Is it Okay to be This Odd?
Rhun had been more than hesitant to take Stormy out since her emotions had been far more turbulent lately since Zaku's avoidance and DH being farther away than she desired. But it was getting to the point where he was desperate to try anything, hoping the fresh air would do her some good.
He was walking with her in town, keeping a close eye on her as they moved, knowing she would never even hold his hand due to her aversion to touching others, but he wasn't blind to the fact she had an easier time with being in contact with DH and on the rare occasion, Estrian. It hurt a little, but he was willing to overlook it as long as she was happy.
They had been walking for some time as he had suggested a few places to check out, but she declined everything he suggested, just walking with a disappointed look on her face.
It wasn't until they passed by an old antique shop that she finally paused, looking through the shopfront window, she appeared intrigued for once.
"Do you want to go in and look around? They have all sorts of things inside... I'll even buy you something if you find something you really like." he suggested with a faint smile, a little hopeful.
Stormy thought on it before nodding silently and walking in with him. She looked around, her eyes unable to settle on one singular thing as there was so much to look at. Matryoshka dolls, old rocking horses, vintage clocks, even old clothes from before the great war. It was interesting, and she did seem to kind of like this place. She was peeking into the old mirror on a vanity as she stuck her tongue out at herself and gave a small laugh.
Rhun noticed her demeanor changed in a store like this, and was relieved she seemed to be cheering up. Stormy suddenly bee-lined for some old fisherman knives and picked it up. Rhun showed a flicker of alarm, moving to take it from her, "No weapons." he insisted as he put it back. Turning back to look at her, she was gone. s**t.
Stormy wandered through the store with more delight now that she was alone. She was a little annoyed Rhun wasn't going to let her have another knife, but there were still so many interesting things in the store that she didn't care. It wasn't until she found a medical skeleton on a stand towards the back of the store. She stared at it for a few minutes before a voice startled her.
"Ewww, a skeleton." a boy with messy black hair spoke with distaste.
Stormy wrinkled her nose. "I like it." she proclaimed.
"Why? It's a dead person's skeleton. That's gross." he made the motion of vomiting.
"You're gross!" she exclaimed, starting to spark with her quick rising anger.
"Don't tell me you actually like this? You're weird."
Stormy frowned, his words hurting for only a brief moment. "S-So?" she retorted only to be met with laughter. It wasn't funny and she was getting even more mad. She stepped forward like she was going to push him in her frustration.
"Stormy!" Rhun barked to get her attention. She turned quickly and her static died down immediately as she looked like she was guilty of something. "I-I didn't touch him!!" she exclaimed in panic.
The kid looked freaked out, seeing what she was about to do.
Rhun approached her with haste, to make sure he could mediate if needed. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing." she answered quickly then frowned at the boy.
The boy glared at Stormy and pushed her suddenly into the stand behind her and ran off. "Weirdo!!" he yelled and darted out of the store.
Stormy seemed more exasperated and disappointed than angry now as Rhun quickly moved to her aid. "Stormy, are you okay?" he asked with concern, instinctively reaching out a hand to her. Stormy did take his hand to come to a stand and sighed with a frown. Rhun looked displeased about the other child, but not much he could do now. "What was that all about..."
Stormy's frown deepened. "He said I was weird because I really liked the skeleton." she confessed and stood there like she was in trouble.
Rhun looked over at the skeleton and frowned. Really? A skeleton? Well, at least it wasn't a knife. "Do you want it?"
Stormy looked up at him with a confused look then to the skeleton. She nodded slowly with an innocent look.
Rhun nodded and flagged down a cashier to help him with it. He was sure to get flack for getting this, but he felt bad about it all, and she did seem to have her heart set on it, and again, better than weapons.
Needless to say, Rhun was given some looks from the cashier.
"My daddy's a doctor and this would be really helpful in teaching." Stormy explained to the cashier with a bright smile who seemed to relax after the context even if Stormy wasn't telling the whole truth. Rhun wasn't even going to correct her, actually proud she had not made the situation even more awkward than it needed to be and even surprised she had referred to Estrian as her parent.
