Rookeries If you have any suggestions or changes you want me to make, I'm willing to edit! The morning had started out so calm for Ethiriel. After lunch, the group of kids, the guides and the rest of the group had gone out for a nice hike in the pleasant air of the camping grounds. It certainly had helped the Frei clear her head, enjoying the atmosphere – like Henry had said, this would be good for her, and the longer she stayed at Fort Richmond with Candice and the others, the more at peace she felt. Maybe this was what she needed, after all.
Ethiriel had spent the entire hike talking with Candice; about the air, the children, their lives and the children among them. Hyunae was still a bit of a sore point despite Ethiriel coming to terms and understanding the girl's frustrations, but she hoped to get a moment alone with her as soon as possible – that is, if she'd let her. Hyunae seemed to avoid the Frei as much as humanly possible during the trip, sticking close to her friends and finding any way to get away from Ethiriel. It hurt, but the Raevan understood and all she wanted to do was make it right. Would an opportunity arise? She certainly hoped so.
With her arm tucked in Candice's, Ethiriel took a deep breath as they approached the cabins once more. The day was falling and soon it would be dark out.
”Is there anything else we are doing tonight?” Ethiriel asked as she tried to pinpoint Hyunae once more. They had three days, now two, to talk through their issues and, admittedly, the Frei was getting impatient. She didn't like the idea of the girl disliking her, at least without discussion, and she wanted to talk to her as soon as possible.
Whether that discussion would happen tonight was another story.

They had some lucky weather going out to Fort Richmond this season, and Candice was glad for it. The day only grew more beautiful after the morning hours fell into afternoon, and the kids were as hyper as could be to show their enthusiasm. It didn't make the supervising any easier, but Candice and the rest of the staff were glad for it; the hours flew by with their hike and every plant discovered, nook rested in, and tree climbed. By the time they returned to the cabins, Candice was aching to sit down, but she was happy.
With all the glumness that loomed over her trip to Maine and her return thereafter, the change in atmosphere was a relief.
"Hm?" Candice turned her head toward Ethiriel as they returned hand-in-hand to the campsite, smiling easily and more lazily than she had in a long time. "Oh, just dinner, but after that we're sending everyone off to bed," Candice replied, humming; given how relaxed she felt, Candice felt no need to ask why Ethiriel wanted to know. The brunette began their path toward the cafeteria, where warm lights and the smell of baked pasta trickled through the open windows. Only a few of the supervisors and students were heading the same direction as them.
"We do have some time to spare before that, though. Just to run around and explore the cabins," Candice let out a soft yawn into her sleeve, "But I figure we can just head into the cafeteria now... unless you'd like to walk around?"

Dinner. That actually sounded quite wonderful; Ethiriel didn't realize how hungry she had gotten -- she wasn't used to exertions anymore and while she had no legs to walk on, the Frei had become quite hungry. She hadn't used any of the silver given to her for food as they were meant to be left as a guide and now wondered what was prepared for her, as well.
"I was just wondering if I could speak with Hyunae. I'd like to clear things up as soon as possible."
She did also like the idea of walking around and getting used to the place -- especially a tour of the cabin, since she'd have to spend some time there and without vision, it would be a little more difficult moving around. Ethiriel wanted a meal first; staving off the hunger was something she had become used to doing without nourishment in her state of depression, but now that she was actually doing more, it was harder to ignore.
"Though it can wait until a more opportune time, if need be."

It wasn't that Candice had forgotten about Hyunae, but she’d certainly let all the troubles that fell between her and Ethiriel slip her mind for a little while. She stared past the cafeteria at the rest of the campgrounds with a pensive frown; of all the students and supervisors scattered around nearby, none of them were Hyunae.
"We might see Hyunae in the cafeteria, during dinner,” Candice replied, ”Let’s give her some time before we talk to her to explore some. How does that sound?”

"Right... Yes, that sounds fine," Ethiriel replied, her voice soft and deflated. Perhaps, even if given the right amount of time, Hyunae herself would approach to discuss these things. She didn't have much faith in that idea, but one could always fantasize.
Exploring sounded like a good idea for the Frei as well; she didn't know the cabin or area, but most likely she would be escorted wherever she went. At least, that's what Ethiriel figured. After all, she had been attached to Candice's arm practically all day.
"How much longer until dinner?" she asked, attempting to change the subject despite how heavily the other weighed on her mind.

Candice grimaced given Ethiriel's faltering expression, but didn't hesitate to check her phone when asked about the time. "Just twenty more minutes," she replied, "What do you feel like doing before then?"

There was a brief pause for thought as Ethiriel mulled over Candice's question. She had left her books and audio books at home in favor of spending time with her guardian's significant other and the children, and she had no hand-related hobbies to busy herself with. What was there for her to do other than try to make up with Hyunae?
"Perhaps we could just... wander." she suggested, unable to think of a better pastime. "To work on our hunger. It's still such a lovely day, too. Or we could explore the cabin. I'm... not used to being in completely new places."

Candice kept her eyes trained on Ethiriel as she spoke, worry refusing to leave her. “Wandering,” she echoed, breathing in some of the outside air, “That sounds like a plan. We could even start with the cabins.”
It was a matter of keeping Hyunae and Ethiriel separate from one another, at least until the time was right. Unfortunately, exploring the cabins was somewhat of a gamble; all of the girls in the group were in the same building for the weekend, and there was no telling where Hyunae was off exploring. It made Candice feel a bit at unease, but she only needed to be observant and prepared.
“It’s not completely new,” Candice replied, “It’s all very similar to the other campsite we went to. Remember the one closer to Fairview?”

