplets that slid toward the ground in a harmonic musical. For a moment she was at peace not minding the mud soaking around her hooves. Then she dashed off in full stride toward the ocean where her father spoke eloquently about the sea. His "Mistress" as he called her she remembered quite vividly. Laughing joyfully she cantered up to the ocean shore tossing her head. The waves slapping against the sand after the fresh rain was simply music to her ears.

She'd remembered as a foal hearing the ocean for the first time. It was still musical hearing the shoreline be it the sea or the birds that mingled in droves in the soggy sand. Curiously she bent down using her muzzle to nudge a crab walking by her hoof. Interesting things the sea gave to the dry land she mused walking a little further back to the grass that met the sands now.

Breathing once again she inhaled in the salty air as she closed her eyes and walked further toward the longer grasses. Then she began to graze wondering if any other Soquili lived this far out from the inhabited areas.

Slowly lifting her head the mare felt a presence as it echoed across the sandy dunes. Swiveling her ears she listened as if "Mistress" was calling her back to the rocking waves then her feet followed. Light sparked in her very being sensing something extraordinary waiting somewhere. Moving slowly she headed down the shoreline nodding her head as the salty breeze sauntered past her face. Blinking she followed the echo of a heartbeat seemingly gaining sound and presence as she neared her final destination. Littering the soaked sand she noted odd things rather than the usual morning finds. Debri of things unknown kept rolling inward as the mare moved slowly toward the heartbeat that was calling to her. Stranger yet she swore there were two in rhythm echoing back to her as a sonar travels within the depths and waves.

The further she walked the more scattered things appeared broken, discarded, and sometimes unreadable. Nodding her head she continued walking till a voice echoed in her ears, "Child of water you are needed now. Follow the echo as it calls to you".

The mare's breath grew shallow hearing the voice then her heartbeat increased as she dashed in a gallop down the shore leaving imprints and scattered sand. Immediately, she stopped at a dead halt as her eyes lied upon something or rather somethings tipped over in the sand. Upon further inspection Kasumi realized these tiny creations were baskets like she was born from. Moving in slower swishing her tail she walked directly up to the tipped basket setting it upright with her muzzle and teeth. The second basket was buried under some rubble still washing in with the waves. Instinct finally kicked in as she listened to the heartbeats in twos stating they were both alive.

"Kasumi" the water spoke to her deeply as the waves carried to and fro "They need you as you need them. They have lost their home and their families. I've done my best to bring them this far. Reach inward Child of water and follow your heart".

The mare looked at the Sea for a long time then back to the baskets. Nodding she found a wooden fixture large enough to transport. Then she lipped at each basket till she got a firm hold placing them on the fixture. Without further thought she began pulling the device with the baskets toward her home near the coast. She wondered endlessly what had happened and yet noting all the broken memories upon the shore she knew they were lost.

Placing each basket with care in the safety of her grotto the mare returned to the beachfront. So much debri washed in with the tides that it looked more of a disaster then a natural wonder as she moved slowly back down that forbidden path. Usually the sea washed things inward from other realms, times, memories in simple fragments leaving most to the imagination. Her sightings now brought immense pain gazing upon so much just lying stagnant on the beach. Occasionally, she dipped her head downward turning a strange object upon its back to further investigate its whereabouts. Once, Kasumi got to witness a ship wreckage leaving debri from its stay with no survivors but splintered wooden boards and strange trinkets of the two-legged kind.

Trailing behind her on this journey was the same creation she dragged the baskets to safety with back in the grotto. Placing them each back in a shadow from view she decidingly ventured out to witness the tragedy the twin baskets emerged from. Like most of her other surveillances she returned back to the grotto with items and shiny trinkets that caught her eyes. Gathering what she could carry on her wooden plank was placed neatly with easy transport. As she reached the end of the beach her ears swiveled forward as the ocean breeze swirled around her mane and tail. It was cool with warmth but the salty presence the the most apparent. Finding two shells worthy of saving she placed those on her board then drug it back to the grotto.

A strange sight indeed she had gathered so many things in her place of residence. For years she lived there alone wondering some days why her calling was simply transfixed on this central beach front. The grotto she wondered had belonged to two-leggers once set up strangely with shelves to place her treasures upon. Most this day were trinkets, items, and beautiful shells. Two in particular were conch shells that seemed to fit each basket she had retrieved strangely accurate to their keepers. In her mind she was alone yet she knew these living breathing creations would emerge calling her "mother". These orphans lost their world which she would become their everything as time wore on. Even if she never took a lifemate Kasumi would always have her adopted children. No matter what race, size, or gender in her heart they would be the water child's own flesh and blood.

