Eve followed Lily through the door to Other Ashdown just in time to see the girl's flesh ripple with fur again and her body elongate impossibly, arcing out like an inchworm in the middle of a step forward, and in that moment she understood the distress she and Jamie had been in during their first transformation a little bit better. The instinct, as always, was to reach out and talk, but the attempt was thoroughly inhuman as her own body pulled itself back into the form of a fox once again. Her transformation earlier had been a powerful, transcendental experience. In light of recent events, this one was met with less mindfulness and more worry and more guilt.

As soon as she had her four legs balanced she trotted up to Lily with a subdued expression and questioning eyes: are you okay?

Inversely, now that Lily had known what to expect of the change, it slipped over her comfortably, padding along on her paws with an inquisitive tilt to her head. When the fox came through, she spun around and chattered a greeting, bumping nose to nose with a blink.

She sniffed at the air as she plodded forward, sneezing in the mist of the rain. There were supposed to be others here, weren't there...? She tried to ask Eve, but it came out as a cat-like cry that shrank into a whine, gnashing her teeth.

This was going to take some getting used to.

I saw Jamie leave with friends of his. He should be alright.

This is what Eve wanted to say, but it was a complicated set of ideas to communicate with the limited grunts and bodily gestures available. She could still vividly remember the feelings encapsulating messages as they grappled with Michael to send him over to this side. Was that something they were supposed to be able to do? If a half-frenzied were could communicate half-formed ideas with a touch... that was a question for the Prideful One, among the many she already had.

They had to learn to talk to each other.

Remembering the Prideful One's acknowledgement of her greeting, Eve worked a paw into a patch of mud, shakily drawing out a recognizable letter J. J for Jamie. This she stood behind, barking curtly she did so, before standing on her haunches to cross her forepaws in front of her and flapping them twice in a mimicry of a hare's floppy ears: she was signing RABBIT. Or hare.

Well. That was part of it. How could she communicate that she felt he would be safe without needing to give a whole lesson right here? She tried settling fully to the ground and giving a relaxed expression, in a similar way to how Lucas had done to help calm Jamie down before.

Lily's ears flickered as she watched Eve work, sitting patiently. Jamie and the others weren't there, nor were the wolverines, did that mean they'd been sent to...Other Other Ashdown? Trying to panic was going to do her no good, and so instead she shimmied her back legs down to a seated posture, watching as the fox scribed out a...candy-cane? She tilted her head with furrowed eyes, and then it became clear. J. She wrote J.

Lily was less clear on the charades, but after the second flap she began to get the idea. Jamie? So Jamie is... Her eyes followed the fox as she rolled down on the ground, peaceful and sublime. Well. If Jamie was in trouble, Eve didn't seem to think so? Lily nodded--a sign that transcended species--and then set to work on her own message.

She scratched out a wobbly 'M' in the dirt first, representing the rogue were they'd shoved through the portal, and then lifted a paw, to show she was about to act a scene. Hefting herself up onto her two back legs, she began to growl and swipe as she wobbled about, trying her best to represent the rage the boy had been in. Her balance was only momentary, and she fell to the ground with a huff, looking at Eve with expectant eyes. But where is Michael?

Eve stood back up and watched, noting the M for Micheal and the reenactment of his violence he'd only seen the tail end of. It seemed like Lily was worried about him, and for a moment she allowed herself to take a break from the grief to feel proud -- she was showing herself to be a caring person, and that was the only thing Eve could ever ask for in family.

They didn't know where he had ran off to, which was worrisome. And also beyond their control. In response the fox let the worry creep back into her features, and she stepped forward to press her forehead affectionately against the fisher's again. I don't know. But we can't do much for him now, so you need to focus on yourself.

And getting back to the world they were used to. Not that she had any idea how. Neither of them had Lady or the Prideful One's ability to yank the veil out from under them.

Digging at the mud again, Eve drew a P this time, barking again and signing PRIDE with a paw twisting upwards past her breastbone and an expression mimicking the golden stag's haughty sternness. Maybe they could find it, and have a way home while also learning in truth whether or not they had done the right thing.

Faced with another nose boop, Lily squeaked softly, but otherwise made no attempt to stop Eve's affections. It was bad enough that their communication was stunted, and the fisher was all too willing to accept whatever solace she could get, especially in the form of fox boops.

She watched with studious eyes as Eve made the letter P, but missed whatever signal she had been trying to make with her paw. The expression on the fox's face, however, was far more telling, and Lily found herself reminded of a certain stag's dour expression. The Prideful One...but would he really be interested in speaking with them now that their mission was done, or failed?

It was worth a shot, at least. Lily bounded over to a nearby table, digging her claws into the wood as she wiggled her way up to the ground. From her vantage point she saw nothing of gilded antlers or shining baubles, but she would not be deterred. The fisher filled her lungs with air and let out a high screech, listening to it echo across the open concourse with a satisfied nod. It was an unnerving sound up close and personal--from a distance, it might have even been mistaken for human screams.

That scream cut through the air with clean purpose, as well as a human-like tone that made Eve's fur prickle down her back in spite of herself. It was a truly unnerving sound. She also thought of how the Prideful One had understood her improvised gesture -- perhaps the intent to communicate was what mattered to such an entity. Maybe it would understand Lily, too.

And hopefully something else wouldn't hear.

"Don't turn around," someone said. "My dear girl, you really must be more careful who you call."

An acrid, burning smell--like overcooked pork loin--invaded the were-women's nostrils. "But you're lucky. I mean you no harm, as long as you. Leave."

A portal opened before them. On the other side was Ashdown.

Lily's fur bristled and her tail stood on end, but she was obedient, facing forward while the scent of burning assaulted her nose. She saw the different lighting from the other side of the portal and wasted no time, leaping from the table with a clatter of paws.

She tumbled through to Ashdown, focused only on her breathing as her body reshaped itself for the fourth time that night, becoming a girl once again. Panic struck her as she thought of Eve, and she lifted herself to sitting to glance back at the portal for sight of the fox-woman--but notably, she averted her eyes from the direction the voice had come. Whatever that was, it was way beyond her supernatural pay-grade.

The voice and smell instantly overwhelmed the fox Eve's more sensitive nose and ears, causing her to bristle and shiver at the sickening near-intimacy of the being's words towards Lily before following up with a curt instruction. It was not a request. It wasn't really even a demand, she felt. It was a simple fact with an underpinning of searing anger to emphasize it. But whoever it was had also provided a way back out, and that warranted whatever politeness could be given. She did not turn, but tilted her head just enough to render visible the edge of her chin, and signed a quick THANK YOU before following Lily through the rip in the air before them.

Back to having a voice, and hands. Eve would pull the girl in for a full-bodied hug not a moment later.

Lily collapsed into Eve's arms, the weight of everything they'd just seen and done hitting her at once in the absence of adrenaline and the startling need to just survive. Her body shook in fear, in horror, but there was a vacuum in her chest that kept her from sobbing out.

"...w-we ******** up, didn't we?" They had shunned Lucas, they had put all of those people through the portal into another world with that burning voice, and for what?

"Oh, sweetheart..." Eve's voice was unsteady, and quiet, given as a guilty murmur as she pulled Lily in closer, smoothing her hair. "I think we did... I'm so sorry."