The idea of bumping into Hyunae was on Ethiriel's mind as well; it was't her intention to confront her just yet, but the Frei wasn't sure if she would be able to resist if they met up again. The little girl needed time with her friends before jumping into such a serious discussion -- especially if she was angry, still.
"Is it?" Ethiriel asked, offering her arm to Candice. She allowed herself to smile; while she didn't know the worry painted on the counselor's face, the Raevan wanted to help lighten the mood. "That's a bit of a relief... Though, I guess it's a good thing that I've no need to find a restroom in the middle of the night."
That was an attempt at a joke.
Smile still in place, Ethiriel continued, "Given the choice, I do believe I would like to be outside for just a little bit longer. It's too lovely a day not to."

Candice laughed at Ethiriel's attempted joke; it was a bit lost on her, but amused her anyway. "Well, I guess not! I never really thought about it, but you really don't have to go to the bathroom at all, do you?" she asked, smiling.
By the time Ethiriel made her request, they were already fairly close to the girl's cabins - but Candice was eager to please. "Oh, of course. There are a few break areas near the forest, too, maybe we can see those?"
Unfortunately for them, before Candice could face them away from the direction of the cabins, a group of girls - among them Hyunae - came flooding out from the entrance, laughing and running off without thinking. A few came awfully close to bumping against Ethiriel's shoulder, and when Ivy finally did, she stopped her mid-sprint toward the cafeteria to glance back.
"Oh, sorry Ethiriel, sorry Miss Wallace," Ivy said, waving as she left; Hyunae, who was trailing behind her, froze.
"It's okay, Ivy, but - hey, girls, don't run too fast!" Candice called out; she glanced back at Hyunae, who remained quiet and placid near the two women. Smiling carefully, Candice thought it best not to ignore the girl despite their troubles. "Hi, Hyunae," she said. "Are you heading to out for dinner?"
"Uh, yeah," Hyunae replied plainly, sidestepping the two women, her cane hidden behind her back. She didn't know why her feet didn't move, then, to catch up to the other girls; she found herself waiting from some reply from Ethiriel instead, though none came yet. "...Hi, I guess."

The woman's laugh eased Ethiriel's spirits, her shoulders relaxing. She shook her head rather than giving an audible response -- if it hadn't been for the laugh, the Frei would have thought her joke was glazed over; it's not like they were her strong suit, but at least it got across.
As she was bumped, Ethiriel's free hand rose to meet Candice's arm, but was shortly released again as Ivy gave apologies.
"It's okay, Ivy. Just keep an eye on where you're going," Ethiriel said with a gentle smile. She waved in the girl's direction as she took off, but froze just as stiffly as Hyunae when she was brought into attention. "Dinner sounds wonderful--" the Raevan stammered, trying to keep her smile as strong as possible. Why was she so nervous? "Hello, Hyunae. Are you enjoying the trip?"

Hyunae’s shoulders stiffened at the sound of Ethiriel’s voice, though some part of her still wanted to hear it. The awkwardness that fell from the Frei’s lips stirred her into cringing, but with a blase shrug, she tapped her cane idly against the dirt, eager to move on. “Yeah,” she replied plainly, and Candice stared for a moment to see if the girl would say anything else; when nothing else came, it was time to chime in.
“Well, we’ll see you in the cafeteria soon,” Candice piped in, smiling; “Everything smells so good already.”
“I can’t really smell it,” Hyunae said, plainly, her feet slowly guiding her to the direction of the cafeteria, where scents of garlic and bread were wafting gently from the building’s chimney tops. “Can I go now?” she asked, adjusting the backpack around her shoulders.

The silence in the air tore at Ethiriel's rune, a pit growing where her stomach would be. It was obvious, even without sight, that Hyunae was uncomfortable. The young girl's short response to Candice made Ethiriel's brows knit together and she let out a small sigh.
As she was about to agree with the counselor, Hyunae's almost negative response put Ethiriel on edge. The Raevan did have to figure that humans couldn't quite catch scents as well as she could, but the girl's response was dismissive -- and then, she voiced her want to leave. Another sigh escaped the Frei as he heart pumped faster.
"Y-yes. You may," Ethiriel said, her voice purposefully light and pleasant. Her grip on Candice's arm tightened a tad as she nodded -- more for the counselor as she was the only one could see -- and she paid extra attention for Hyunae's retreating footfalls. Shoulders slumping in defeat, Ethiriel closed her eyes and hung her head.

As luck would have it, everything Candice hoped wouldn’t happen unveiled in front of her in perfect little motions. Whatever small part of her still denied the fact that some rift between Hyunae and Ethiriel existed at all vanished to the wind, and she couldn’t help but stare wide-eyed between the two girls in front of her in shock. The hurt lingering on Ethiriel’s expression made her own fall, but she steeled through it, nodding in agreement to Ethiriel’s reply.
“Yeah, you go on ahead,” Candice encouraged, smiling. Without another word, Hyunae took her last few steps backward before turning around and running full-tilt to the cafeteria, calling out to her friends with a cheerful tone as if nothing had happened. Shoulders slumping, Candice placed a gentle hand on Ethiriel’s arm.
“I’m sorry, Eth...” Candice said; slowly, she began guiding the Frei away from the cabins, back on their intended route around the woods of the campsite.