Her calling was starting to define its presence and yet she knew it was merely not the ending but the start of a new beginning.

As the sun also rose followed by the moon the glistening sea was never forgotten. Waves full of effervescence always danced upon the shoreline returning back to the Sea herself. Tranquility always played her song murmuring sweet essence of life upon a solitary wave. By now most of the debri had been pulled from the shore leaving the area full of mystical beauty and wonder. Gradually over a week this familiar process dwindled down to shards washing back to the sea who had brought them there. Playfully the waves lapped upon the shore then returning to the waiting waves again. Not a single foreign object remained save for the indents of hoof prints leading down the shoreline.

Moving casually the mare walked along the shoreline keeping watch for debri or things not native to her home. It had seemed endless the trail of destruction that washed upon the beach littering it in odd shapes and sizes. Shaking her head she gathered shells in her teeth placing them within a net found along the odd creations she cleaned up. Then she would move onward grabbing kelp, shells, trinkets, and other things of interest. Once she had found a narwhal pup that had beached itself upon the shore. Carefully, she nudged the creature with her muzzle till it slid back in the water leaving a gracious thanks before it vanished. Some might call her living mundane but Kasumi born of the sea and her parents found much bliss in her daily duties. She mused knowing others were not as lucky to live and breathe the ocean listening to the harmony of the sea.

Today the mare walked with something lingering within leading her to check on her baskets occasionally. It had been nearly a week now with no sign of emergence from her little duo making her a little anxious. While she collected things her ears listened catching upon a sound. Possibly release of breath as it lingered upon the air followed by a second similar in pulse. Flicking her ears the water mare looked back toward the grotto her heart beginning to beat with an excited rhythm. Grasping the netting in her mouth she turned toward the east galloping as fast as she could. Pulling into a sharp halt she scented the air quizzically then entered the grotto straight toward the baskets. Deep within her hopes were raising through a shell of disappointment if her instincts weren't being true with her.

Reaching the baskets her eyes widened in surprise noting both had simultaneously been opened their precious cargo absent from the scene. Craning her head downward she sniffed the discarded weavings trying to scent her little ones. She also noted that there were tiny hoofprints tracked into the dirt leading toward the mouth of the grotto. Lifting her head upward she scanned the grotto for any sign of movement then panic set in. Bolting out of the grotto she skidded again to a halt wondering where they were in this vast area of sea and sand. She sniffed the air again the looked around the area as her nostrils tried picking up their scents upon the wind. Galloping downward to the shore letting sand caved inward around her hooves she stopped again ears swiveling non-stop. Skidding to another halt she walked slowly toward the shoreline then blinked. There moving down along the frothy sand was two tiny trails off hoofprints in unison. Scenting the air again she gathered their scent finally then went down the shore looking for the tiny legs that made such tiny indentations within the sand. The further she stepped the more the prints vanished as she came to the other side of the steeping shore that was matched by the rolling tranquil waves.

Closing her eyes she breathed trying to calm her fear, "I'm here little ones. Oh Mistress please let them know I'm here".

Playfully the waves washed around her hooves then drew back outward again to return to the Sea. A solitary call of a seagull called outward breaking the harmonious trance of the water's serenity. Breathing in such a contented feeling would have been relaxation in itself. The mare though trying to stay calm felt a longing for the missing foals that had escaped their foreign confines. Inherently she had no idea what to expect though deep within her intellect knew the truth. Movement softly whispered to her ears causing the blue mare to turn slowly reaching outward with her positive nature.

Standing below her were tiny creatures she had never laid a gaze upon till now. Bringing forth the scents of the vast sea along with a tropical paradise made her realize why her new charges were precious. Craning her head downward she spoke, "Hello little ones". Blowing outward in a breath of greeting she didn't want to spook nor frighten the tiny charges.

The second foal was the first to investigate reaching his muzzle outward to scent the mare, "Are you our mother?" he asked in a child-like demeanor his eyes wide and curious. His sibling the darker colored one blinked up at her his unique tail carrying behind him that they both were born with.

Kasumi breathed in a quick breath gaining a nurturing temperament as she fell in love with these boys. Flicking her ears she nodded to the second foal's question, "I am now" she cooed to the both of them. For so long Kasumi had lived here along the shore peacefully listening to "Mistress" and "Mother Ocean" sing their lullaby to all who listened. She spoke soft her instinct letting her bond with the two boys instantly.

