It was a nice day to visit the beach, a little overcast but only just enough to gentle the midday sun. Mr. Bitterberry came into sight first, swooping low near Sunny and then past to go inspect a promising tide pool. America came soon after, bearing an oversized canvas bag and a cardboard box bearing the logo of the local bakery, The Sweet Spot. The girl herself was nearly dwarfed, though, by the large cream colored sun hat she wore, nearly every inch of it covered in googly eyes of varying colors sized. America waved at the witch with a broad grin and held her bounty aloft for admiration.

Sunny laughed, setting her notepad aside and getting up to meet America. "You weren't kidding, this hat is very silly," she said, reaching up to touch the brim of it without bothering to ask permission. "And Mr. Bitterberry is as cute as you said!"

Pulling a tiny bag out of the big bag, America opened it to reveal a very small blue can. It was conical and covered in gold stars and every obviously a wizard's hat. "Since you said he was magic," America explained with a grin. "But first!" Another hat was pulled out of the big bag, this one much larger. "I made one for you too!" The little camper was currently a bit of a disaster area after last night's arts n' crafts binge.

Sunny very carefully lowered her cupcake crown onto her head and tied the ribbons beneath her chin. "Do I look cute," she asked, fluttering her eyelashes at America.

"You look sweet as ******** with a cherry on top," America laughed and nodded, googly eyes spinning wildly. Sunny was ridiculous and ridiculously cute in the hat. Edging in closer she pulled out her phone and held it up, "Now get in here, we're gonna celebrate...whatever today is, and take a buncha cute pics to commemorate it and make everyone else jealous."

"Don't ask me, time is an illusion," said Sunny, leaning in. She knew the selfie drill by now, though she had no phone to take one herself. "Everyone will be jealous of our cute hats. I am sure of it."

Kissy faces and stupid grinning commenced. #FunWithThaSun #SillyHatDay #UWishUWereHere #GreatGooglyMoogly #EyesCreamHat #CupcakeCutie #AshdownBabes Eventually, though, it was time for The Important Request. Holding up the tiny hat with an encouraging smile, America asked Mr. Bitterberry if he would accept this wizardly cone in holy hatrimony.

Inhuman violet eyes and unbirdly bright eyes met, held: and then Mr. Bitterberry hopped forward and bent down his head for the tiny hat. "He has accepted your request," said Sunny solemnly.

Gently the little hat was placed on his head with a soft elastic thread to keep it in place for longer than 2 seconds. With a reverent whisper, America said, "Yer a wizard now, Mr. Bitterberry." And then, "Now for cupcakes and pics!" The cardboard box held a bakers's dozen of the treats, all with rainbow frosting and an equally colorful variety of toppings. The best one, though, was small as a thimble, and presented to the bluejay with great ceremony. America might have teared up at the sight of Mr. Bitterberry in his tiny hat with his tiny, bird-friendly, cupcake. "This is the best day."

"I will remember this day for the rest of my life," agreed Sunny, flopping down on the sand with her delightful cupcake hat and her chin pillowed on her arms. "You got such a stern familiar. At least he's got a sense of humor, right?"

There was a pause here, not because America disagreed, but because she'd shoved an entire cupcake in her mouth. Eventually swallowing it down, America beamed and nodded, a stray bit of blue frosting on her chin. "He pooped on my friend, the night we finally met." Which was nicer to focus on than everything else that had happened that night. "Pretty sure Mr. Bitterberry thought it was funny as anything. Whenever he's near him now, he likes to threaten a repeat." Laying on her back, America slid off her shoes to wiggle her toes in the sand. "It's nice having someone at home now. Even if he flies off for hours and hours, he keeps comin' back."

"You're family," said Sunny, which was kind of cheating to say. Mr. Bitterberry Jones's name was a dead giveaway to what exactly America thought of her bluejay buddy. Sunny picked up a cupcake of her own and swiped a finger through the icing, giving it a taste. "Ugh, that's so sweet!" Sunny rolled over in play-agony and declared, "I'm gonna die. Of flavor. What is this even made of?"

"A ******** of sugar," America nodded in confirmation, picking up another. "That's why you gotta have the cake bit too. Soak up the sugar into bread-y sugar and balance it out." An example of her preferred cupcake eating was performed in slow motion as she bit through a good half of it, frosting and all. A giant streak of frosting covered her nose by the end. "Okay so it's a bit messy," she concluded, crosseyed as she tried to clean off her nose. "It's an artform."