After getting it wrapped up, he headed home with Stormy, mulling over how he was even going to explain this to Estrian.
Rhun was sitting in the waiting room, anxious as he impatiently waited for the therapist to speak alone with Stormy. He had explained the gist of her problems over the phone and it was a huge relief she agreed to see her. He was nervous, hoping they wouldn't just tell him the same thing the other therapists said. It was a little more dangerous now because if they felt she was unfit for society, there was a small possibility they could order her taken away. At least what he had researched. It was the downside to going to a place where they had some rights. He took a deep breath, just trying to keep it together.
"So tell me about your home life, Stormy.. who do you live with?" Anise asked, a pad of paper at the ready to jot down notable things.
Stormy shifted uncomfortably. "..."
Anise frowned, "Okay, so tell me about your friend here? He seems very important to you. What's his name?"
"...rammos.." Stormy answered quietly.
"Rammos? That's a very unique name. Does he talk to you?"
"...I don't know." she answered softly.
"I see. Well Rhun told me that you haven't seem to have been feeling well. Do you feel sick?"
"...no."
"Hm.. but you haven't been eating.. does Rammos tell you not to eat?"
Stormy looked up with concern. "N-no. He wouldn't do that. I... just don't want to eat."
"And why is that?"
"I don't know."
"Do you feel sad?"
Stormy hesitated and nodded slowly.
"Do you feel like something is wrong?"
Stormy lowered her head and nodded.
"What is wrong?" Anise was writing notes as she went.
"...I'm weird." Stormy answered quietly.
"There's nothing wrong with being different, Stormy."
"Akash says that I'm crazy and that's why no one likes me..." she admitted, hugging the skeleton closer.
Anise frowned, "That's not very nice to say. Who is Akash to you?"
"He's my brother. We used to play together a lot and play killing time and have fun... but now he doesn't play with me anymore."
"What is killing time?" Anise asked with a slight concern.
"When we fight and try to kill the bad guys." she answered honestly. "DH says no killing time. Play nice. So we play Tiger Time instead."
Anise sighed, "And what is Tiger Time?"
"When DH turns into a tiger and we fight. I'm not supposed to use powers because I get carried away and destroy everything."
"I see. So you have trouble holding back. Does your brother play Tiger Time too?"
Stormy shook her head. "He watches television on the pad all day. He wants to travel. And I want to go to, but he doesn't want me to go anymore because he thinks I just want to stay with Mr and Mrs. Dad."
"Do you want to stay with... Mr and Mrs Dad? Who are they?"
"They are my dads... but I hate them. They don't care about me. They abandoned us like everyone else. We don't need anyone. We just want to go home."
"And where is home, Stormy?"
Stormy paused and frowned. "...I don't know."
"You don't know where it is? Or do you not feel you have a home?"
"I don't have a home."
"What about Rhun? He seems to care about you a lot. He's here trying to get you help because he's worried about you."
"...because I'm crazy."
Anise sighed, "Why do you think you're crazy? Not what Akash said to you... What do -you- think makes you crazy?"
"I don't know..." she looked down at the skeleton. "I like skeletons.. and I forget things all the time.. and no one wants me around... I'm not supposed to hurt others but I do it all the time... I.. don't belong. I'm different." she explained with a defeated look.
Anise thought for a moment on how to approach her words. "I understand that you are a little different from others, but there is nothing wrong with being different. If you feel like these are things you would like to improve on, I am here to help you do that. So that you can feel like you do belong."
Stormy looked at her, but said nothing.
"Stormy, do you trust me to do that for you?"
Stormy frowned, not wanting to answer a question like that.
Anise didn't press for an answer, now focusing on the skeleton again. "So can you tell me more about Rammos? Rhun said he bought you the skeleton and you have kept it with you since. Is there a reason you keep him with you everywhere you go?"