Many days before this moment she had rummaged through the debri uncovering things including those two shells. Upon those shells were painted names respectively relating to each basket carrying an image of the same conch shells. Respectively she placed each shell with the foals' baskets that were represented by them. Now she inherently knew her task at hand to name the two boys as their mother or family had intended. "Now we need some names" she spoke to them softly remembering which shell went to each foal. These two brothers were twins which was a bit hard to comprehend but their personalities made things much more easier to deliberate.

"I will say boys I am not your birth mother but I have been chosen to fill that void for the both of you" she murmured looking toward the braver of the two, "Two shells were found washed upon the beach as you were. Each carried a name painted with the same colors of your baskets. Upon closer notice I realized whomever took care of you had names in mind".

The darker foal now spoke a little more braver yet very calm, "Of course you are our mother. The sea told us". He looked up at her with a smile or so others would have thought.

The lighter brother nodded stepping beside his brother in equal height, "The sea did. We were told to find you when we woke up". Darker like the evening reefs the lighter one he pranced about then spoke again, "When we sleep Mother Ocean sings to us. She says you will find us near the breath of the sea. So we came here knowing you'd come as well."

Kasumi smiled at the little duo feeling their clear blue-green eyes shimmer back at her, "Alright then it must be true. Your names are Bahamas" she motioned to the darker sibling, "And your name is Caribbean". Smiling at the both of them she waited to hear their responses.

Bahamas spoke this time first trying out his name, "Ba...ha...mas" tilting his head he looked at his brother and nodded with positive happiness.

Caribbean followed in suite repeating his name, "Car...ri..be...in" he grinned his little short fish-like tail waving behind him. Then he laughed and ran to the ocean's surf as it flowed inward and outward. He rather liked playing with the waves that seemed endless in their games to him.

Bahamas watched his brother being a little more laid back but soon followed Caribbean to the water's edge. Kicking up his heels he chased Caribbean around on the shoreline leaving Kasumi to watch in admiration of the two survivors.

Knowing each was safe Kasumi breathed easier stepping forward to walk toward the twins playing in the water soaked sand. They were indeed tiny in comparison to others of her kind. Perhaps she thought these little fish creatures were somehow related to Peaches the usdia back home. Her children were placed in tiny baskets such as the twins being born in stature growing into to hearty little ponies. Being nearly an hour short of reacting to their new world the water mare knew they'd settle down a little once they tired out. She simply stood there within the sand letting the visions of the twins playing relax her thoughts till they were ready for a nap.

Stretching from one day to a week the beachfront was alive with excitement and and cuteness. Two foals barely a day old now ran rampant forcing their new mother to chase them in curious games of tag, explore, and anything else their little hooves could get them into. Lecturing was a daily routine followed by sad faces and drooping ears as they skittered back to the grotto they called home. Today they set out to explore the area keeping a good nature about their motivation. It was a definite promise they wouldn't get into trouble this time around.

"Hurry up Baha.... the ball in the sky will be sleeping by the time you get over here!"

The second foal moved slower finally catching up to his brother, "You going to get us yelled at" he sulked looking at the lighter twin.

Caribbean chuckled sticking out his tongue, "Who says? Mama said we could explore if we're being good'.

Bahamas stomped his little hoof, "Cari I know you better. Mama Kasumi will be cross and not let us play on our own anymore".

Caribbean stuck his tongue out again, "Baha come on! Can't we just explore and have fun? I promise not to get us in trouble" he motioned a small smile, "You can trust me".

Bahamas shook his head, " You said that last time. Okay I'll trust you this time around". Moving a little faster he managed to get side by side to his brother their little eel tails swaying in the breeze. "Okay where to?"

Caribbean grinned, "Little closer to the opposite side of the ocean. Where the deep water is".

Bahamas frowned, "Cari you remember what Mama said about that. It's scary and dangerous".

Caribbean laughed, "Everything is dangerous to you. Besides I'm not jumping in that water just exploring around it. No harm in that right?"

His brother sighed, "Okay fine. But nothing funny kay?" Looking at Cari sternly he spoke again, "Lead the way wise one".

Caribbean bolted as fast as his little hooves could carry him till his long eel tail tripped him up causing him to roll down toward the beach in a thump. Looking around him he noticed Bahamas moving at a slow pace. Pulling himself upwards he shook the sand off of his body then as his little hooves sunk into the sand where he now stood. "Geez.. Baha you are so slow like a turtle" Snorting he pawed the ground then raced toward his brother in an attempt to get him to move a bit faster.

