Isobel had been watching.

Well, no, mostly she'd been playing Pokémon Go, but she'd also taken the time to look up from her phone every so often and appreciate how many other people were walking around with their nose in their phone, playing the game.

People she could, feasibly, strike up a conversation with. Because they shared a hobby, right? Okay, so maybe she still didn't know a ton about pokémon and she was still horribly lowlevel in Go, but she was playing the game and having fun and that was what mattered. Right?

Right. So when she'd found the seel, she'd looked around to see if she could spot anyone else playing - so they could share the spoils and she could, maybe, try to strike up a conversation.

Thankfully there was a redheaded teenager nearby who fit all the signs of being in the middle of playing. Around her own age, which was a good thing - she didn't think she could approach an older guy. Taking a couple of deep breaths, Tibbie mustered all her courage and edged up to him - hoping that he would see her approach and somehow take the responsibility of saying something first out of her hands.

No such luck. She stopped about a meter away from him and wrung her hands, indecisive if she should actually go through with this. What if he thought she was a bother? What if he got mad?

No, she had to be brave! Another deep breath and then she moved slightly to reach forward and tap him lightly on the shoulder. "Excuse me... if you, um, want, there's a seel just over there." She pointed helpfully, putting on the best smile she could through the nerves, knowing that it looked horridly awkward.

To say Jamie loved Pokemon would be an understatement. Each and every main series game was under his belt now, some finished more times than he bothered to count. In his free time—which, before he met Shiloh and the others, had been almost limitless outside of school—he trained competitive teams and occasionally searched online for opponents to test his skills on. Pokemon forums were the only place, even safely behind a computer screen, that Jamie didn't feel quite as awkward holding a conversation.

It was no surprise that when Go came out, Jamie's loyalty to the series compelled him to download it. After the constant server issues in it's first few days, he'd started to lose hope, but as soon as it finally began to work with any consistency, he was hooked.

So here he was, idling on a street corner catching a rattata. From the corner of his eye he saw Isobel inching closer, but he assumed she was simply playing the game, too. It was a lie to deny he didn't feel some nervousness the longer she lingered, wondering if he was in her way or something equally silly, but he'd been trying to get better about overthinking things like this. It was nothing, nothing at all, it-

She touched his shoulder and spoke to him.

Jamie's eyes widened and he turned, not at all offended, but more startled by her acknowledgement than anything else. He recognized the look on her face, the awkward stiffness that came with social inexperience. Lips pursed into a thin line, then opened as he meant to speak, but that's when her words truly sunk in.

"A... A seel??" he asked, suddenly glowing with excited interest. He loved seels and the best thing he'd gotten all day was this high CP rattata. "R-Really? Could you... Could you show me?" For Jamie at least, the ice was broken.

Okay, that seemed to have worked a lot better than she'd anticipated it would. Not only was he talking to her, he actually seemed excited!

"Yes!" Some of the nervous butterflies in her stomach were easing up and her smile was becoming more natural by the minute. "Um, to all of those things. It's right there, over by the corner-" again she pointed, before realising she'd been asked to show it and holy carps this was her chance to have a longer conversation! "No, I'll show you! That's better. Definitely better."

Snailishly slowly, she started to walk to in the direction of the seel, checking to see if he was following her. "So..." Somehow, her head seemed suddenly vacant of all possible conversation topics. "Er... Åh!" A bright idea courtesy of her original plan; "Pokemon Go is really fun, right? I'm only level 6 but it's very, um, entrancing."

Never missing a beat, Jamie's eyes followed the line of her arm to a street corner a short distance away and they stayed glued that direction. It was obvious in his straighter posture that he was eager to get moving, but her exclamation was what finally tugged his attention away from the prize and back to the moment he still inhabited. Ready excitement relaxed into cautious, apologetic optimism.

"You... really wouldn't mind?" he asked, realizing how quick he'd been with his demands. "Sorry I, um, got kind of excited and... didn't think." It was embarrassing to admit that, but he tried to shrug it off as he followed her. Having his phone to play with between his hands helped.

And so did idle conversation.

"Yeah- Yeah, I... like it a lot, too. I like a lot of Pokemon games, but this one iiiis kinda different and I like, y'know, taking walks and stuff..."

"Of course not," she said, shaking her head as her smile took on a bit more warmth. "I- I mean, I wouldn't have told you about the seel if I didn't want you to know where it was, right?" And also possibly make friends, but saying that at this point would probably come off as a bit too forward and borderline desperate. Still, in the quiet of her mind, she plotted. Rather innocent plotting, but she was making an effort!

