My brother hears The Cure blaring from my stereo, or my earphones, sometimes. It's not really 'his kinda music' he says. Doesn't make much sense to me, because the Cure has so many different songs and styles, they should please everyone. But my brother is stupid.

'God, you always listen to that Emo.' He says.

'The Cure are NOT emo.' I say. 'They have emo songs, yeah... But they aren't emo.'

But I've been thinking about it. They have emo songs. That's for sure. 'Pictures of You' is pretty emo. 'All of this' is emo. But then they have 'Close to Me' and 'Mint Car' and 'Lovecats'. I mean, hell, that's not emo. Not even a bit.

But what do you think? Do the Cure, in your mind, qualify as Emo?

Heh, Cure's lyrics have some emo-ism in it, and a few songs have some emo texture, sure. But "emo" didn't really become a real popular term 'til the mid to late 90's. Cure started as a new wave, post-punk band (and I personally regard them as such more widely).
They, and other bands of the time, all became a major influence to the emo scene (but they also helped to create the scenes for pop-punk, industrial, grunge, and other genres...oh yeah, and everything people debate to be as goth). But for a sure thing, "emo" wasn't a term widely used in the early 80's. New wave and metal were the teen-angst of the time.

What exactly does he listen to? Maybe try showing him like... "One Hundred Years" and "Labyrinth" for some of the "heavier" side of the Cure. I hear the Bloodflowers album has such songs too but I have to be honest I don't own that yet. stressed
And how old is he? It's blasphemy not to have some respect for the Cure! xp

He's a year older than me.

It's sad that he still is more immature than I am.

Actually, it's funny and sort of pathetic.

But he likes crap music, so...

It's okay, I don't own a real copy of Bloodflowers either, I have a copy a friend burned for me. When it came out I was just out of the hospital (AGAIN and I am fearing I will have another trip soon), unable to go to a store that carried it, and to be honest, I really didn't like a lot of the songs at the time, but I did fly across the US and went to 4 shows for that tour, so that makes up for the cost of the album.
I think of the Cure as the Cure. I didn't even know the term Emo until I started Gaia.
As far as Mcphee's brother: That is sad, heck, my MOM even likes a few Cure songs and respects Robert.

A lot of emo teens seem to like the Cure, but I don't think that the Cure are emo. They have some songs that have emo themes or an emo sound but, on the whole, I think not. They have too many different styles that aren't related to hardcore angsting to define them as an emo band.

Nope. Emo was a 90s thing. Some emo bands might have been a bit Cure-inspired, but The Cure really doesn't have much to do with the genre. Some of their stuff sounds a bit emo-ish, I guess, but ALOT of their stuff doesn't. Go blare Pornography and you'll see what I mean.

I don't think Emo even qualifies as a genre anymore everyone tacks it on to every single band its annoying whee

What the hell is "emo" anyway? "Emo" stands for "emotional" , yes? Then I think in that case ANYTHING that makes you laugh, cry, dance, put you in a happy or sad mood, or evoke any kind of emotion must be "emo". What a stupid name for a genre.

well yeah! I mean Emo is what? Singing about your feelings, singing about relationships, being angry... those are called songs.. Yeah so youre right, that would make everything emo xp

Emo is a specific type of hardcore punk, which started in Washington DC in the mid-80's. The Cure has nothing to do with the emo scene, and the emo scene has nothing to do with the Cure.
Emo is short for "emotive hardcore", not emotional. Lots of music is emotional, that doesn't make it emo.
