When Duncan had told Aina that they were going to a summer festival today, she was excited. Aina had expected Durem’s festival to be the same as Barton’s county fair, in a way, and she was absolutely, totally wrong. There weren’t any animals or hay bales or rides in sight, and though she was disappointed by that at first, she was quickly swept up in all the things this new corner of Durem had to offer her. She had no idea what Kyoto was, but if the Little one in Gaia was anything like it, she absolutely loved it.
The cherry blossom events had come and gone through most of the city for the season, but the trees were kept even more vivid and alive with the help of magic, painting the place with bright spring pastels. Music was bustling down the closed off street, the sidewalks flooded with yatai and sprinkled sparsely with a few other food trucks and event booths. It was a lot to take in all at once, but Aina was happy to do so, especially with the help of a disposable camera - they hadn’t been there for more than an hour by the time she’d taken lots of photos, especially of the people marching around in costumes.
“Why are so many people dressed funny, Duncan?” Aina asked, her disposable camera aimed and ready at a few taiko drummers preparing themselves nearby. A few women in colorful dresses passed by them, and Aina watched as they disappeared into the crowd. She startled with the sound of the drum, and she glanced back at the taiko drummers, timidly clutching her backpack handles.
“Well, a lot of them are dressed in traditional Japanese clothes. They’re pretty, aren’t they?” Duncan asked, looking onward at the drummers once their performance began. The crowd around them grew denser as they proceeded, and Aina seemed just as thrilled about the noise as she was about the gaggle of people. She began urging them away, pulling Duncan away to a quieter part of the street just ahead - though, he noted, it seemed just as busy there as it was before.
“S’too loud,” Aina complained, hugging herself closer to Duncan - thankfully, they managed to pick through the edge of the crowd without much issue, and Aina quickly distracted herself with another photo opportunity just ahead. “Are they in Japanese clothes?” she asked, pointing in front of them.
“Those are just costumes, Aina,” Duncan assured, laughing - he couldn’t quite pinpoint what, though they did look a tad like those characters from Anita’s video games. “Hm,” he said, pressing his hand to his chin, “Should we ask them?”
“It’s okay,” Aina replied, shyly, though she dutifully took a quick photo of the cosplayers as they left. Once that was done, she pointed just next to them. “Is that Japanese?” she asked, hopeful.
“No, I think that’s just - a man in a cape,” Duncan laughed, though it was quickly stilted by the glimpse of a glowing rune and ribbon in front of the man. He startled, though the realization came a second after Aina’s, and she was quick to pull them both forward to Mister Fisch and the mystery girl with him.
“Mister Fisch!” she shouted, though her voice was too small and quiet for the crowd - “Mister Fisch! Your Raevan is here!” she yelled again, flailing her hands.
“Mister Fisch!” Duncan waved, too, his voice a few volumes louder than the Frei's. “Excuse me!”
“Mister Fisch!” Aina shouted again, equally as eager to shout as she was in catching his attention, “Your Raevan is really pretty!”

