 Ren was a bit of a mess. After all he hadn’t expected Mai to remember him at all or even the incident where she had changed his life so drastically. After all he had just wanted to cheer her up. You couldn’t blame him for thinking that she had just read what he sent and then put in the back of her mind never to think of it again… or at least never to put it together that he had sent the gift. So when there was a knock on his door he thought it was his roommate or something and thought nothing of getting up and walking over to open the door. When he noticed her slightly shy smile and the fact she was holding the pen, he turned utterly red. The next bit wasn’t his best ever as to his horror he accidentally shut it right in front of her face…. Yeah just slam the door on your crush, that would definitely win him points.
“I am sooo sorry. I just acted before my brain caught up with my body” He pleaded looking like he was going to cry. Luckily Mai was still standing there and looking mostly amused. Amused was good, he could take amused.

 Mai had looked over the letter over and over for what had to be about a hundred times. She knew every word by heart and there was only a couple people at the school that knew that lotuses were a big thing for her family. So she knew, or at least she was about 90% sure who had given her the clip. Of course Vanna always stressed manners, and she wanted to say thank you. Of course by the time she got to Ren’s door she had started to doubt herself. What if she was wrong? Ren was utterly shy, even more of a wall flower than she was. It would embarrass the both of them if she went up to the door and she was wrong. Then again even if it was Ren, which she was utterly convinced that it was, they still might be very much embarrassed. However she wanted to thank her fey friend for the lovely letter and do it somewhere semi private. She hated how her classmates teased him and bringing this to their attention would definitely end up with them mercilessly teasing him. Clutching the pin to her chest she took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Only to see Ren’s gaze go from her to the pin. He flushed a deep shade of red and then the door was shut on her face. She had to bit her lip to keep from chuckling. Well she couldn’t say that had never happened to her before. At least now she was back to 99% sure Ren had written the letter

“I can’t believe that I did that. Once again I’m sorry. I promise that I don’t randomly just shut doors on people. I just got startled and ….” Ren stopped. Mai knew, or at least he hoped she knew it was an accident, well a startled response, and here he was just making a bigger fool of himself. Besides obviously she had a reason for being here. It was best that he just bite the bullet and get whatever was going to happen over with.
“Uh, well I suppose we have some things to talk about…” then again maybe she randomly liked carrying the pin around, although considering it was a hair pin she could have just put it in her hair. Oh what was he supposed to do? She was just supposed to accept the gift and move on. He wasn’t prepared for her to figure out it was him.

Mai waited patiently for Ren to open the door again, as she knew that he would. He wasn’t a malicious guy at all. In fact he tried to get along with everyone. It made her sad that most people just ignored him. Sure enough though before she could get swallowed up by her thoughts Ren wrenched the door open and spent the next few minutes apologizing. Mai tried holding up a hand or something to get a word in edge wise and then waited for Ren to calm down a bit.
“It’s okay. I’m not offended at all, I promise. I shouldn't have just sprung a visit on you out of the blue” Mai stated after there was an appropriate gap and then realized they were back. “I obviously got your letter and the gift. It was really lovely and they both really did cheer up my day.” Okay, maybe she should have planned this out better. Now they were in that awkward situation where she thanked him. He was totally embarrassed and they were both standing out in the hallway.

Ren listened as Mai finally got a word in and ended up weakly smiling. Sure he was still mortified as all get out from the door incident and he still wasn’t sure how she had figured it out, unless she really did remember the couple of small conversations they had, but that wasn’t the point. The point was, that he had managed to set out to do what he had wanted to do, which had been to cheer her up and she didn’t seem like she was dropping by to return the gift. Ren hadn’t ever planned on telling her it was him. He had just planned to give her the gift and continue on with life for lack of a better plan. Obviously fate or whatever had different plans. “I’m glad you liked it. I’m sorry if the letter was a bit much. I just, well it was my first attempt at really trying to cheer someone up and I guess I sort of just started babbling away.”

