Magic, one of those things he should really learn for when he was in ‘Other’ Ashdown, one of those things that also seemed to be inviting the rest of his life as well. Places that used to be ‘normal’ seemed increasingly affected by magic creeping in at the edges. Harmless things, or seemingly harmless thing like his odd ability to find the information he was searching for, to the ‘pinch’ now.

His ‘dad’ looked damned tired, or maybe that was partly an observation based on how long he’d known the man.

“Are you sure you’re up for this?” He asked cautiously.

He really wanted to know the man’s state of mind, but there was more of a father and son barrier between them, than a friend barrier. It was a blessing, and a curse.

It had not been much of a walk to make it to other ashdown, Jeremiah's eyes finding an entrance relatively soon. If he bothered to think about it, which he did, it seemed like the veil, the places he found to cross over, were more frequent.

Or perhaps it was just easier because his eyes were more attuned.

Who knew.

"I'm fine," he replied with a small twitch upwards of his lips. "I haven't practiced in a couple days myself." They weren't even that far from his house, so they could practice in the street if they wanted.

"Using magic is like anything else, you've got to stretch the muscles and build them up. Otherwise using magic will tire you out sooner and quicker."

“Ugh… I do wish it weren’t always raining here sometimes. I wonder why it is.” He sighed.
He did give a sidelong glance towards Jer though. “…I think you’d say you were fine the same way I would. I think we’d both say we were fine right up till we fell over.”

The fact he had honestly done that at the job fair not withstanding.

“…So… my first experience with this will probably be ‘A’ less than spectacular and ‘B’…exhausting?” He offered with a wry smile. “Good to know.”

He hesitated and then added.
“I um… I’ve been experimenting too by the way. I’ve um… left some boxes under beds just to see if they stay put sort of. They don’t appear in regular ash down, but for the most part they do seem to stay where I put them. I mean… I mention this because I put a stash of power bars and band-aids under your…Other Ashdown Bed. Some Asprin and stuff too.”

"Rain and opposite seasons ..." Jeremiah shook his head, glad that he always dressed warmly regardless of the seasons. Though that was now in part because of his perpetual chill but it certainly helped because he could find himself needing to go to other ashdown at any moment.

Pulled in without realizing was not something he really expected.

Zac got a look while Jeremiah flicked a hand upwards in the air, a chill breeze blew past them a moment and then the rain stopped falling on them. A barrier was overhead, now simply above them as opposed to all around. "I likely would, so would you, but if there was something truly wrong I would let you know.

"... you could do spectacular but it would exhaust you and put an end to me teaching you anything." Jeremiah raised an eyebrow about the knowledge about things being left in other ashdown in the house. "That's interesting. I'll admit I have been in the house recently and didn't look under the bed. I, ah ... scorched my desk, however, here and it showed on my desk in Ashdown."

“Y-yeah, I think only, how should I put this… significant changes transfer? Like um…if you move a book you don’t really see anything change on the other side, but if you move like…the angle of a bed, you DO see that.” He gave a soft laugh. “… I uh… I’m guessing that scorching counts in the upward end of the significant scale.”

“Well, I’ll try not to do something like, be abnormally spectacular.” He said wit a nervous smile.

“What should we start with? Magic or… me showing you the silly kit I placed here in…case you got in trouble.”

He’d almost come back to put one under his own bed in –this house, but so far, his only box was under his bed in his Mother’s house.

"So larger scale basically?" It made sense. "Next time you come to my office at work, I'll show you the scorch." That portion of his desk was kept under paperwork now, forever hidden because he was not putting in for request for a desk. "... though there are some things that just don't exist here or even look the same, so I would wonder how you'd be able to change one to impact the other."

He shook his head, pushing the thought away.

"You can show the kit later, Zac. It'll be a good thing to do while taking a break." Jeremiah tried to not think about the fact that he too had left a couple first aid type things around. "Have you tried any kind of magic at all?" As that would let him know where Zac was when it came to things.