Bahamas moved in his own pace walking toward the beach. He stopped short though when his brother took a tumble rolling toward the beach like a big ball. He couldn't help but laugh as Caribbean covered in sand looked rather amusing. Laughing in spite of himself he shook his head at his brother, "Cari you are so silly". Blinking he noticed Caribbean starting to run up at him probably to get his speed just a little faster. Wiggling his tail he called out, "Hey Cari have a nice trip?" with laughter he started trotting away down toward the heavier beachfront slowing down as he hit the sand that sunk around his legs. "Okay not having a fall like Cari. Nice and easy" he reminded himself as he moved toward the deeper beach with the darker water.

Caribbean cried out, "Baha! No fair! Wait for meeee"! Trotting he followed after his brother that was already down to the edge. Bahamas always had some advantage when his brother was being a bit aggressive in play. Once his tiny hooves hit the sand though he moved a bit more slower but fast enough to catch up to his slower brother.

Bahamas was the first to arrive not once letting his tail get caught beneath him causing a rolling ball intertwined with himself. He just gradually moved forward swaying his little tail keeping in check balance and stability. His brother being the little powerhouse tended to trip himself up not caring if consequences were dangerous or not. Baha chuckled to himself at his brother's antics wondering how he'd look as an adult rolling up in a ball as he careened toward the ocean like an out of control gull. Moving down the shoreline he noted it was actually North since the beach ran up and down instead of side to side. Sure down further the beach curved into an inlet making it South eastern but who was counting or configuring which direction the ocean moved along. He chuckled to himself having this debate while his brother thumped about in the sand behind him.

Walking slowly Baha stepped into the fresh surf after the tide had rolled back out. His brother and him never skipped a beat after the tides completed the ebb and flow letting the rising sun warm their little muzzles. Each day they ventured out exploring as learning in life took over their lives. Cari may be the one to venture out in the ocean but Baha generally just admired the rolling waves stepping only out till the salty water splashed against his knees. Sometimes he'd dip his head in the salty concoction to gather moisture in his unusual coat the siblings were born with. It wasn't exactly fur but more so a leathery skin combined with soft fur unlike their mother Kasumi that was all fur from head to well her hooves. If there was anything Baha loved anymore in the world it was sticking close to their mother. She gave him closure when bad dreams erupted and soothing vibes when his tiny head dipped downward in exhaustion. It was something Baha looked forward to each night as he fell asleep next to Kasumi dreaming off into the night protected and loved.

Caribbean watched as his brother calmly made way to the ocean standing there in a sense of serenity. Whenever either of them ventured out Baha was usually the first to reach the water unhindered. He was also the first to master not getting rolled up in his tail when excitement kicked in sending him head over heels. Most attempts Cari was reckless leaving speed to propel him down to the water. The only fall back was his folly involving his tail he tripped over every morning. Snorting he finally joined his sibling who was casually walking down the beach. Tilting his head he wondered just what thoughts danced in his brother's head half the time. Trotting up to Baha he laughed, "I let you beat me you know. I do it on purpose so it makes you feel better".

Baha looked over at his brother, "Cari if you'd just take your time you wouldn't kiss the sand. I learned moving my tail as I walk keeps me from falling like you do. The ocean isn't going anywhere so you can come down with no spills".

Cari frowned, "Why do you have to study things to make them better. Ugh fine" he groaned looking back at his tail. Scrunching his muzzle in contemplation he moved slowly trying to move his tail with his body movements. It was still short and bothersome but he did walk a few steps before he lost his patience and slipped.

Baha frowned dropping his ears lower, "You'll get it Cari. You just have to practice and get it right that's all. Look we're down at the deep water. What's your plan for the day?"

Cari was grumping a bit before he perked at the water, "Now let's see if there's any pretty shells Mama might like".

Baha smiled at his brother, "Sure. Here I thought you were going to jump in again but, I'll help you". Walking next to his brother his ears perked. Cari did have his moments but he was his brother afterall. Sometimes you had to take the good with the bad in a sea of countless possibilities.

Cari moved more carefully now mimicking his brother as they headed downward to the shore meeting the deeper water. Stones had been placed by that certain area making the bold carefree colt wonder if Kasumi had placed it there to keep him out of mischief. "Really?" he grumbled aloud, "She doesn't trust us?!"

