This time, he was going to pay attention.

Having rescued the fabric from his earlier (failed) attempt, Vodyanoi got himself settled down beside one of the wagons. This was a good space to work. There was plenty of room and a good light, while the shelter of the wagon still provided some shade from the full brunt of the Oban sun.

Thus set up, he laid out the panels of fabric -- in the right arrangement this time. He made sure every part was in place, and all his tools were accounted for. He flexed his fingers, stretched his neck, licked his lips and got down to work. This time, he was careful not to let his thoughts get ahead of his fingers. Treat it like a performance, he told himself. You had to be in the moment when you played. You couldn’t think about anything but the beat and the necessary motions.

Sewing was… well, quite similar. Much quieter, of course, but there was a rhythm, and there was the movement of his fingers, and the skill of paying attention to the details while still seeing the whole. Maybe that was where he had gone wrong before. He hadn’t noticed how similar these two skills were. Sewing, he’d figured, was just… boorish manual labour, a necessary task in order to get a good costume. Now, however, he started to see it as an art of its own, on par with a good song and dance show. No, he wasn’t about to switch professions, but… he was getting the hang of this.

Finally, he held up his finished piece. It was simple, and not the most showy of garments… his earlier failure at adding embellishments had left him reluctant to go overboard all at once. But the fabric was lively, and it would make a good addition to his performance dress.