“I um, I sort of haven’t.” He admitted. “I wasn’t sure where to start, or if I might just…blow myself up. It’s odd enough that things happen in regular Ashdown, but after seeing that cold fire from that one time, the one that got your back?”

He twisted his braid around one finger, playing with the end that stuck out from the hair tie, a wild mix of blues, purples and most currently a bit of deep fuchsia to give it a more ‘galaxy’ look to it.

Jeremiah nodded, a hand rubbing along the side of his neck at the mention of the fire and his back. It was still there, that ice on his spine, and had not faded.

"Only if you've got the will and mind to do it," he said slowly, "but I don't think you have to worry about that." There was a covered area they were coming up on and he tilted his head towards it. Jeremiah's hand flicked again when they were under it, dispelling the barrier over their heads that had been keeping the rain off of them.

"There's different kinds of magic," his fingers twitched a little bit, fire flickering at his finger tips a moment, "from the herbalism to actual spell casting. Heliodora has, ah ... a unique way about it."

“How um… how unique are we talking? I mean, does it work or?” He tipped his head looking almost anxiously concerned. He scraped one fingernail against the side of his thumb, worrying at his lip.

He did stare up at the place the spell had been.

“…that…was pretty cool though.” He admitted.
“Was that from Heliodora or was that… “ He shrugged, unsure whom to ask over as a tutor.

"Heliodora set the frame work, I've been practicing on my own," Jeremiah responded with a twitch of his lips. "It works but it's unique. It's as easy as holding an image in your mind of what you want to do and attaching a gesture or a word to it to make it work, give it shape."

A hand was held up, amusement clear in his eyes as he said, "Lumos."

A ball of light appeared and floated in the air in front of them.

Zac laughed softly. "Lumos?" He grinned.

He tipped his head slightly, studying the light. "I wonder if you could make a Patronus." He said with a small smile. "I wonder if it would protect you if you did..." He bit his lip, thoughts trailing off.

"I should get you a wand." He teased. "You're a wizard ... Jer"
It felt strange to say the man's first name but, the joke really didn't work as well otherwise. Really he should have said 'Jerry' but that just sounded wrong.

He took a breath, and then thought of the light he was looking at. "L-Lumos" He said, taking the page from his 'Father's' book.

"I probably could," Jeremiah replied, one of those telltale lip twitches giving away his amusement. "Nox," was said, his fingers snapping and the light flickering out of existence.

Then an eyeroll at the 'you're a wizard, Jer'.

"Coincidently, that does make you the third to make that joke." He shook his head. "I doubt it ever gets old but I do believe that more something is followed, the more powerful it could be. Since Harry Potter is all the rage ..." That would stand the reason taking a page from it would make the magic powerful as well, albeit draining.

He watched as Zac tried the magic, to see light appear as it had for him, because this really was the best kind to start with.

“Well, you do have a good name for making that joke.” He said with a hint of a smile.

That smile brought with it a small flicker, a spark that wavered, and once observed grew stronger for a moment before vanishing with a small ‘pop’ sound.
Zac’s shoulders sagged, it took something out of you to do magic was the realization, it wasn’t like the ‘passive’ magic that just seemed to happen like finding books, this was wanting something and making it real.
He blew out a breath of air and glanced towards Jer to find some opinion there.

"I do," he replied with a chuckle, pleased to see Zac able to cast the magic though his head tilted as it disappeared. His son looked a little winded but it was to be expected.

"It's like endurance training," Jeremiah explained. "You can't immediately go the distance, you've got to work up to it. When I first started, it winded me to practice too much but now I can hold a shield up for a fairly long time without worrying about it tiring me out."

“Wow…. I’m less effective than a mini flashlight.” He said with a derisive laugh. “… I think, I think I started questioning doubting if I could really do this for long and it died… I guess that makes sense with what you said too, that and the fact it really takes something out of you.”

He exhaled and shook his head in wonder.

“Is… is the size of what you want to do proportionate to how much it takes out of you?”

“L-Lumos!” He said again firmly trying to summon the light back. It did wear you out, but he’d made the light before, he COULD do it again.