If Lorenzo had failed to notice the familiar faces in the crowd, he had good reason. He was busy wrestling with immense stomach pains, a result of humoring a raevan who a) was dead set on instagramming food from every food stall at the festival, and b) did not eat. Having made the mistake of having breakfast before they left, he was currently in the throes of regret, having purchased, posed with, and eaten ikayaki, candied apple, choco banana, cotton candy, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, kara-age, and takoyaki so far in no particular order. The last food stall (thankfully) on Vesna's list was the one she was currently dragging him to, where brightly colored kakiko-ri was on display. At least, he supposed, that was mostly just shaved ice. As a man who normally didn't eat much for one meal, let alone eat multiple meals in one sitting, he was currently considering how discreetly he could loosen his pants if he pulled his sweltering cape closer around his stick-skinny frame.
"What filter should I use for this one?" Vesna chattered, floating ahead of him, and a little above the crowd. She floated upside down to meet his eye and dangled her phone in front of his face.
Seeing a picture of takoyaki in his state, especially bobbing sickly up and down in his line of sight, made Lorenzo reach weakly for his mouth. "Clarendon," he said quickly, choosing at random.
"Really?" Vesna asked, looking back at her phone again and frowning. "I thought maybe Lark..."
"That was the one I meant," Lorenzo affirmed quickly before she showed him again. "Lark."
"Sugoi!" Vesna said, and bit her lip thoughtfully. "Do you think that's cool? Sugoi?"
"It's a little appropriative," Lorenzo offered. "How about Классно?"
"This isn't the Russian summer festival." Vesna informed him haughtily. "But I guess I can stick to just using English." She spun around and said, "After this, I want to get a yukata so I can fit in better. You should get one, too!"
"Those girls before seemed to think I fit in fine," Lorenzo pointed out.
"They thought you were cosplaying," Vesna interjected. "You stood out so badly that they thought it was on purpose."
"That's cool, though, right?" Lorenzo asked. "They said I was sugoi."
"Yeah, it's cool if it actually is on purpose!" Vesna spun away and refocused. "Anyway, kakiko-ri comes first. Think about the yukata."
Lorenzo craned his head to find the kakiko-ri stand, and saw that it was closer than he had hoped. His stomach already protesting at the thought, he cast about to distract himself, and was surprised to hear his name in the crowd. Thinking that the same group of girls were back, he spun around to fend off the attentions of yet more teenagers, but instead found some more welcome familiar faces. Thankfully, he reached out for Vesna's arm and called, "Duncan, Aina! Good to see you again!"
Vesna was displeased at being disrupted from her mission, but when she saw who was calling them, her face lit up in a smile. She didn't know the pair who were beckoning, but they were saying she was really pretty, and a cute raevan about Lorin's age was an even more exciting prospect than kakiko-ri.
Lorenzo caught up to the pair and gestured at Vesna, clearing his throat to introduce her officially. "This is the raevan I'm supervising, Vesna. Vesna, Duncan is one of my former clients, and this is his raevan, Aina."
"Hi!" Vesna exclaimed beamingly. "What'd Dad un-die for you?"

As soon as they caught Vesna and Lorenzo's attention, Aina hummed, holding firmly onto Duncan's hand to charge them through the crowd. It was quite a change in mannerisms for Aina than before, when she quietly and politely waded through the festival street. Duncan couldn't help but laugh while he paced to catch up at a speed that was a tad faster than he was used to.
"What a pleasant surprise, seeing you both here! It's very nice to meet you, Vesna." Duncan smiled, nodding to both Lorenzo and Vesna; she was, to him, a younger Raevan in appearance than he was used to seeing. "Your father helped us revive a horse of our family acquaintance," he brightened; "Ah! You must know Maree?"
"Your papa, um, undied somethin' for me, too," Aina piped up, shyly; she couldn't help but stare up at Vesna in all, her cheeks flustered. "Her name's Agnes an' she's a butterfly. An' I really like all the flowers in your hair..."

Vesna waved at Duncan carefully. She had never really interacted with anybody older than Lorenzo's mother before, except for people who were already dead. She wasn't quite sure how to treat him, but as he began to talk to her, she opened up a bit.
"You have a horse??" she asked enthusiastically. "I've never seen one up close! No, I don't know Maree. Is that the horse's name?"
Lorenzo here coughed into his sleeve, a sound which, to the trained ear sounded suspiciously like a quickly strangled laugh.
"'Un-die' isn't really the term we use in the business," he corrected Aina gently, looking to steer the subject from Maree in case (horror of horrors) Vesna decided that she wanted to meet her someday. "The actual term is 'revive'."
"I believe in business casual," Vesna said decidedly, sweeping past Lorenzo's correction with an airy wave, and hopefully sweeping her mind away from the horse business with it. She floated down to Aina's height and said, "I like your flowers, too! And I'd like to meet Agnes sometime. She sounds really cool! We have this undead cat named Buddy, but he's, like, pretty gross. Have you met him?"
"If you want to come by any time to give Agnes a checkup, you can meet him," Lorenzo added. "I've been meaning to check in with you to see how she's doing."