Baha moved in a small trot swinging his tail for balance looking curiously at those rocks, "Guess not. Oh well we can search for shells and trinkets like we said we were going to do". He laughed at his brother knowing he was hurt and dejected yet Cari knew how traumatized their mother had been pulling them both out of the ocean's deep point. Baha tried staying neutral but he also got that discerning look from Kasumi for not stopping his brother before they both fell in almost drowning.

"I see you boys have found what I was doing for the past two days" came a voice behind them soft but concerned as Cari's voice had been almost shrill.

Cari nearly stumbled over his tail blinking at the voice trying to look innocent yet guilty as ever, "Mama!" he choked looking at Baha with wide eyes "How long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough little one. I always wondered on the phrase Never turn your back on the ocean" she smiled with a laugh "It couldn't of been more right". The mare couldn't help but laugh at her spunky colt whose carefree life reflected in those deep endless blue orbs. Bahamas on the other hand reflected the subtle green teal tranquil version leaving them both unique but the same when they were together. "So my boys other than getting in trouble what were you planning today?" Her voice wasn't a scolding tone but she did laugh only slightly letting them wonder.

Bahamas walked up beside her, "Well we know you like collecting pretty things so that's what we were questing today. Pretty things for Mama Kasumi". His voice was so mellow as he turned his head toward Caribbean with a wink, "Right Cari?"

The ambitious sibling snorted his fun dissolved into an outing with mom being the chaperone, "Yeah that was the original plan". His voice seemed a little drawn out for his heart had been set upon diving deep in that water. Now his resort was sticking to the shoreline seeking out shells all day. Snorting again he tossed his spiky watery mane stamping a tiny hoof, "The shells aren't gonna wait all day. We need to get started already!" He then awkwardly started off trailing the beach digging here and there ignoring the other two.

"Bahamas" the mare spoke quietly, "Out of both of you you seem to have the clearest head of the two. I didn't place those rocks there to make Caribbean and you think I didn't trust you rather, to keep you both safe. I promised the ocean I'd watch over you both even if it's something your brother doesn't like" she spoke craning her head downward to nibble playfully at his stubby little mane.

The quieter colt giggled as she tickled her hair, "Two sides of the ocean Mama. That is who we are and always will be. I know you didn't mean to make Cari mad. He'll learn someday". Rubbing against her leg with his little head he noticed something colorful in the sand, "Mama look. What is it?'

Cari still grumbling perked his ears trotting back over, "Baha what did you find this time?" No longer sulking the perky foal began digging around the object till it came free. Tilting his head he looked high up at his mother, "What is it?" he asked in a softer curious voice.

Kasumi smiled at them both moving over to examine their find deep in the sand.Craning her head down she frowned. This object she had no clue what is was but somehow in the future its identity may be revealed. Picking it up gently in her teeth she placed it in a bag she had fashioned together when catching kelp along the shore. "It's something from the ocean" she spoke softly, "We'll take it back to grotto for safe keeping till we learn what it is together".

Yawning with a flick of his ears the spunky little nixie twin opened his eyes slowly to the flickering light outside the grotto. Usually the first one awake his expression appeared perplexed being alone in slumber. Pondering how long sleep had taken him he yawned pulling himself to his feet. Each day was infused with learning growing into stronger curiosity and most of all balance. Gazing about the grotto he noticed the bag Kasumi usually took shelling was missing from its home location. His brother Bahamas or Baha for short seemed to be missing as well as their mother. Glancing upward he noted the treasures they had all collected over the months zeroing in on the two shells that had their names etched in them. Wonderment filled him deeply of where they truly resided at before they washed upon the serene shores of this amazing world. Taking one step forward he remembered to position his tail before trotting out the door.

Beaming rays tickled his muzzle causing him to squint as the sun warmed his little form composed of the sea. The foals gradually growing into their true selves spent sometime in the ocean but never too far from Kasumi's reach. They even found joy swimming in the streams, lakes, and the lagoon hidden back from the outside world. Bahamas discovered it first wiggling into the small crevice only their size could go. The opening was further in but the water was enjoyable appearing crisp and clean. A fascinating mixture of salt and fresh water made hot summer days seem like a paradise to the twins.

Looking around he headed toward the shore listening carefully for voices. His little now growing mane bristled in the breeze tickling his neck and withers. Curiously his little gait carried him down to the beach where he noticed his brother and Kasumi gathering gifts from the sea.

