Destiny City Memorial was a bit of a trip from where Slievenamon bore witness to the young man getting his starseed stolen. Despite not knowing his name, age, or even residence, she at least knew his face, so the squire relied heavily on that to return the very essence of his life. She got in the back way, well, the top way would be more exact; busting the lock on the roof's stairwell door and entering after powering down. It wasn't a thoroughly thought out plot, considering Shelley was still reeling from having to take a life herself, but it was better than nothing.
And then began the long, arduous task of searching for the victim. A bit of snooping turned up the hospital rooms where several people were on life support for a variety of "accidents." A horrifically common theme in Destiny City, unfortunately. As Shelley walked the halls, glancing into rooms for the male's familiar face, she hesitated somewhat upon seeing it. Not on the victim, but what looked to be a relative? The girl tilted her head and approached the woman.
"E-excuse me," she said as gently as possible. "I don't mean to intrude, but, your son..." She pointed to the room she likely stood outside of. "Is he in there?"
mewrose Please ignore the awful way she got in, haha. Otherwise, I hope this is okay of a start!

Diana Jones was having a surreal night. Everything had been perfectly normal until she'd sent her son out to the store. Instead of coming home, she got a phone call from the police saying there'd been some kind of monster attack and her son had collapsed. Worse still, there was nothing obviously wrong with him, but he wouldn't wake up or respond in any way. She rushed right over to the hospital, and had been lead to a room to wait. He wasn't in there yet, so she opted to wait outside for him to be brought in. She stared down the hall waiting, earnestly waiting for a sign of him, wondering numbly what could have happened. But before he was brought to her, someone came up and spoke to her. Diana didn't think the young woman looked like hospital staff, but she was too dazed to question her presence much. "No, he's not here yet," she answered. "The nurse said they're still running some tests. Have you heard any news?" she asked, a bit desperately. With so little information, she would grasp at any straw that presented itself.

Shelley was unsure how honest she should be. Would being blunt and saying she was there as a direct eyewitness of the preceding be too much at the moment? The sixteen year old chewed her bottom lip in uncertainty. She would hold back for now.
Shaking her head, Shelley said, "I-I saw what happened, but I can't really make heads or tails what happened... The explanation given was... vague." She locked her arms behind her back and leaned against the nearby wall. "I'm sorry I can't be of much help. It shook me up to see that take place." The tremble she made wasn't an act. "I hope he is all right."

Diana sagged slightly against the wall as her faint hope was lost. "Oh..." she said quietly, turning over the young woman's words. There was no news in it, not really. But maybe this woman knew something that could give her an idea of what was happening. "You...saw what happened?" she asked. "Can you tell me what you saw, please? Even if it doesn't make any sense, it's more information than I have now. They said nothing seems to be wrong with him, but he won't wake up." Her voice turned pleading at the end. She wanted her baby boy to be well again, but anything that helped her make sense of the situation would be appreciated.

"There was this, like, monster thing... It was rampaging around and wrecking havoc..."
A youma, actually. I really should have interfered there. Really.
"And then there was this guy. It's like he followed the monster in. He was dressed really weirdly, like a costume or something. During the running and screaming caused by the monster, he looked like he snatched something from your son." Shelley combed a stray lock behind her hair. "Or maybe he sprayed something on him? I-I'm not quite sure, but whatever he did caused him to collapse. That's about all I know, ma'am."
And to think I have his starseed right in my pocket is, well, it's unnerving. Makes me feel like I am also to blame for his current state.
Shelley cast the woman a sorrowful look. She wanted so badly to lay out everything to her and ease her worries and, in a way, she also felt jealous. Without a mother herself, Shelley could only bear witness to the concerns of one for her child, never experience it herself.
"I'm sorry I can't be of much help, b-but I hope he wakes up soon. Actually, I am positive he will. Just hold out hope."

Diana listened, her brow furrowed as she tried to figure out what had happened. The monster, though strange to think about, was actually believable. There had been various reports of such things for a while now. But the bit with the strangely-dressed man was harder to understand. What could he have done that could cause her son to fall unconscious without leaving any trace? "Thank you. I'll try," she started to answer, but froze when she heard the clatter of a gurney rolling down the hallway. She spun around to see, and found two nurses where pushing the bed down the hall. Between the distance and the oxygen mask, it was hard to make out the face of the bed's occupant, but her son's bright orange hair was unmistakable. She rushed towards them, desperately asking for information, and was told quietly that they'd explain what they'd found once he was settled. As they turned into the room, one of the nurses glanced at Shelley, then back at Diana. "Is she a relative?" the nurse asked, and was met with a shake of the head. To Shelley the nurse said, "You'll have to go now. Only immediate family is allowed for the moment. You can check with the receptionist later to find if we allow visitors for this patient." Then they all entered the room and closed the door.