"Maree isn't a horse!" Aina giggled, and Duncan chuckled, too, both of them keen on interpreting Lorenzo's brief fit as a simple cough. "She's my friend, an' her horse's name is Mr. E. He's really lazy now, just like my papa's dog Seabiscuit," she beamed, her enthusiasm shining through her brief stage fright, as if a lazy horse was something to be proud of. She blinked up at Lorenzo at his explanation, tilting her head at his correction, but seemed wholly more eager to agree with Vesna's side of things - she flustered with Vesna's compliment, hands reaching up to press her horns. They were still nubs compared to their fully grown state in the winter, but her red flowers at the base were as bright as ever - just like, as Aina saw them, Vesna's own flowers were.
"You can meet Agnes! She's at home, though," Aina noted sadly, though she quickly brightened up again. "But we can hang out an' stuff! We can just give Buddy a bath," she nodded, "Unless he's gonna eat Agnes." She recalled back to a time when her aunt's cat tried to eat the butterfly, but she puffed up her chest, intent on believing Vesna's Buddy was not quite so Evil.
"We haven't met Buddy yet," Duncan explained, smiling. "Aina's been taking very good care of Agnes. She's a very well-behaved butterfly," he laughed at the oddness of he'd said, "Ah - Mr. Fisch, Vesna, are you both hungry? We were just about to go get some lunch."
"Grandpa said I could have shaved ice! We can share if y'want, Miss Vesna," Aina offered, hands gripping her backpack handles.

"He's probably just recovering still," Lorenzo explained gently. Resurrecting Mr. E had been a success, but even when a full resurrection was successful, it could take months for the subject to fully adjust to normal life. Lorenzo had gone back for a few follow-up appointments, but if the lethargy was a side effect of the resurrection, only time would tell if it would fade.
"Buddy's pretty lazy, too," Vesna volunteered. "I thiiiiink that's just a cat thing though, even if he is, like, super dead looking." She frowned thoughtfully. "It might be better to leave Agnes out of Buddy's way- I've seen him try to eat a lot of things." Emphasis on try. Although Buddy's digestive system no longer worked, Buddy's tiny undead brain had yet to properly process that fact. "But maybe I can visit you to see Agnes some other time!"
"Well, we'll see about a complimentary check in," Lorenzo said, "And see how it goes from there, if you want."
His stomach flipflopped at the word 'lunch', but a second later he felt a wave of relief. "Frei can eat shaved ice!" he said, seizing upon this new information. "Wonderful, Vesna hasn't been able to try any of the food here so far."
Vesna's face lit up. "I get to try some myself?? I'd love to share!" She puffed out her chest and added, "I'll treat, since I'm older."
"Well, technically, Aina's older," Lorenzo pointed out. He spared her mentioning that also all the money she had to treat with was his.

"Cats're lazy? I wish August was lazy... maybe she isn't a cat," Aina mused, staring perplexed at the ground.
"August is very much a cat, Aina," Duncan replied, smiling worriedly at the Frei. "I'll remember to make an appointment, Mr. Fisch, but we could always have less professional engagements."
"Miss Vesna an' Mr. Fisch should come over," Aina suggested, looking curiously up at her guardian. "We could have tea..."
Without skipping a beat, she held out her hand for Vesna to take, wings twitching with excitement. The shaved ice stand was not far from them, and Aina was happy to start her adventures with a new friend so out of the blue. "Let's go!" Not one to overthink the nuances of Raevan physiology, Aina beamed with pride, gripping the strap of her bag. "Yeah! Since I'm older, I can-- um-- treat!" She dug into her bag for her small coin purse of an allowance, painstakingly earned through months of chores and digging through couches.
"Yes, most Raevans can have their fair share of water and ice, but it doesn't do much for them nutritionally. Not too much flavoring, girls, or you might get a stomach ache," Duncan warned. Aina didn't seem to hear him, but Duncan followed just behind the excitable Frei as she waded through the crowd. The process was slow-going, and he addressed Lorenzo again after yet another group of cosplayers pushed between them ad the girls. Speaking of which, Lorenzo, how long has Vesna been with you? She's delightful."