Kasumi stood silently moving her head only to survey the waves as her slightly larger charge by her side dug in the sand. Being a ritual of sorts now each day they collected things washed upon the shore. The debri from the storm had gradually remained quiet washing up only here and there. Deep within her mind the mare sensed a tragedy had occurred leaving these orphans in her care. The ocean had not spoken to her for weeks now as her tiny charges grew up to her shoulders. They still were foals but their growths spoke adulthood around the corner. Many hours Kasumi had spent fishing out her boys from deep oceans, chasing them to who knows where, and ideally just spending time with them. She pondered this very day standing there if her future would grant her a mate and children of her own. Raising her boys brought her endless amusement but would she ever find "happiness" without them.

Turning her head toward the grassy knolls she saw Cari looking a bit exhausted as he made his way down to the beach. "Bahamas you brother finally has awoken" she spoke softly to get the twin's attention.

Bahamas had been digging since he loved helping his mother discover new treasures. A more serene personality then Cari Baha found much joy in relaxing or helping others. He mused his brother had slept in so late missing all the fun. Apparently it had rained the night before leaving a new arrival of things from a storm out in the ocean. New shells, trinkets, things they couldn't describe were placed carefully within the grotto built ages ago by the hands of two-leggers. Clay, shells, and other things made this dwelling quite roomy with a mother's touch of course. Kasumi had gathered fresh grass daily for them to sleep upon along with sweet treats that kept them healthy. it was simply paradise living here even if it wasn't by choice. Accepting the truth as they grew into their tails and adult selves they understood that their real home and family had come from the ocean and sea. Kasumi was made their protector as a voice spoke with them one night while their mother slept. It explained they had no reason to be wary because she was their protector now.

Retrieving gorgeous shells this morning gave him a little happiness if not a bit of pride. The way she looked at her calm little charge was rewarding enough with that sparkle glistening in her eyes. Looking down in the surf he noted a couple sand dollars picking them up as he carried them to the bag lying in the sand. Upon hearing Kasumi's voice his ears perked noticing his snoozing brother finally awake from his lucid dreams. Smiling lazily he spoke once Cari had joined them, "Have a good dream Cari? We tried to wake you but you were deep off in sleep".

Kasumi smiled at her boys noting each day how big they were getting, "Sleep well my little one?" she asked softly as she nuzzled Caribbean with affection.

The sleepy colt yawned again looking at his mother, brother, then the bag with all the treasures, "How long have you guys been out here?" his head tilted quizzically wondering just how long he slept.

Baha chuckled, "Most of the morning. It's almost lunchtime so we should head back soon".

Kasumi nodded, "Indeed. We'll partake lunch and plan things for tomorrow if you boys are up to it" she said with a nod, "Oh and I hear there's a festival soon up on the Northern Beach if you boys want to go. The natives welcome our kind with open arms. I think they can even make us necklaces if you'd like that".

"Festival?" Cari blinked, "Can we go?" his little tail swayed back and forth but not once did he topple over like previously.

Baha tilted his head, "Maybe they can use our shells we've been finding. I would love to wear a shell necklace".

Kasumi smiled, "Alright then I'll send word we'll be attending. Festivals on the beach are always fun to attend". Craning her head downward she retrieved the bag, "Alright boys let's go get lunch and plan our adventure tomorrow".

Time fleets by as waves continuously rolling waves lap upon the shore.

A yawn could be heard from a familiar individual as they rolled over shaking their head in a sleep induced state. Pulling himself upon his legs he felt stronger this day looking over at the silent place his sibling slept within. Yawning again he glanced toward the grotto's shelves noting all the treasures acquired since their arrival. Taking a step forward his tail swished back and forth careful not to bump anything breakable before exiting the door to the outside. Ears flicking forward he moved slowly onto the grassy knolls filled with shimmering white sands. He had slept in more than usual this time as the sun peeked behind the clouds that grew gray and ominous. Snorting he walked over the hillside noting his brother and mother doing the usual shelling they performed each early morning. As a light drizzle slid down upon his back he galloped down toward the ocean his tail no longer a hindrance in tripping him till he rolled. In fact it was a nice balance keeping him agile as his stocky little form moved steadily down to the stretching beach front.

"You guys let me sleep in again" he mumbled as he cantered to where they stood, "You know there's a storm coming right?"

His brother looked up at him after using his skillful hoof to unearth pretty coral nestled beneath the sand, "You always sleep in what's the concern Car?" Rolling his eyes he continued digging looking for things before the storm set it. Once it passed he'd venture out again. It seemed the festival they attended a month back was eld each weekend now till the season changed. The two-leggers there accepted the shells and treasures for barters of grasses, fruits, and other things Kasumi kept well stocked in her grotto. One two-legger in particular had crafted each of them a beautiful sea necklace the three wore daily. Two shark teeth were even made into accessories for each of the twin's legs.

