This exact statement came out of the mouth of one of my classmates today. I was showing of my newly learned cartomancy skills to a friend and somebody else saw. To protect the moronic, I won't tell the name of this individual. I had just finished explaining the meaning of the second card I drew to my friend.(the 4 of hearts, if you're a stickler for details) "Anonymous" asked what that meaning was for, I explained what cartomancy was to her and she said the exact title of this thread. Honestly, I thought we were out of that mentality by now! It's harmless divination, I didn't start chanting some foreign language, I wasn't drawing pentacles on the floor in goat's blood. I just drew cards and said stuff. I live in a very small town so I don't know whether this is still normal or not, I really thought that we were out of the "burn the witches" mental state though. mad

Unfortunately, stupidity lurks and lives. And, if you'll pardon my opinion, look at our highest-ranking government officials. stressed
Too many individuals are uneducated about culture; there are parents that think anime is demonic because it isn't "American". There's also the issue that if you do not have a degree or some sort of title, many people will not believe you if you do clarify that what you are doing is not evil.
And even in that stance, there will still be people that refuse to accept the matter. confused

Something like that happened to me before only it was with someone that should have known me better and I expected him to not be so...upset about it. What happened was I finaly got my dad to realize I wanted to study wicca and things like that so the following year I got a penticle for christmas. When he noticed it e asked if I was wiccan and I said yes. When he heard this he went into his room and told me not to come near him. I thought he was kidding so I went and followed...he didn't like that. So when he finaly got me out I went to his little sisters room. I visit my dad every weekend and sleep in her room along with my little sister. He followed and told her to stay away from me. So I went out side looking all sid cause I was really upset and my sister who perfectly understood me followed. Knowing he was there, it was just a feeling actualy, I started telling my sister how disapointed I was in him for thinking such stupid things of me. All this happened after he knew me for about two yeas now. So after I told her he should know I would never hurt anyone and he should know that about me by know and that it was perfectly understandible if he hated me because he was brought up to think this kind of thing was evil. He steped out from behind the corner and said sorry. After he was interested and asked that very same question.

I suppose the fact that you had a pentacle might have been to blame. Until I read The Da Vinci Code I thought pentacles were something you used to summon the devil, and I don't even believe in the devil. Christianity spreads some pretty bad stuff about the arcane arts.

It happens all too often, I'm afraid. The original swastika, for example, was used in many cultures as a good luck charm and protective symbol. When the Nazi party flipped it around and used it as their sigil, suddenly the meaning for BOTH ways blended together.
It's much of the same with pentagrams; one was reversed as a symbol of Baphomet, which Christians considered a demon and thus allied with Satan. Now, even a positive, upright pentagram is looked upon with contempt as an evil thing. It's sad how misinformed and ignorant people can be.
Don't even get me started on magick...

It really annoys me how people will automatically think Wicca = Witchcraft = Devil Worshipping. Its not like that at all. I'm quite fed up with constantly explaining over and over again that Wiccans don't even believe in the devil, and constantly have people trying to argue with me about it, when they have no clue of which they speak. "Wicca is devil worship! She'll cast a spell, and the devil will come kill us all!" "o_O Umm, no. Wiccans don't even believe in the devil. Its not part of the religion." "So now you're saying Witchcraft is a religion?" "No. Wicca, yes. Witchcraft, no. Witchcraft =/= Wicca." "Yes, it is!"
I can't stand people who argue with me on a subject like this. They don't even know what they're talking about.

Actually, there was a case here in Indiana about a divorced Wiccan couple with a son. Luckily, it got overturned, but the original court decreed that the parent could not teach their son the Wiccan ways. (There are some other details to it, but that's the jist.)
The worst part of it was the judge asked him POINT BLANK if he worshipped the Devil. The response? "I'm sorry, your honor, but I cannot worship something I don't believe in."

My father has actually disowned me, because of my personal beliefs.
I am a Warrior, sworn to the Goddess as a fighter, a Defender, a Healer and a Teacher. My life is a constant battle, the struggle to defend my wards and charges.
Well, I came home on leave, and went to visit my dad. Now, I was dressed very nicely. Black silk dressy pants that shimmered silver when they moved, a shirt of the same material. On the right side, in a vibrant red, was a chinese dragon crawling up the side of the shirt, and on the left was the symbol of my path. (Crescent moon with a shooting star flying towards it).
he asked me, and I naturally told him. That was not a good thing. He decided to "beat some sense into me." Now, the man is 6'2", and a former Army Ranger. I'm 6'4" and a US Navy SEAL (former now). His apartment was pretty trashed by the time I took him to the ground.
His reason for me winning (never mind the multiple black belts) was because I was a devil worshipper, and doing "uh-holy" things with it. I just love bible belt christians.

Wow...that's why I'm a little more subtle. I've never had any open confrontations, but I have had my fair share of idiots. I was in a coffee shop, doing Tarot and wearing my hematite ankh. This woman comes to me, acting like a total snob, and says, "How dare you wear a cross and do Tarot?" After she left, my friend looked at me and we had a nice laugh on her account.

I would be doing a reading for a friend on lunch and I would have one person in particular calling me a witch and you know, the usual moronic crap.

One cannot pay too much heed to the fundamentalist Bible-thumpers. They hardly represent most Christians (there are nice ones, and even open-minded ones!), but we must pay attention to the fact that they do exist, and in large enough numbers to be of danger to Pagans. They are the ones who perpetuate the bad stereotypes of Witches and all who deviate from their uber-Christian ways. I can just see the scene in heaven...
Jesus: For my sake! You fundamentalist guys are giving me a bad name!!
I mean, seriously, some of these ideas they have are more far-fetched than most of our mythology and much of the Biblical events. Theres a site, www.truechristian.com , that denounces everything from The Wiggles to Count Chocula cereal. They even turn on Christians who use the ichthus (Jesus Fish) as a symbol. It's nuts.
