The presence of the rock that went peak of the mountain at his back was as palpable as the distance that yawned past the edge of the cliff mere inches from his hoof tips. It was an old mountain, yet humble, Eldrin thought as he surveyed the space before him. The view went on for miles. Most of it was forest but occasional small lakes and streams dotted it here and there. It was definitely as rewarding as he had expected it to be when he had spotted the tiny rock shelf from miles away nearly a week ago. He let out a long sigh feeling all tension leave his body as wind ruffled through his coat and tugged at his antlers. It smelled of fresh pine forest and coming rain. The breeze was growing stronger. Dark storm clouds loomed ominously on the horizon. He would have to find shelter eventually for when that storm broke. Or maybe not. A sojourn in a rainstorm might just do him some good. It always felt to him like the energy and pouring rain left him feeling a little cleaner, in mind and spirit if not body. Though his new companion might appreciate some shelter he thought with half a glance at the young saber tooth lounging on a rock behind him, away from the edge. His glance was acknowledged with a twitch of tail tip.
When Eldrin had started his journey to this point, several day ago, he had been alone as he usually was. Sometimes he would take shelter with those who accepted the aid he offered as he was passing through but more often than not it was hard for him to stay in one place long. He had taken his time wandering in the direction of the mountain. Once on its slopes he had slowed down even more, meandering where he pleased as he sought paths that just might bring him to this point. That was how he had happened upon the cat. Whose name he later learned was Lorcan.
Lorcan had been out hunting breakfast one morning when he accidentally found himself in the territory of a rather grumpy old wolverine. The altercation had reached a rather loud state when Eldrin arrived and used his diplomatic skill, as well as a well placed threats with his antlers and hooves to put an end to it. After revealing that he was a wanderer himself Lorcan elected to stay with Eldrin. At least for the time being. That had been two days ago. They weren't the most chatty of companions but rather found familiarity in the silent presence of one another. Many times Lorcan would dash off into the bushes and not be seen for hours. Eldrin never questioned where he was going as it wasn't his business.
The wind had picked up to a steady gale before Eldrin left his perch at the cliff's edge. He ambled back along the rock wall looking for a protected spot big enough to shelter them both. It wasn't far before he found a half- formed cave that was out of the wind. It wasn't big enough to be a permanent home for any creature but it would be enough for them during the rain. Lorcan, who had been following him went to the back walked out a spot and settled down with a yawn. With a last look at Eldrin he rested his head in his haunches and closed his eyes. Eldrin left him to return to his vigil at the cliff's edge where he would stand in the storm hoping that maybe the hypnotic lightning would dredge up some memory of his past. It wasn't likely. Hadn't ever worked. That didn't keep him from having some sort of hope.