"You have a cat?" Vesna asked. "Is she a living cat?"
"Living cats aren't necessarily better than undead cats," Lorenzo said a tad defensively. "And Buddy is active. He kills more rodents than he can try to eat."
"Yes," Vesna sighed, "I guess I can relate to Buddy in that there are a ton of things I can't eat."
"We could have tea?!" Vesna gushed, "Like we can drink tea??" looking hopefully at Lorenzo.
"I think we can work out a schedule for tea if you can drink it," Lorenzo promised. "But let's see how you handle the kakigoori first."
"Let's go, then!" Vesna said, accepting Aina's outstretched hand. "But I'm treating. I'm younger, but I'm bigger, so I can probably eat more kakigoori anyway." She wrinkled her nose and said, "I guess raevans really are super different from people. How old are you, Aina? I'm, like, five months old...?"
"Good to know, though," Lorenzo said, watching the pair of raevans as they charged ahead. "Vesna started a food blog with Rhedefre, but she's just been making me eat all the food. I don't think I even have room for ice right now." It would be worth Vesna treating Aina so long as he didn't have to wolf down every flavor of kakigoori at the stand by himself.
"Mmmm? About five months." Lorenzo informed Duncan. "I got the call on Valentine's Day, and then she spent a month or two at home so I could test her reflexes and help her adapt. She's been outside more and more since April, though. She's quite social!" He gestured to Aina. "I'm glad they seem to be getting along well. With the clause I gave Aina when I resurrected Agnes, I did worry that I'd be pressuring her to befriend someone she didn't feel comfortable with."

"No, August's my uncle's cat," Aina corrected, giggling; "Mhm! She's an alive cat. Buddy sounds really cool, though... um, do they have-- um, undead cats at the pound? Is that where you got 'im? My uncle said he just found August on the side of the street..."
Duncan raised his brows at the news; August, as adorable as the feline was, had been somewhat of an enigmatic presence since her introduction last Halloween. "Aina can drink tea without cream and just a bit of sugar. Vesna should be fine, so long as she avoids refined foods," he offered, smile brightening as the two Freis joined hands. It only helped Aina float faster, which only widened the distance between the girls and the two men.
"Hmm," Aina considered Vesna's offer, but she was quick to agree, giving the younger Frei a quick nod. "Okay! But can I make you tea when you come over?" she asked, looking up at the rusalka. "'M a year an' nine months old," Aina replied, diligently, "My birthday's September 18th! D'you remember your birthday?"
"Ah, Rhedefre!" Duncan laughed, "It's been a while since I've seen him. How has he been? And you shouldn't be afraid to set limits, Mr. Fisch," Duncan raised his brows, "You wouldn't want to die a bloated man before Vesna is a Sigel."
"Ah, then it hasn't been long," Duncan nodded in understanding, chuckling; "I see. You'll have to remind me again what Vesna's soul and essence are," he said, "But I never would have guessed that Vesna was only five months old. Aina was still quite sleepy back then," he mused, smiling back at Lorenzo, "But you don't have to worry now. I don't think she feels much pressure in making new friends, and the girls seem to be getting along swimmingly, wouldn't you say?"