Stormy thought on the question for some time. "Rammos was at the antique shop... I like him."
"Does he say mean things to you too?"
Stormy shook her head. "No, he's nice."
"So he says nice things to you."
"..uhm.. he doesn't say anything but that's why I like him. He's quiet."
"Do you talk to him?"
"Sort of... I just know what he wants."
"I see. So you do everything together."
Stormy nodded, "We have a lot in common."
Anise nodded, "Well, I understand that must be very comforting for you to have found someone you get along with... although, I can't understand the way you communicate."
Stormy thought on it, frowning. "I don't know..."
Anise nodded, "Do you feel you have this connection with anyone else?"
"No... just Rammos."
Anise nodded again. "I see. Well, I'm sure Rhun is very worried for you, so let's go out into the lobby and tell him you did great today." she offered with a smile.
Stormy smiled a little and seemed a bit more hopeful. She nodded and got up, dragging the skeleton with her into the waiting room area where they were playing cartoons on a television and had some toys and games to play. She walked up to Rhun and looked at him, "...she says I did great." she relayed with a slightly more prominent smile.
Rhun smiled faintly and nodded, "That's good. I'm glad to hear that."
"Stormy, why don't you play with some toys for a bit while I tell Rhun about how well you did, hmm?" Anise offered, met with a nod from Stormy.
Once Stormy was farther away, Anise sat next to Rhun to address him. "Well, I'm certainly glad you're seeking help for her now before her condition worsens.
Rhun nodded, his smile fading. "What can we do for her.."
Anise took a breath, "Well, I think her keeping a diary or finding someone she trusts to talk to about her problems. First off. Secondly, I feel like her brother may be a bad influence on her, from what she told me, he's very mean to her and that is having very serious affects on her self-confidence."
Rhun nodded in understanding. "We are aware of the issues with her brother, although I had no idea he had been doing it to Stormy as well." he sighed.
"I recommend getting her into attention-sustaining activities and hobbies.. like reading, gardening, singing, listening to music. Anything to get her mind off her stress and anxiety. Because her symptoms only worsen the more stress she's under. Switching homes or caretakers, mean words from her brother, physical illness, and even breaking off relationships. And seeing as she's still a child, she could have had a very severe episode during her teenage stage that could really damage her mind or worse. So it's good you're doing something about it now. The more manageable her symptoms are now, the easier it will be when she grows up." Anise explained. "I don't think her condition is so bad that she should need medication.. just therapy and a stable and accepting home life should help tremendously."
Rhun nodded again, hopeful for Stormy's health. This therapist seemed to actually believe in Stormy's potential to get better, and that was a huge relief. Although... "So what about the skeleton... is it helping? Or is it making her worse?"
Anise sighed. Yes, the skeleton. "Right now, it's her coping mechanism. It's something she feels she can connect with and it's honestly helping ground her in the face of her brother's mean words. Her condition can alienate her from others, which it seems to have already. I know you want to challenge her delusions about the skeleton, but it will prove counterproductive to helping her and it will push her farther away from those she needs the most. Her delusions are very real to her even if it's not real to everyone else."
Rhun ran a hand through his hair, "So do we pretend it's real.."
Anise shook her head, "You should recognize her delusions are real and important to her, but you also need to make it very clear that you do not personally share in them. So where she might say Rammos speaks to her, acknowledge her feelings about it, but firmly let her know that you cannot hear him. Have discussions that steer her towards using other mediums to deal with her problems. Things that are safer and more productive. Eventually she will learn that she has more to help her than things that don't exist."
Rhun considered it, sighing, and nodding. "Thank you."
"Alright, please bring her back regularly so we can work on ways to accommodate new obstacles in her growth and mental health. She's a sweet kid, and I hope I can see her smile more." Anise smiled and shook Rhun's hand, turning to Stormy. "Hey Stormy, it's time for you to go. But I'll see you next time, okay?"
Stormy looked over, blinking. "...okay." She got up and walked back over to Rhun, ready to go.
