At four twenty-three in the afternoon, the streets of Destiny City were mostly empty, most of the citizens on their way home from various work or eating in the myriad of restaurants that were scattered along the roads.
Caspian stood on the steps to the large, grand Destiny City library, his skateboard propped vertical under his arm, a book in his hand. He wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention to his surroundings, though he probably should have, nose buried as he made his way slowly down the steps.
The book was entitled Criminals of the 21st Century, and while Caspian wasn't exactly a reader most of the time, the research paper he was supposed to be doing for one of his classes meant that he had to at least make some sort of effort.
Still not paying attention, Caspian took one wrong step, slipped, and promptly skidded down the last three steps of the library, landing in a heap of papers, books, skateboard, and flailing limbs on the concrete sidewalk below.

Libraries were indispensable resources when you were homeless and Arkin spent a great deal of his time using their free resources: WiFi, bathroom facilities, and plenty of reading material. He had been tucked into a corner table since early that morning and would have remained there had his stomach not started rumbling a reminder that he hadn't eaten since the night before. He was just tromping down the stairs, his bag weighed down with a new book and bumping against his hip when the fellow in front of him went down. He tried to swerve out of the way at the last second, but his foot landed on the edge of the next step and immediately flew out from under him. His first instinct was to protect his laptop, causing him to twist in the opposite direction. He landed on his right hip with an audible grunt. As thin as he was, he was going to end up with a bruise on his bone. "God dammit!" He hissed. "******** careless sonofabich--" kuropeco You're all good! Thanks for the start!

Most of his papers and things had gone flying in his unceremonious collapse down the stairs, and Caspian rolled over onto his stomach, rubbing at his backside in the process. He clambered onto his hands and knees and gazed around at the litany of pages floating gently around him, and then over at the young man he'd also apparently brought down with him.
"Yo, dude, it was an accident," said Caspian, getting to his feet. He climbed up a few steps, moved over, and offered a hand to him, his other on his hip.
"You okay? I ******** crashed everywhere, my bad."

"You should be more careful," Arkin grumped, glaring up at the stranger who had caused the accident. Luckily there weren't many other people around, so their pileup stopped at two. He chided himself for not making sure that no one else had been leaving at the same time: other people always caused problems. He eyed the proffered hand for a moment before reluctantly accepting the help up. Normally he would have ignored it, but his hip was aching something fierce and he didn't want to topple back over in the process. Besides, he needed to try not to make too many enemies the moment he moved to town. "Your papers are getting away." Once standing he stomped on a couple before they could flutter any further down the steps. "Hope they aren't too important."

"Next time I'll send out a warning beep," said Caspian in a deadpan voice, rolling his eyes, but there was a grin on his face. Despite the other's surly nature, it was not as though Caspian was ever easily offended. For a moment he thought his offer of help wasn't about to be accepted - but then it was, even if it was somewhat grudgingly.
"Oh, s**t. Well - "
Caspian lunged at a particular paper that was threatening to fly away and snagged it just before it did. Stuffing it into his bag, he started to collect the rest, which were in a jumble here and there and everywhere; some had landed at the bottom of the steps, which seemed ridiculous.
"I was working on a paper for my English class," said Caspian, now running after another that was floating merrily towards the left. "An informative essay on the repercussions of crime in the twenty and twenty-first centuries," he intoned, deliberately melodramatic.

"That's not a bad idea." Arkin said it as if he were completely serious despite the eye-roll on the other's part. Even so, Arkin nearly wandered off then and there, leaving the man who had assaulted him to clean up his own mess. It was only the self-reminder that he didn't need to make enemies so soon that caused him to pause. Arkin began to pluck up some of the fallen papers with a grudging sigh. The burning in his hip wasn't going to get any better, making him wonder how difficult it would be to locate an opiate dealer. Maybe he'd ask the Finn; not that knowing how to forge documents meant that he'd be familiar with the drug trade. "You know, most people type their work... Then you hit the save button and you don't have to worry about actually losing all the work you just did." His tone was a tad venomous, a bit sarcastic, and, oddly tinged with amusement.

Caspian almost turned around and made a face at the other, but refrained at the last moment. Darting around like a pinball in a machine, he hopped from step to stop to try and gather up the rest of his papers, stuffing them unceremoniously into his bag.
"Yeah, and most people don't know how to say 'please' and 'thank you,' " Caspian called over his shoulder, and he flashed a grin as he ambled back over to the guy. "I like writing things out so I can see them, I'm a very visual learner, y'know, and there's a difference between seeing something on a screen and seeing it in front of you."
He held out a hand for the papers that the other had collected.
"Thanks. I'm Caspian, by the way."

"'Please' and 'thank you' are overrated. I don't care what others think of me enough to suck up to them." He plucked up papers more slowly, and only those immediately around him. "I suggest you type after you write, then... Or you risk losing all your hard work." Arkin thrust the papers he'd collected out, wincing a little when Caspian reached out to take them as though afraid of being touched. He was careful not to actually move away, however, aware that it would indicate weakness. His stomach dropped at the introduction. Introductions usually meant that they expected one in return. A list of names flew through his brain as he made a quick decision: "Jonathan." kuropeco I apologize for the wait! I'll try not to do it again <3

"It's only sucking up if you're trying to get something from whoever you're talking to," said Caspian airily. "And I'm pretty sure that's most people nowadays, so maybe you're right after all. Not caring what people think about you, though, I can get behind that philosophy."
He grinned over at the other, collecting the papers rather messily. He saw something flicker across the man's face, but Caspian couldn't quite tell what the expression meant; maybe he just didn't like people in general? He didn't exactly seem like the most sociable guy, after all.
Then again, neither did half of the people Caspian seemed to have met lately.
"Jonathan," he repeated, committing the name to memory. "A nice, normal name, I like it. You come to the library often? Do you have a nickname or do you just want to be called Jonathan?"
