the first time at equinox

"Can't believe that I missed you opening this place, Eve," Jeremiah spoke as he was looking around. The store smelled wonderful and it was relaxing. It even reminded him, oddly enough, of being back in England.

"Then again," there was that familiar wry smile, "with everything that's been going on lately it's not really a surprise that I did." The missing teens and then what happened in the forest in other ashdown ...

Things had been a bit hectic.

not quite first time at equinox

"You'd think a tea shop would be on your radar Jeremiah.." Algie chuckled, following the detective into the shop. It wasn't like Jeremiah had much time to shop with work and everything else, the two of them not even having had time to go out together in months aside from their weekend football matches at Darlene's.

"Hullo Eve.." Eve was given a wave of the hand and a smile, the knowledge of one another still in the realm of casual and pleasant acquaintance. The last purchase he'd made was well and gone at this point and it was time to restock.

the first time at equinox

Eve waved the two in happily, with obviously no hard feelings about Jeremiah's delay in making it to her small store. "Good to see you both. Care to try something new today? I know you like sticking to your English classics, but Kenyan tea is a lifesaver on a rough day."

prophecy

"Hey, Mercer?" said a haggard and subdued Leila one afternoon at the police department. She'd taken a few sick days after they'd returned from their nightmare with Autumn in Other Ashdown, but her return made the offices no less quiet -- normally her presence meant a steady stream of brightness and laughter as she consulted people or chatted with them in the hallway. Now she was looking at the detective with a curious squint, as if the eye contact was triggering the onset of a migraine.

"So... when you jump... you're going to want to jump again, right after that, even though there isn't a foothold."

It was a shaky sequence of still images, burned into her mind's eye, that wouldn't leave until she described them to him. The same thing had happened earlier in the morning, just do the far left side, all the way down, with an officer who had a known habit of buying scratch cards.

first time at equinox

"With everything that's been going on?" Jeremiah just gave Algie a look but there was a smile tugging on his lips all the same. They ribbed each other far too much.

Eve was given a pleasant smile. "I'll try anything once." At least when it came to tea. "So if you've got something you think I might like ..." She had known Jeremiah enough to have some idea of his preferences for tea, so he did not doubt for a second that she'd be able to come up with something. "Especially if it's a lifesaver on a rough day." That had him giving her a wry amused look.

prophecy

Jeremiah had likewise taken a couple sick days. It had taken longer than he liked to admit to warm back up properly and longer still for the pain to fade back down to levels where he could work without wanting to ...

Not going to think about it.

"Afternoon, Townhome, have a seat." Business as usual, otherwise it would have been Leila. He raised his eyes up from his desk and withheld the frown he wanted to let show. She looked like felt inwardly. Yet the information ...

"I'm going to want to do what?" He could not have heard her right but ... what? "Is that even possible?"

"Hell if I know." Leila squinted her eyes shut and pinched the bridge of her nose momentarily, then crossed her arms back over her chest. "Sorry. It's my new thing, and if I don't speak up I get a headache. You know how it goes." That was code for this is some kind of magic bullshit, said in a way that wouldn't give much pause if some of it was overheard.

first time at equinox

"You get the Kenyan-" Algie was always resistant to change, no matter how much he trusted Eve's judgement, "I'll get the normal haul. It's all going to the same place anyway."

It hadn't been announced that they were living together now but both seemed to be easing into the sharing of that information with friends and relatives very slowly.

prophecy

Jeremiah's lips pressed to a thin line. "I'm not sure I like the sound of it." Was she seeing the future? Where the hell would he have to ... It sounded absolutely ridiculous.

He rubbed fingers across his forehead briefly. "I'm well aware. At least your headache should fade now?" The detective lieutenant leaned back in his chair. The level of magic bullshit going around ...

It was contagious at this point.

prophecy

"Yeah, it's already clearing up. Thanks for humoring me." Leila sighed with some relief, resting on hand at the desk while reaching down with the other to retrieve something she'd placed on the floor. "That's not why I stopped in, though, believe it or not. Remember how I was kind of a pushy a*****e a while back? I never got around to properly apologizing... so Eve and I got you a little something."

She produced a deep purple gift bag, which had a tea set for two -- a nicely sized teapot along with a pair of matching cups -- as well as a small jar of clementine marmalade. "Yeah, so, sorry for forgetting my boundaries back then. This is also to commemorate your new living arrangement, by the way."

Oh yes, they'd noticed the rings. Of course they had.

spelling it out

"Ohhh. So, Green Lantern rules then."

Leila hadn't gone out of her way to learn much magic, but the ordeal at the mansion had been a traumatic indicator she was better off taking what time she could to get acquainted with it -- especially with the troubling news she'd picked up from Eve through her grapevine of therianthropes. Jeremiah was kind enough to run her through the basic rules of it.

She stared at the ground for a moment, not outwardly seeming to be trying to conjure up anything. Then her feet abruptly sank into the ground a few inches, and spots of soil in her line of sight crumbled and erupted with maggots, and carrion beetles, and other crawling things. She had an apple core she'd been idly chewing on while they'd talked, which she tossed to the ground, where it was devoured in seconds.

prophecy (with gifts)

Jeremiah blinked and Leila was treated to a brief pleasantly surprised look on his face before it flickered away into something more appropriate for work. The detective lieutenant had an image to maintain and all.

"To be fair, there was a lot going on that I couldn't talk about that you're now are of ..." He waved a hand to show that it was water under the bridge. Jeremiah was leaning forward to take the purple gift bag and opened it up.

Leila Townhome was further treated to a rare sight: the silver-haired man's cheeks turning the faintest bit ruddy red. It was faint and faded but it had been there as he carefully handled the present.

"Ah," he started and then smiled - a bit stupidly, happily - at her. "No apologies needed and I like the gift. I'm sure Alg will too." Jeremiah looked towards her and that smile was still there. "Thank you, Leila." Not Townhome, not at this moment. There was a distinction.

spelling it out

Jeremiah just raised an eyebrow at her, somehow ... not surprised. This was Leila, after all.

"You've got the hang of it, obviously, even if ..." His lips twitched in amusement. "Might have a better flair for the dramatic magic usage than me. It is impressive." The detective honestly meant it as well. He was making sure to take a step back not to step on anything or otherwise harm them.

"Just make sure to keep at it. Like anything else we've got to practice at it to strengthen the muscles or we'll wear ourselves out. I ended up feeling like I ran a marathon after my first real attempt at doing magic." Not the case now, but then? Definitely. Jeremiah was crouched to the ground and watching the crawling things.

He would not say it but this was really damn cool.

the hand-off (not to be confused with the foot-off *bricked*)

Jeremiah had come prepared with something that would be able to carry Heliodora's severed foot back to his own home for storage. It was still something he was uncomfortable with keeping hidden (and they both had written up reports of the entire incident by this point).

"My apologies that I did not do this sooner." His eyes flicked towards Leila and then back to what she was doing. "I wasn't expecting to lose a week's worth of memories."

drinks after work

They were somewhere around their fifth or sixth shot of gin. Jeremiah was rolling the glass between his palms because it was empty and it was a habit. It was definitely one of those times they were commiserating.

"I never thought I would say this but ******** the cold," he snorted. "******** it. I actually want to live somewhere in the south now. That's what this has done to me." The proper British man longing for warmer climates and, heaven forbid, tropical beaches.