At first, Shelley opened her mouth to protest. She felt she had every right to see the victim's body considering she was also in possession of his starseed, but she quietly relented, mentally rebuked herself for her selfish thoughts, and backpedaled a step.
"Right, yes, I'll come back later," she said, mustering up a smile. A very forced one at that. "Goodbye, ma'am. I hope your son makes it through this."
Then she summoned her shell flute upon exiting the hospital and hustled home; entering through her window to avoid the eyes of her parents. Before she powered down to hit the hay, she glanced at her weapon and sighed.
"This is really take a toll on me," she said, flopping onto her bed. "How many days has it been? Six? Six days since I've gone to school?" Suddenly, a flash of light overcame her body and her squire uniform and flute returned from whence they came. "Sheesh."
A few more days would be tacked onto Shelley absence from Meadowview as she kept vigil over the city during her daytime patrols. Eventually, it came time when she felt it was right to finish what she started, and she returned to the hospital. After a short explanation to the receptionist, she was pointed in the direction she had left before. As she walked the halls, her hand remained pinned to her pocket and the starseed within.
mewrose Oh god, sorry for the wait! For some reason I didn't get a quote notification for this? That, or I clicked it and didn't get to see what it was to. Ugh. Anyway, yes, time skip done~

During the past few days, there had been a lot of activity in Sean's room, but very little change. Family and friends visited frequently, spending long hours sitting and talking with him, hoping to see some sign of life from him. His little foster sister left her favorite plush cat with him, hoping that would help him get better. Doctors came in and out and, at his mother's insistence, wheeled him all over the hospital to try every test imaginable. They were not surprised when everything they tried showed nothing wrong. There were an increasing number of cases like this, where someone collapsed for no apparent reason and died soon after. It was very rare for such patients to recover, and they were trying to gently break it to Mrs. Jones that if there was no change soon, her son may not wake up. When Shelley returned, Sean happened to be alone in his room. He lay pale and motionless on his bed, numerous wires and tubes hooking him up to various life support machines. Only the faint, unsteady rise and fall of his chest showed he was still alive, and only barely. His vital signs were steadily dropping, and if it weren't for the machines he would have surely been gone already. The empty shell that had housed Sean Jones did not think, dream, perceive anything around him or react to any stimulus. It could only wait, without even the capacity to hope that what had been stolen would be returned. Even with the missing starseed so close, there was nothing the body could do to recover it. Unoderi No worries, it happens sometimes! Stupid Gaia and it's glitchy notifications.

It was a similar sight the girl had taken in many times, but nonetheless, Shelley always had to stop and simply take in how a body simply withered without its starseed. It was an awful, heartbreaking sight. Too many had lost their lives this way, whether it was to the hands of Chaos or those morally grey members of Order not giving a damn about what they did to others.
Swallowing back her own disgust at these thoughts, Shelley dug into her pocket, and withdrew the starseed. It seemed to flicker, possibly due to fading from the absence of its body or because it sensed it, she was not sure. Approaching Sean's bedside, she extended her hand and pressed the crystal to his chest. It sank into the hollow where his heart would be and then, stepping back, the girl gave a small smile.
"Well, another good job, Shelley" she said, glancing over to the machinery to see if they would respond. "You've been without that for a while now and I'm sure your mom's worried sick. Get well soon, okay?"
She then left the room, a notable hop in her step. Good deeds felt... good. She should do them more often.
mewrose Another time skip, maybe? Shelley would come back to check on him and just ask if he remembers anything about the incident that caused him to lose his starseed.

Once Sean's starseed was back where it belonged, she showed a small but immediate improvement. His breathing eased, his heartbeat steadied, and his face began to take on a bit more color. He was still pale and would be unconscious for a little while yet, but by the time his mother came to visit him a couple hours later, his fingers actually twitched when she put her hand on his. The doctors were baffled by the boy's recovery. They had no idea what had caused the coma, and therefore had less idea what caused him to recover. By the time he woke up the following day, they'd pretty much decided it was a mystery and left it at that. They did want him to remain in the hospital for a day or two more though, just to observe him and make sure he was truly recovered. When none of his family was around, one of the nurses quietly confided to him that it was frankly a miracle he'd woken up, then refused to say more. Sean was happy to stay in the hospital as long as the doctors thought was necessary. He was sure they knew best. Also he was still feeling weak and dizzy, though both conditions were beginning to abate. So he remained in bed, quietly reading the books his mom brought him, watching TV or chatting with any friends or family who'd come to visit. Unoderi Another timeskip sounds good!