"I don't know how Dad got Buddy," Vesna considered. "He's just kind of always been there. I guess he was alive once, but I don't know if Dad found him somewhere and fixed him up or what." She shrugged and ended the thought with the obligatory Fisch Family Buddy Defense: "He's a good boy."
"Good to know," Lorenzo said, relieved. "If she can drink tea, maybe my mother will be willing to accompany her on some of her epicurean excursions." Nicolina Fisch had often dragged her son through social teas, and the thought of being able to do so with a granddaughter of sorts would surely send her over the moon. "I would have let her try more foods, but being a guardian makes me fret more than I thought it would." He grinned wanly. "I'm used to raising the dead, but raising the dead is a different story. As it were." He gave a moment for the pun to land, and then anxiously cleared his throat.
"Deal," Vesna agreed. She pulled out her phone from her purse and typed Aina's birthday into the memos. "Pretty much everyone I've met is older than me," she pouted. "I'll remember your birthday! And my birthday is easy to remember, it's Valentine's Day! Dad gave me a bouquet when he picked me up at the Lab." She looked up as they approached the kakigoori stand. "What flavors do you want? This is the first time I've ever eaten human food, so I don't really know what I want yet."
Lorenzo latched onto the change of topic gratefully. "He seemed well, considering the circumstances I met him under that day," he said. "I was glad he was there, he seems like a good role model for Vesna. Very responsible." He laughed nervously at Duncan's joke about his stomach, and discreetly rubbed it as it protested noisily. "Indeed."
"Vesna's essence is a false reflection and her soul is a rusalka- my original client," explained Lorenzo. "It's been a bit of a process trying to define what kind of relationship we have now, but I still prefer to treat her as professionally as I can. What's Aina's essence- and her soul, again? Forgive me, I'm not sure I ever actually asked in the first place." He considered Aina's outward appearance and silently guessed that it must be some kind of plant, although many raevans, Vesna included, seemed to be fairly floral.
"Vesna's energy levels could be because of her food source," he mulled thoughtfully. "She could be eating something else, too, but primarily she seems to eat reflections- any reflective surface she would normally show up in becomes empty except for scenery. She doesn't seem to be able to control it, so I imagine her energy intake is fairly high." He looked ahead at the two frei and nodded. "She's extroverted as well as energetic. I can't say I relate, but I appreciate it in others."

"August an' Buddy should be friends," Aina nodded in firm conclusion. If Buddy was a good boy, the Frei figured he could teach August some meaningful things, like being nice to her papa or not knocking full cups over. As they approached the kakigoori stand, Aina admired the displays, staring at the various shaved ice that other festival goers were happily receiving. They were very colorful, and some even seemed to come with fruit.
"I'll get you flowers on your birthday, too, Miss Vesna! D'you have favorites?" Aina offered, tugging lightly at Vesna's sleeve. Looking back at the flavors, she hummed indecisively, one hand against her cheek. "Umm... what's your favorite colors?" she asked, staring at the wide array of choices. Outside of tea, she wasn't allowed to try other human foods quite yet, but it wasn't something the pomegranate wanted to admit.
"As it were," Duncan chuckled, looking a touch concerned. "But it's natural to frighten when you're a new parent. I'd say you're doing quite well, judging by how happy Vesna seems." He slowed as they neared the kakigoori stand, allowing the two girls some space to choose on their own.
Duncan grimaced, a halfhearted laugh leaving him. "Poor boy always seems to be caught in so many bad circumstances," he mused. "A rusalka," he repeated, thinking on the name; it seemed familiar, though nothing immediate came to mind. "Aina's essence is floating rain, and her soul is a pomegranate," he replied, smiling. "A false reflection... how did that present itself, if I may ask? It's hard to imagine."
Aina glanced back at the two men, just to make sure they hadn't gotten lost. Tilting her head back, she waved, and Duncan returned it with a smile.
"How interesting... well, a hungry Raevan, in my experience, has never been a very happy one," he laughed, gesturing to the kakigoori stand. "And I'm glad it doesn't seem to dampen Vesna's enthusiasm over other types of food. Mr. Fisch, would you like some kakigoori? Or," he amended, amusedly tilting his head forward, "Shall we take you to the taiko ceremony, so the vibrations can help knock the food out of your stomach?"