“No, it wasn’t too much” Mai started and then sighed. She didn’t ambush Ren practically just to mumble over her words, if she was going to do that she could have just sent Ren a note back or something. No she was here for a reason. “I… wanted to say thank you for telling me that I inspire you. I can’t say I totally agree with that considering it was something that anybody would…” She trailed off. First off hadnt she just said that she was here for more than just mumbling. Secondly wasn’t the reason that they were standing here no one else in the classroom made a move to help Ren. “Well it’s something that everyone should have done”Okay… that wasn’t too hard. She could do this. “I guess I also wanted to say, thank you for noticing I was down and going too far to cheer me up. I truthfully was pretty sure that you sent the letter. I don’t actually really tell that many people I like lotus flowers and I remember we had a small conversation about them that one day before class started.”

Ren opened up his mouth as if to refute the fact that she was uninspiring. It was hardly the truth. However if he really did point out all the things that she did, wouldn’t he just sound stalkerish? This wasn’t really the case, he just had a lot of time to notice things, and okay he had a really big crush on Mai so of course his attention was going to often flicker over to her. Hmm, what was safe. After all Mai was standing right there in the hallway and how many opportunities was he really going to have? Didn’t he say that he had wanted to talk to her, and while it was obviously an embarrassing start she was still standing there. “Speaking of the hairclip I mean it’s okay right? I picked an okay size. I mean I noticed you’re kind of holding it” Ren blabbled. Yeah mention the hair clip and not the fact he was paying enough attention to even notice she had lost a hair clip. Great now he had to defend himself in his own head. Really he had just been in a position to see the hair clip being left behind and then it got stepped on and broken, which is why he started looking for a new one instead of just returning her old one.

It was obvious that Ren had more to say if his fish imitation was any indication but he was obviously uncomfortable with whatever his train of thought. She wasn’t sure if she should step in and say something or wonder if this was an indication that she should leave. However Ren spoke up again before she could settle on what to do. “No… No, it’s the perfect size; well, I mean it looks like the perfect size since it’s about the same size as I usually wear. I’m not wearing it because, it’s just, I tend to lose a lot of my hair clips and so since this was such a lovely gift I was afraid of just sticking it in my hair and it falling or out something awful like that,” Mai hurriedly explained, it was the truth. She had a whole bag of really cheap gold ones in her dresser. Ugh, she hadn’t wanted to make him feel like the gift was inadequate or anything. It really was a nice gift.

“I understand, but don’t worry really. If you really like it then you should wear it. As long as it gets a least a couple uses I’ll be happy. Well I guess really I’m just more happy that you like is all.” Ren stated, this time smiling for real. His embarrassment was slowly dying down; well it was until he noticed that they were still standing in the hallway. “I’d invite you, but I wasn’t exactly expecting any one to knock on my door today to be honest, not that I uh really mind and all and…I’m babbling. The point is, room is messy and your older brother would somehow find out that I just invited you in and well probably kill me.” Ren stated. He had seen the older Chimera around Mai enough times to know that Vanna tended to be slightly over protective. However, when it looked like she was going to say goodbye he shook his head. “So… would you go and get breakfast with me instead…” oh… oh where the hell had his mind gone to...? Well breakfast would be lovely and it would be with Mai, and Mai was lovely and… now he was a tomato.

“My brother wouldn’t... uh kill you” Mai started totally ignoring the look of disbelief that was on Ren’s face. Seriously, why was Vanna so hit and miss with people? “I mean, it’s not like he never allows me to go out and make guy friends, and he’s really not super over protective I swear. Well at least when it’s not winter. Besides He knows you gave me the clip.” She really ignored the look of panic on ren’s face. “Anyways he’s… busy and not coming to the academy today. Come to think of it, I should probably thank you for allowing me to crash your morning.” She hadn’t really been turning to leave although she felt like it was a good conversation stopping point, but still the request caused her to be taken back a bit. “Breakfast huh; well I guess I did miss it due to trying to catch you first thing. Breakfast would be absolutely lovely Ren” Mai smiled. She watched as Ren darted back into the dorm room to get ready and looked down at the clip in her hands. Well it wouldn’t do to hold it all day, and with that she placed it in her hair. She’d just make extra sure she didn’t lose it. “Ready?”“Yes, lets go”