Slievenamon let out a sigh. She'd been unable to sleep the past few days, the guilt of taking that Negaverse lieutenant's life eating away at her sensibilities. All of the justifications in the world, even selfish ones, couldn't tie up loose ends. Her daytime patrols were done mostly in a daze, much to her chagrin.
Deciding it might cheer her up, and also because she had some questions for him, she decided to pay the male whose starseed she returned a visit. Making her way to the hospital, she entered under her civilian guise, and then made her way to Sean's room. Though she was deadbeat tired, when she saw that he was upright, she felt lax.
Good, good, it seems what I've done paid off.
Opening his room door gently, Shelley poked her head in, and then her whole body. Holding back a yawn with a small smile, she gave a wave, and said, "Hey, hi there. You probably don't know me, well, I guess you don't... Y'know, lemme just introduce myself. My name's Shelley Nickson and I was there when, um, you were attacked. It really caught me off guard, since I'd only heard about it on the news. So just to, like, sate my curiosity, would you mind answering a few questions? If you're up for it, I mean, considering you just came out of a coma, right?"

Sean was flipping channels on the TV when he heard his door open. He looked over, fully expecting it to be either a nurse or his mom, who still stopped by several times a day. He was surprised to see it wasn't anyone he knew, but he smiled at her anyway. "Hi Shelley," he responded. "I'm Sean. I'm not sure if you knew that already.And...attacked?" He looked puzzled at that. The events just prior to his collapse were a but rushed an chaotic, but he didn't remember being attacked. "That's actually news to me. Did the monster get me?" His face scrunched in thought as he tried to remember. "I don't remember it getting near me though, just trying to run, then sudden pain, and then I guess I passed out." He supposed the pain might have been from some kind of attack, but wouldn't the doctors have seen some sign of it? He shook his head and looked back up at her. "But I'll answer any questions I can."

Shelley's mouth drew to a small O. Seeing as what she thought would be small talk might soon turn into a lengthy interview, she pulled up a chair, and nodded her head as she took a seat.
"I guess they didn't tell you, huh?" This made her frown. Were even the doctors keeping things hush-hush about those who collapsed? Shaking her head, she said, "No... Well, there wasn't a monster, but I don't think it was the one who did this to you."
Her face and tone grew serious. Had she not been fatigued, her friendly facade might have held itself, but her knightly sense of justice was shining through then. She did hold herself back from explaining the hard details, though.
"There was a man also there. In a weird getup. It seemed as if... he were trailing after the monster. Using it as a decoy and attacking during the ensuing chaos. But before that, could I ask what you were doing there? You weren't persuaded by anyone to go, were you?"

Sean blinked owlishly at Shelley's question a few times. The question made little sense; he hadn't been anywhere strange, so he didn't understand the apparent urgency of the question. The heart monitor he was still hooked up to began to beep slightly faster, reflecting how startled he felt. "Why was I there? It was a grocery store. I was shopping. My mom had asked me to pick up a couple things," he answered. Then he turned her last few sentences over in his head again. A man in weird getup? His brow furrowed as that thought triggered a memory. "But now that you mention it, there was someone in a strange outfit. It looked like some kind of uniform, so I thought he might be some form of military officer. But maybe not?" He looked at her quizzically for confirmation. "He started to lead me away from the monster, down one of the isles. And then there was pain, and then nothing."

The sudden spike of Sean's heartbeat indicated by the monitor seemed to send a jolt through Shelley as well. She rubbed her temple testily, mentally rebuking herself again.
Come on, Shelley, keep it together, she told herself. He's not the enemy nor the source of your frustrations. He just came out of a coma for frick's sake!
She tried to look friendly, smiling, but one could tell it was a tired one. "S-sorry about that," she said. "Didn't mean to make you panic or anything. There's just been a lot of danger around and I'm... I'm worried, that's all. I know it seems like a lot to shoulder since I'm probably around the same age as you, but I want to keep my family and friends safe." It was a veiled lie, but regardless, she continued.
"A military officer, huh... I wouldn't say it is out of place, but if he led you away from the monster, but then you collapsed... I am sure he is to blame." She glanced down at her hands when she said this, flexing them to hide a tremble. "I'm sure they're the dangerous ones."
I guess I'll have to take patrols in that part of town seriously. There hasn't been anything yet, but it may escalate. As if I don't have enough on my plate already, ughhh...
mewrose Btw, they should totally battle each other if you're up for it. o/