"I like all flowers," Vesna said diplomatically. "You don't have to get me anything, though! Lorenzo has to get me a bunch of things because he's my dad."
She examined the color choices at the kakigoori stand behind them critically. "Well, blue is nice," she began, "And pink is obviously cool. I like yellow... and green... I guess every color is great! I mean, they don't have any boring colors like brown or black or anything because it's a festival." She scratched her head. "I guess we can't choose by flavors. Or at least, I can't, since I've never tasted a flavor. Sooooo..." She closed her eyes and waved her hand and pointed at a random one. "Green for me!"
Lorenzo looked ahead at Vesna and Aina. "I think she's just a happy person," he observed, "Although I have been trying to accommodate her to the best of my ability."
He laughed. "Rhedefre seems like a helpful young man, so I can imagine that he might be easily imposed upon." He had often been imposed upon himself, but as a less forthcoming person, and one who now had his own practice, he found he was a little less at risk these days.
Remembering the essence jar, he said, "Floating rain seems like quite the sight, but false reflection was a little plainer than that- just a jar of murky water until you looked into it closely, and then the reflection looking back at you wouldn't be quite right." He recalled, "It always made me seem a bit sly, but it was funny when my mother looked into it- It turned her hair pink."
He waved as well when he saw Aina looking back towards them.
"What way does floating rain affect Aina?" he asked. "Vesna seems to be unable to be photographed because of how she eats, amongst other things. We also believe that she has a slight magical glamour, it seems to affect how people perceive her to look."
He laughed and rubbed his stomach. "I think that after Vesna and Aina are done, the taiko ceremony would be excellent. Vesna loves anime, but she could use a taste of traditional Japanese culture as well."

"I know! I wanna get you somethin', though," Aina replied, giggling; she tapped at her chin while she thought of a good choice in bouquet, but electing to keep it a secret until Vesna's fated birthday, she smiled and looked onward at the kakigoori options. She watched Vesna as she closed her eyes and made a blind choice, and after nodding, Aina did the same, squeezing her eyes shut as closed as she could to honor the practice.
The first time she opened her eyes, she was pointing at the side of the street. "Oops," she laughed, squeezing her eyes shut and pointing at a random direction again - this time she managed to get her aim right. "I got purple!" she smiled, tilting her head in an attempt to read some of the labels ahead. "What do green an' purple taste like?"
"Oh, that is interesting!" Duncan laughed, trying his best to imagine Lorenzo as sly - if anything, the boy seemed to be anything but. "Ah," his expression fell, and he looked sympathetically at Lorenzo, "That must be very jarring for her, the glamor? I hope she's able to control her eating in time. Aina still struggles with it, but she seems to eat away the density of things around her - objects float and become more brittle. And I've no need for the weather channel anymore," Duncan chuckled. Once they managed to reach the foot of the line, he grinned, gesturing to the remainder of the festival.
"Wonderful. There's enough of tradition here for a full evening," he replied. "You will have to remind me what anime is. Are those the cartoons?"

"Well!!" Vesna said, squinting thoughtfully. "Green makes me think of summer, so something... warm?? But it's shaved ice... And purple makes me think of stars, so I bet it tastes sweet and cool!" She shrugged. "It's still really hard for me to imagine what flavors taste like. I guess we won't know until we try!"
Their turn was coming up in line, so, on account of the fact that she looked older, Vesna was the one to order, grabbing their shaved ice and handing the purple one to Aina with a flourish. "We'll try it on three, okay??" she said. "One... two... three!"
Taking a bite, she scrunched her eyes shut tight and made a sharp humming sound. "It's soooo cold!" she gasped, and laughed. "I was really surprised! But I think green tastes good. How's purple taste?"
"It's hard to say," Lorenzo said thoughtfully. "It bothers her more that she can't control her eating, I think, since she seems to want to take pictures of herself and such. Natural enough for a girl her age, I suppose." He listened to Duncan's description of Aina's powers and was quietly struck once again by how diverse raevans were. "It seems like there's a lot that could be done with her powers- that's another complaint Vesna seems to have- she doesn't find her powers to be terribly exciting."
He laughed. "Those are the cartoons- by now, I've seen a few, myself. I can't say I see the appeal, but I know they're popular with children her age." He scratched his head and admitted, "Part of me sees how focused so many of them are on romance and worries that her interest is less a normal teenage hobby and more a fixation on romantic ideals leftover from her soul's influence. But I want to believe in her- she's proven to be thoughtful about these sorts of things when it counts." He asked, "Does Aina like television? I don't know how much to let Vesna watch, but it's hard to stop her when she decides she wants to do something, even if I try."