"It is?" Her voice was bright with curiousity; "I'm sorry, I only know this one - I've never, um, played any of the others. I've seen some of the other pokemons though! Poplio is so cute," she ended with a dreamy sigh. "But I don't know which game has him, just that's it not Go. What's your favourite pokemon like?"

All Isobel had to do was show any smidgen of interest in his hobbies and she had Jamie's attention hook, line, and sinker. It was selfish, but he rarely got to share things about himself. Those magical moments were ones he treasured. Of course he loved to hear what other people liked, too, but... Well, he tried not to overthink it. She'd continued touching on it, so she wouldn't mind talking about it, right?

"Poplio is really cute," he agreed, looking sheepish. "K-Kinda funny 'cause... well, y'know, you told me about that seel. They're both seals and stuff..." Ugh, he was about as good at being clever as fish would be flying through the sky. "A-Anyway, poplio is from the newest games, Sun and Moon. They aren't even out yet." There was impatient exasperation in his voice.

"My favorite, though... definitely goldeen. It's, um, a goldfish with a unicorn horn..." Wow, that sounded pretty ridiculous, didn't it?

"Yes!" She giggled lightly at his wit, genuine and happy that this conversation was going as well as it was. It was a minor miracle in her book. "I guess seals are the theme of the conversation!"

She nodded to the information; "that makes sense! I'll remember that for later - if they're anywhere as good as Go, m-maybe I should look into getting them." Turning inexplicably shy at admitting that, she fiddled with her skirt, stretching little bits of the fabric and then letting it go. "Do you know when they're coming out? And they're for the phone like Go, right?"

At his talk of his favourite pokemon Isobel brightened up again, "åh! That sounds so pretty! Is it like a koi or a normal goldfish? Does it have healing powers like unicorns? Åh sorry, I'm asking a lot of questions, aren't I?" And there was another one to add to the list. "Um.."

"Oh, um, the other games are kinda different..." as he spoke, he pulled his 3DS out of his pocket where it had been awkwardly shoved and more than half hanging out because of its size. "You have to have one of these to play them, but... they have stories and are a lot longer and stuff. I-It's worth it, though! They're fun." Of course he had his system with him. Playing Pokemon Go was also a great opportunity for picking up streetpasses.

Jamie stopped when they reached the corner, taking a quick moment to secure his 3DS again before going back to his phone. "It's a normal goldfish. And, um, it can heal! Kinda... It learns aqua ring, but other pokemon can learn it, too. I can show you a picture after I catch the seel. Goldeen is really cute."

With practiced ease, he worked at catching the seel, and he sure did look pleased when it only took two pokeballs.

"I... don't mind the questions," he admitted sheepishly, looking back up at her. Honestly, if he hadn't grown up with so many of the same nervous tendencies Isobel seemed to have, he might've been more anxious than he was right now. There was comfort in shared circumstance.

"Oh," she said, disappointed. "I'd been hoping I wouldn't have to buy anything else for them. I might have to reconsider then. Or - is that thing expensive?" Maybe if it was something really cheap, she could swing it. That was the hope, anyway.

"Okay! That sounds good," she gave him a thumbs up and a smile, watching as he caught the seel with ease. "You're a lot better at catching things than I am," there was a fair amount of admiration in her voice.

Hearing that he didn't mind the questions made a smile bloom on her face. "You're very kind!"

An obvious blush was his first response. Against his will, of course. It felt way too weird to deny her claims of kindness, so he held his tongue and waited for the warmth in his cheeks to settle down. Jamie did try to be good to everyone, even if his anxiety falsely told him it wouldn't matter either way.

"I-I've just been playing for a while," he admitted, sidestepping the kind compliment for now. "And I've got, um, experience and stuff." Hopefully that wouldn't sound too pretentious.

As he scrolled through his phone to find a good picture of goldeen, he sighed a little. "If you don't think you'll play other games, I dunno if I'd recommend a 3DS... even though I wanna recommend it to everyone. It's, um, a few hundred bucks, but I've played mine so much, a-and so many different games and stuff, that I feel like I got my money's worth."

Finally he held out his phone for her to see. On the screen was a goldeen. A pretty dang beautiful fish if you asked him.

"O-Oh, um... and thanks. F-For the compliment, I mean...." As he finally acknowledged it, his cheeks went pink all over again.

"Experience is cool! I, I think anyone who can stick with a hobby for a long time is very admirable; and you get to become really good at something if you do it for a long time, too! I bet you're really good at games - I'm not very good, but I haven't played a lot either so that's probably why." She nodded vigorously to support her own words, still smiling at him, even if it was shy.

