http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/petcolumns/showarticle.cfm?id=422Quote: In veterinary medicine, embryo transfer technology has been practiced for over ten years, and the procedure is increasing in popularity. Fertilized eggs are retrieved from donor horses and implanted in the uterus of recipient horses that can carry the foal to term. According to Dr. Debra Sauberli, a board-certified theriogenologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, veterinarians will "flush" a fertilized egg out of a pregnant mare 7 to 8 days after ovulation. To perform the flush a catheter is inserted into the uterus. The catheter has a cup that fits over the cervix to form a seal, and a special solution is flushed through the uterus, a liter at a time. The flushed fluid is then filtered to separate cells and debris from the solution. The small amount of solution that is left is set in a Petri dish and examined under a microscope. A trained eye will find the egg, no larger than a speck of dust, somewhere at the bottom of the dish. Immediately after flushing, a donor's embryo may be packed in a transport tube filled with a special solution and then placed in a cooled transport container (the same kind used to hold semen samples from stallions for artificial insemination) or transferred directly to a recipient mare's uterus. I havn't found any information regarding HUMAN transfer, but this shows tha some sort of pregnancy transfer IS possible. I'm actually suprised we've never heard of this before since it has apparantly been going on for 10 years. What are your opinons on this type of "flush of fertilized egg" and subsequent serogacy?

i'm worried about the potential risks... it seems kind of haphazard to me... "suck out the egg, throw it in a bucket, put it somewhere else, then dump it in another horse", basically.

It's not just the egg though, it's actually fertilized and thus a "person" from our standard (well if they weren't horses! wink ) I agree it seems pretty dangerous, but as a alternative to abortion it seems like it could be good.
Also, why the heck are you awake at 6 AM?

As opposed to you, who is up at 7 am? Well, I suppose it's 6 am your time...
Sounds interesting. How is it for the horse's health?

It seems that all involved parties turn out fine.
The only downside I can see in all this(if it were applied to humans) is we may become a society such as in "The Giver" where we have breeders0literally, not in the childfree propaganda sense- and birth parents. However, if it was more an adoption type situation where once the offspring is transfered, the "creation mother" signs away her rights, I think it would be more feasible.
Also, it can only be performed very early in a pregnancy. I think in this case it is 8-10 days. So to make it feasible for humans there would have to be very early pregnancy testing after an unprotected sex act if a person would like to participate in the transfer.
Overall it seems like a very good alternative to abortion especailly since the procedure does not seem much more invasive than a typical abortion.

That's pretty cool, and with something like that readily available, no one can claim they're being forced to remain pregnant if abortion is banned. It might be risky, but it's a hell of a lot better than just killing the embryo outright.
Though I can't imagine why any woman would *want* to be pregnant instead of adopting...that's just weird to me...

If I could save a life by doing so, I'd be pregnant.

Alot of women would feel the child was more bonded to them if they got to take part in the pregnancy and give birth to the child. Not saying that adoptive parents don't bond with their children, they certainly do, but a pregnancy and childbirth experiance definatly enhances the bond...also it would allow the adoptive parent the opportunity to nurse the child, which in addition to being more nutritious for the child, would also increase the parental bond.
Or like lymelady said-some women might simply do it in order to donate their bodies in a sense so that the child would have a chance at life.

and if some women can't get pregnant due to infertile eggs, this could be a solution. bringing an already-created embryo to them...
broorel- why were YOU up at 6 am? xp actually, it was 7, and i was doing my routine of checking the guild forum before heading off to school.

lymelady If I could save a life by doing so, I'd be pregnant. Same here if I had money and a way to appointments in stuff, if I do that now it'll most like be given up for adoption (better then death though and possibly find a good home). But what's the differents between that and some ways of seragated mothers. (some woman can't carry the baby so they have another carry it)

if one of my friends gets pregnant and the douchewad father runs off, i'd be glad to help pay for the pregnancy and help her take care of the child- either until she puts it up for adoption, or as long as the child needs a father

if this were to go for humans, i would have to say that it is verydangerous and i think its not a good choice. the mother should have the baby first and then give it to the adoption mother.

I agree, the mother should have the baby one way or another and put it up for adoption. It is a way to not have to care for the baby, and save its life. smile biggrin
