I will stay right here
Chris' office was known to all his students, and even some who didn't have his class. Back of a hallway, round a corner, basically invisible unless you were looking for it or stumbled upon it.
He was in it, typing an email while also absentmindedly chewing on the end of a pen. He didn't have a clue of the time, just of the silence.

He had noticed from Shiloh's papers (or the ones he turned in) that he seemed to really like turtles. He couldn't always give the art back, as nice as it was, but he would try to give something back.
On the next quiz handed back, carefully hidden on the second page so no other students would notice, there was a small turtle sticker by a question Shiloh had gotten correct.

Every desk in the room had a basket under the chair, and Shiloh had a bad habit of resting his feet on the one in front of him. Today was no exception.
At least he'd been showing up to class. Why? No reason. Not a single one. When his quiz was handed back, Shiloh turned his nose up at the score (74, still passing, good enough)... but he'd caught that glimpse of color on the second page. No one was looking, so he inspected it rather quick.
Hope springs eternal, Shiloh was attentive the rest of the lecture, and his feet remained planted on the floor.

TradeIf Chris noticed, he didn't comment. But things handed back to Shiloh always had a covert turtle on there somewhere from then on.
Chris recently managed to give back some art even. It had been on a test, which he wasn't able to give back really for one reason or another (school boards continued to baffle Chris) but he was giving back scores and scantrons and the art was there.

He didn't have to comment. It's an unspoken deal. The steady stream of stickers did well to hold Shiloh's attention, and he gave it out in due return. A test comes back, and it says 78. It's the highest one yet.
When Shiloh started to receive his art back as well, it came as a pleasant surprise. Chris, maybe, wasn't so bad.
On his next test, he drew a turtle at the end eating a lofty little daisy. Scribbled down next to it was the words "keep it"

The turtle he draws for him goes up on a small piece of paper within the mass of sticky notes and other notifications on his office wall. It's a little hidden but there and Chris smiles every time he sees it.
The next quiz, on a wrong question Chris has drawn his own turtle. It's not done well, but it's done in green ink at least, and the correct answer is penned next to it in his neat if slightly angular writing.

Shiloh doesn't need to see it. He knows Mr. Watts probably kept it. Why? Because Mr. Watts seemed like a sap for that sort of thing, and he was sure it was part of that aforementioned silent agreement.
He frowned at the wrong answer, but the turtle immediately perked him up. His response isn't very neat, because he only has a couple minutes before their homework gets collected, but he hastily drew another turtle on the back.
Shiloh Wrote - p.s you got the shape wrong. its like this. - p.p.s thnks for the right answer For all the "silent agreement" was worth, it was the first relevant communication shared between them.

On the return of the homework, a couple days later (Chris was a ridiculously fast grader), there was a turtle drawn to Shiloh's specifications. It was still a little shaky, still a little wrong, but it was there and with a note.
Chris wrote are there differences between all the turtles?
There is a neat little 88 on the top of the homework.

Still a little wrong? More like very.
A difference between all the turtles? The pen in his hand was clenched so tight, his knuckles were white.
The 88 at the top of the page made it drop to the desk with a sound. Someone might have looked, someone might not have.
Shiloh Are you kidding? wed be here all day. use google It was the highest grade he's had yet.

Well, Chris' question had been vague as hell. He only had himself to blame for that. There's a reply given back regardless though.
Chris I meant the ones you draw, or should I still use google?
Still, his mouth curves up in a smile as he sees the uptick in grades for Shiloh. He was going to pass his class, that was for sure.

Damn right he was going to pass. It was a challenge now, even if this weird homework note tag was kind of weird. Passing notes with a teacher was weird. Then again, Chris was barely a teacher.

Shiloh tbh not really with the ones i draw. theyre just whatever. should still google. love the little guys

Should he have been passing notes with his students? Not really. But he was going to do it anyways because Shiloh was interesting and well, he was a senior in high school.
Chris they look good regardless. i will though, your report was informative but i do need more info.
Admittedly, he had become more interested in turtles thanks to Shiloh. Fish too, because of Jamie.

Shiloh so r you saying you want another re bport. cause it isnt happening. Shiloh looked down at the paper, and then back up at Chris across the classroom. True, he'd be graduating soon enough. And anyway, this sort of made Chris seem less like an authoritative figure and more like... well, not a friend... it was hard to place.
Anyway.
The next day, he turns in an the entire Wikipedia page on red-eared sliders, printed out on white paper with his homework.

Chris was almost going to miss the notes when Shiloh graduated. They certainly kept his class interesting and he was making.. well. It wasn't friendship. Acquaintanceship?
Chris No, I don't. As much as I like to learn about turtles, I have enough to grade currently.
The wikipedia page on the turtles though is a pleasant surprise and he grins with delight.

Shiloh starts to write his response down, before he realizes that it's sort of pointless to keep trading notes. Sure, it was a secret route of communication with his teacher, but the only real incentive he had to show for was turning his work in. At this point, he'd turn it in with or without the guarantee of a note in return.
"Actually, I kinda like snapping turtles the best." he says from his desk. All the other students had left when the ball rang, but he stayed, expression a little awkward and wary but...
He was trying, maybe.