Taking in his words, she hummed thoughtfully; "yeah, that's probably- probably a tad too expensive for just one or two games. I don't really know what kind of other games there are on a 3DS - are they all like, fight-y games? Because I, um, don't think that's too fun, or at least not when it's intensely fighting or-" she sighed, frustrated with her ability to express her opinion properly- "stuff like that. I like Pokemon though! Because it's not mean fighting? But yes, something non-fighting would probably be best." Gods, how many times did she just say 'fight' in one monologue? Tibbie wanted to hide her face in her hands out of embarrassment, but bravely soldiered on; "Do you, um, know of any games like that?"

Happily she was quickly distracted from her woes by the pretty picture on his screen. "Åh, that's so lovely! I love the, um, pattern on it? Is that what it's called? It's very pretty!"

An answering blush broke out on her cheeks at his, and she nervously fiddled with her hands. "Åh, you're very welcome! I mean it," she ended with a determined nod.

As he pulled his phone back, Jamie could feel another surge of deep-rooted excitement fighting to worm through the shyness and self-inflicted embarrassment. For the most part it succeeded, lighting his eyes with his own determination even as his cheeks remained splattered with color.

"T-There are tons of games without fighting!" he told her eagerly, "Some of my favorites are like that. Like, um, o-okay it sounds kinda boring, but believe me it's not. It's a farming game and you take care of crops and really cute animals and you can talk to all the villagers and even date if you want..." his expression became sheepish again, "It's called Harvest Moon. Well, the old ones were. Now it's called Story of Seasons."

Finally taking a breath, Jamie laughed apologetically. It felt like he'd rambled, but it was hard not to be passionate about the things that managed to make the lonely years before friendship more tolerable.

"And, um, there are a lot of other ones that don't have fighting, too. Like... Animal Crossing a-and the Phoenix Wright games." He took another breath, deeper, resolute. He was steadying himself. "M-Maybe, I-I mean if you wanna, um, I could... show them to you sometime..."

His excitement was catching, and she nodded eagerly as he described the game. "That sounds eminently fun!" And it did; "I love plants so um, that sounds perfect? And I like people too! I'm not very good at talking to them though - but that wouldn't matter in a game, right? Because they're not going to hold a grudge or anything. And it wouldn't matter if they did, because they're game-people, not people-people!" Maybe she could even practice talking to people? Or perhaps that was a bit too advanced for a game; either way, it sounded very interesting and she was really starting to warm up to the idea of trying it.

And then he pulled the coup de grâce; inviting her to see him again?! Isobel faltered, one foot lightly giving out before she quickly managed to right herself. "Y-you mean it? Like really? That would be- that would be amazing! I'd love that!" Wait, was she being too enthusiastic? "Um, if it's no bother to you, of course..."

That was something Jamie could understand. For a long time he substituted the friendly faces of Mineral Town or Forget-Me-Not Valley or wherever he happened to be when he picked up his handheld and popped in a game for interactions with real people. They were his friends, his confidants, his partners when he thought he'd never achieve such a thing in his entire life. Along with his fish, they'd been his best escape from loneliness. It wasn't perfect and it probably sounded childish to most, but for Jamie it had been an important step to finding something called happiness.

"They're a lot easier to talk to," he agreed, smiling in that sheepish sort of understanding way. "I still really like playing the games just to build relationships with the villagers. They all, um, have interesting things to say."

He swayed in place and continued, "R-Really, though! I-I think it would be fun... It's not a bother at all." Real friends were always a touch nicer than video game friends, after all. "We can, um, trade numbers if that's okay..." As he went to make a new contact in his phone, his eyes widened and he realized, "I never got your name! I'm Jamie." He laughed sheepishly.

"Yes! I mean, yes please!" Quickly she tapped in for a new contact, only to realise the same thing he had; joining his laugh with a giggle, she shrugged one shoulder and smiled. "I forgot all about that too! Not that I'm not, um, interested, but just-" she waved a hand in a gesture meant to be descriptive of her meaning- "yeah."

"Jamie's a nice name though! I-I think it's very cute," she nodded decisively. "I'm Isobel, or you can call me Tibbie if you want - it's my nickname, which you probably guessed," cue small awkward laugh and a blush, "so either is fine, really!"

"Anyway, this is my number-" making a new contact named 'Jamie' as she dictated her number, she ended her monologue with a shy; "and you can call or text anytime if you, um, feel like it!"