Kasumi smiled looking downward at her twins grown fully into adults now. From those tiny little forms to stocky aquatic usdia types it seemed overnight. It had been a couple of months but Kasumi knew from watching the other foals in Celendria's herd how fast they grew into adulthood. She frowned slightly remarking time was fickle in life taking away long periods of joy in watching babies grow. Still, no matter how old or tall her boys grew they would always be her charges. Till her own dying days even in loneliness they would be her strength. "My Island floating upon the ocean" she say lovingly in her soft sweet voice when they were so little.

A few more drops pinged her upon her back giving a warning about a coastal storm. The winds were picking up stronger as she noted the manes of the boys were almost floating in the wind. Turning her head her gaze caught sight of the palm trees blowing angrily that a leaf ripped off tumbling away towards them. Breathing in the incoming ocean as Cari stepped out toward the waves she spoke, "Caribbean. Bahamas. We need to gear toward shelter because something nasty is coming this way. You're not going to like this but I need you boys to gather water. Bring it into the grotto and put the heavy wood up against the window and door. We're far enough from the ocean but these winds can travel further.

Caribbean stopped nipping at the water as it pushed him back his mother's voice both a warning and alarm. Storms were seldom here but when they reared their heads they were quite troublesome.

Bahamas moved quickly after he nodded in understanding with Mother. In fact he was the first to begin gathering the water to be stored in the tub Kasumi kept for emergencies. Gather shells, containers, what have you he began transporting water quickly to the large inset grotto.

Caribbean took on a wave that slapped him rather meanly causing him to bolt from the water. When a lightning bolt slammed down smacking a nearby tree the little Nixie broke into a full gallop. When he finally arrived Bahamas had filled the tub nearly to the top. Their mother was already inside prepping up the heavy planks in case the wind reached past the beach front.

Caribbean slid in the doorway as another lightning bolt struck followed by heavy winds. His chest moved inward and outward heavily feeling such a rush of exhilaration fill him. Storms were always interesting to watch but he never fathomed racing one just yet. They tended to be noisy vibrating the ground way too much. Grumbling he walked in a little circle then seated himself his full large tail curling about him. He hated being closed inward in a secluded place it made his boredom spike even further, "Mother how long are we stuck in here?" he asked with a frown.

"Till the storm has passed my lil Ocean" Kasumi responded softly looking out the window. So much for a relaxing day shelling and grazing by the beach.

Bahamas yawned curling in his own little circle listening to the rain, "Mother do you think others will wash up like we did? Like the storm that brought us here?" he looked at Caribbean who sulked determined to outrace the storm somehow. "The ocean told us we came from a place destroyed by the storm. But, when I asked again recently she wouldn't tell me".

Kasumi sighed at the rain her face lucrative yet concerned, "That I don't know Bahamas. Theses storms bring bad tidings yet somehow they always make sense afterwards". Her own concerns of other destroyed islands made her withers prickle. Storms such as these were a warning, a prelude of things happening outward far from anyone's grasp. She whispered to herself endlessly what creatures these boys would have called family were lost to the tides. Shaking her head she stepped away from the window lying herself down with her boys, "Let's play a game shall we?"

Caribbean tilted his head his mane still soaked from the rain, "We're not foals any..."

Bahamas cut him off short, "Sure mother Cari and I would love to". He looked at his brother whom was rolling his eyes with a snort. It was amusing but a more polite gesture in a time when things were not in their favor.

Kasumi merely laughed grabbing an apple with her muzzle nosing it over to the boys, "Yes Cari I know you're not a foal anymore. Nor is Baha but you have precious ideals and curiosity about both of you even as young stallions. Alright for the game I want you to each choose something on those shelves and tell me a story about what you think it might have come from. It doesn't have to be the truth but, I want you to have fun. Cari you can be as creative as you want"

Caribbean snorted looking up at the shelves noting he glanced upon this stuff all the time. Finally he settle upon something, "That one the odd shell with the gem wedged in it".

She nodded, "Baha it's your turn now. Choose wisely my son".

Bahamas chuckled looking at the shelf, "Alright let's see" he spoke as his eyes surveyed the countless items, "I choose that shiny accessory there with the large blue stones circling it".

Now she closed her eyes opening them to an simple yet curious clamshell necklace. "Alright, shall we begin?" she asked with a smile, "Baha why don't you go first"?

