Aleksy let himself into Eve and Leila's apartment, mostly because he couldn't think of a way to announce himself any better than his urgent text message, which said: And then a few minutes later: And a few minutes after that: And then Eve'd said yes, of course, without asking even once if he was sure he wasn't being overdramatic. Aleksy was quite grateful for that, to be honest. Anyway. He let himself in, and took off his shoes, and gave Clover a respectful nod. He shoved his hands deep in his pockets like that would make the sudden lack of sling or bandaging less obvious. Then he said, "Eve? Leila? It's me."

They were in the kitchen. And talking in low, playful voices. And making out. Right there in the doorway.

Aleksy couldn't have imagined a better icebreaker, honestly. It was hard to feel terribly put-upon by fate when Eve and Leila were kissing each other senseless right in front of him, anyway. " Mom," he said, finally, exasperatedly. (Whoops.) "I texted first."

Leila's complexion ramped up from peach to tomato in a quarter of a second as she abruptly jumped off her wife's lap, landing in a frazzled but hopefully respectable standing position while she smoothed out her undone hair. She was giggling nervously, with an apologetic expression, as Eve smoothly rolled her chair to approach Aleksy and offer him a seat on the sofa nearby. There was a noticeable blush and and forced edges to her calm demeanor, but thankfully she talked in a way that convincingly suggested nothing awkward had just happened at all: "Sorry, sweetheart. We should have been paying more attention. Maybe try calling next time. What can we do for you?"

It didn't take very long for Aleksy to slide back into existential angst, though he wasn't nearly so glum about it this time. "I think I died and turned into a vampire," he said, sitting on the couch catty-corner to Eve's wheelchair. "I have fangs now."

"So does that mean you're not gonna want some juice?" asked Leila from the kitchen.

"I don't know," Aleksy said, volume climbing with post-adolescent angst. "Last time I tried to drink water I puked and passed out!" Okay, he'd also been literally starving at the time, but he honestly didn't understand what the ******** was going on. Was he like, a blood-drinking vampire? He felt fine after doing... whatever he did to Jeremiah. "You're the only person I trust who's been changed like this," said Aleksy to Eve. "I thought you'd know what to do."

Eve reached out to hold one of Aleksey's hands as he continued, looking equal parts puzzled and concerned. Vampire? Well, why not, honestly. She was a werefox and her wife was a seer. It was mostly the dying part that made it seem even more unusual than the usual unusual. "Well, I had to go to Other Ashdown to transform safely, and still do, but there's still a lot we don't know," she admitted. "How about we start with the basics? Tell me how you're feeling, Lex." Meanwhile, Leila sauntered awkwardly into the living room with a carton of apple juice and a couple of cups, which she set on the coffee table as she sat down on the other side of her couch. Friend was present as a familiar tickle on the ridge of her ear, and she wondered if the tiny familiar might know something. "You're not gonna want to put that orange thing in the dishwasher," she cryptically piped up after making brief eye contact with him. Lex already knew the drill with the psychic bullshit.

Orange thing?... Aleksy made a note on his phone. "Hungry," he said after a long moment. "I mean, I... ate... when I got back from the place where it happened. But it wasn't filling. It didn't help. But Mercer came over to check on me--he'd noticed I disappeared--and I..." He looked away. It was easier if he just didn't look. "I think I fed on him? He let me. But that doesn't make it right." Friend said, dead-flesh. Do not let him touch you!Aleksy, still staring at the place where the floor became visible past the arm of the couch, said, "I'm afraid."

" Dang," offered Leila, wrinkle-nosed from Friend's message. So Lex was undead? Because of vampire s**t. And contagious, maybe? That was something to bring up, but later. It wasn't going to do much good to stress him out more with another piece of bad news about his life. "Well, I dunno," she continued instead, after a couple more moments of thought. "Mercer consented. Most people don't eat from consenting sources who get to stay alive." Now she was blushing more, and rubbing her neck a little for good measure. "I get it's weird and painted as evil s**t, but if you're right that means you can eat without ever killing anything. Will it bother you if I think that's kind of cool?"

"I don't know if it doesn't hurt him," snapped Aleksy, who was very much bothered that Leila thought his newfound dietary needs were cool. "I may be draining years off his life, I don't know, I can't--there's nothing like what I am in the literature." Or on the internet. There were some things, but they all said oh no big you're just going to kill everyone you love. That was a big. "I can walk in the sun, I don't sparkle, and when I'm hungry I lose my pulse and I don't have to breathe," he said. "What part of this seems cool!"

"I think what Buffy here is trying to say," Eve started, with a very pointed look at Leila, "is that the way you have to eat now really isn't any more or less evil than the conventional ways. Right?" The strawberry blonde nodded apologetically into her cup of juice. "You're not a monster for trying to survive," Eve went on. "It's clear Jeremiah thinks that too, darling."

"It's people," said Aleksy, a little dumbfounded (but also hopeful). "It's Soylent Green, whatever it is, it comes from other human beings. I eat. People." He really wanted to be convinced that he wasn't a monster. But he ate people, which was sort of the point where you stopped looking for justification and started looking for handcuffs.

Something about that seemed a little off. Like, did that mean people who ate... berries, or pieces of living animals... hadn't eaten those things? Aleksy didn't know. He wasn't good at this semantic thinking. Instead, he flopped sideways over the arm of the couch and said, "Okay, ecologically I'm not a cannibal, but in practice."