Bahamas nodded as he began, "I think that one belonged to a royal of sorts. Perhaps a mare walking by the shore tripped and lost it to the waves". It could of been true in a sense because those deep blue stones Kasumi called sapphires were mostly regarded by the royals. "I wonder just how many far away lands there really are that have royals living in it?".

Bahamas smiled, "As I was saying this royal mare liked blue stones their reflections like the ocean she loved spending time by. So one day she leaned inward to see her reflection noting how the blue stones sparkled like her eyes as her flowing mane tipped like the seafoam contrasted to her beautiful form. She was so pleased with her appearance she slipped off the rock she stood upon losing the bracelet to the waves that carried it off forever from her sight. To this day even in her passing she weeps for her bracelet haunting those that dare keep her from her treasured bracelet covered in the heart stones of the sea".

The water and sky mare mused at her darker son, "Very well done Bahamas. In retrospect I think your tale could have truth in those lands far beyond. Alright Caribbean let's hear your story and how it compares to your brother's tale".

Cari's eyes widened for his soft spoken brother created a ghost tale clear out of his imagination, "Alright then I shall astound you both with my story. Not a ghost oh no but something even better filled with intrigue and majesty" His voice was not squeaky as his foal form ut deeper and louder as he sun his own tale, "My tale lies lower in the depths were the mer people swim freely with the only care of the two-leggers from above. There once was a pretty female whose eyes were aqua like the highlights in the outer ocean. Her name was Oceanna whom loved swimming to the surface".

"Once very long ago she met a stallion swimming in the depths whom she fell in love with. They spent many days with each other till time realized they had to part when humans killed her stallion. Crying tears in the ocean she refused to live any longer without him in her life. So she swam far and wide till she found a magical altar of Mistress Ocean. Giving her tears in sacrifice she died though her soul refused to go on. So Lady Mistress bubbled her soul placing it within the pearl nestled in the stone. Then the shell cradling it was cast away so she couldn't see the world anymore living forever in her tears which colored the pearl within the shell its many colors. Some say the pearl still holds her soul trapped for endless days and nights till the world ceases to exist". Looking at his brother he smirked then to Kasumi, "Your turn Mother".

Momentarily, her eyes blinked noticing her boys had been growing mentally though they never expressed it. She was indeed proud of them both. Now how would she add icing to the cake with such amazing tales told before her. Whispers deep in her mind though steered her from her original tale. Instead she began thinking deeply of a tropical setting she began, "Once upon a time there was a handsome kelpi named Nassau who lived upon an island filled with tranquility and intrigue. He was considered a guard for this very island watching over a thriving herd of water dwellers such as himself. Some were small like you boys while others were large like myself. They lived in harmony each day upon that island seeking shelter only when the rains came. This particular stallion wore this very clamshell necklace watching over the shells of the future foals".

"One day an old herd member murmured about a storm headed toward the island. A vile storm filled with malicious intent whom would someday destroy that which it created. The others heeded not the old mare's words still relaxing and not listening to her warnings. When the storm did arrive the stallion frantically herded everyone to safety leaving the shells abandoned in their awakening to the future. The structures constructed could not hold the herd as the storm bellowed through souls were plunged into the ocean only to be struck by waves endlessly pushing them back".

Tears formed in Kasumi's eyes as she continued, "Nassau rushed out in the storm to find only two baskets had survived. Unfortunately, the parents of those baskets the waves took with them. As the rains bellowed onward crashing onto the island Nassau was left with only one whim within. He gathered netting bringing it to those last two baskets which he placed inside carefully. Within he placed various things before the next giant wave would tear the island apart. Trinkets, relics, anything he could find was placed in the netting. Finally two conch shells were scribed with names placed near their companion foal baskets.
Before the last wave hit he dived into the ocean devoid of ever knowing what happened to his island. Then he lept inward to the depths with that netting in his mouth as the final wave crashed the island sinking it to the bottom".

Now her cheeks streaked in pure sadness "He swam for days regardless of thirst or hunger escaping tragedy to bring new life to life in a new world. Finally, when he could no longer go on he recovered a hollowed log placing the baskets with some water within along with his clamshell necklace.. Then with the rest of his strength he collapsed on the shore as the netting in the hollowed log floated to the unknown".

Then the whispering ceased in her mind.

Kasumi blinked again noting her boys had fallen asleep. Her mind filled with so many queries as she shed a tear for the islanders. But mostly a name stuck out in her mind above all else, "Nassau".
