Having been given a few days to get himself settled in town, it was now time to get back to the grind. On one hand, getting back to work may make him feel less pissy over all. Moving in was a pain, and the circumstances of him coming here always lingered in the back of his head. Being in a small town was nothing like living and working in the city. In the past few days, he had been keeping an ear out for what sorts of troubles Ashdown seemed to get. All he got from that was that it felt far too quiet. With some paperwork in hand, he trudged on into the police department early in the morning. While he wasn't as thrilled as he could be about this, he wasn't about to be late. After speaking with the receptionist briefly, he was directed to Mercer's office. Letting out a sigh, he went ahead and knocked lightly on the door. "Sgt. Shun Kuroda, reporting in."

"Come in, Sergeant," Jeremiah's voice carried well with actually having to raise it, his accent so very obvious even after all these years in the states. Once the door was pushed open there was a desk with only two pictures on it, both of which were faced towards the window and the chair that were behind it. There was a board that had his case work on the three missing teens, still up and the files there. It was a reminder of his promise. It was still his case, it was still what he devoted time too in between other cases. Just how much? That was his business. The Detective Lieutenant himself was finishing up the last bit of a report before he was pushing himself up to stand. "Good to finally meet you, Sergeant Kuroda." Jeremiah's face was neutral, blue-green eyes studying the Sergeant. He was dressed in his usual work attire, though the shirt looked to be a thicker material the warming weather would dictate. There were always layers with this man now. "Detective Lieutenant Jeremiah Mercer," he said as he moved around his desk and held out his hand.

Hearing the accent wasn't really something Shun expected. Though once he got past the initial surprise, he thought nothing of it. Upon entering the office, he took a quick glance around, getting a feel of who Jeremiah Mercer was exactly. The board that appeared to deal with the missing teen case that he's heard about since arriving to Ashdown. Apart from weird mumbo jumbo s**t that he put no stock into, it seemed that was the biggest problem the town had currently. He considered the place lucky. He briefly wondered if it was worth it to stop wearing body armor under his attire. Such thoughts were quickly nixed. Complacency kills. Even if this was just a small and seemingly quiet and peaceful town... he didn't want to take that chance. Giving a curt nod in greeting, he stepped forward, studying the other detective in turn. Eyeing the outstretched hand, he reached out and gave a firm, but brief shake. "A pleasure, Detective Lt. Mercer," he said in turn, "I hope I was not interrupting anything upon my arrival."

His office was mostly plain, every bit of it organized and clearly kept that way on a regular basis. There was a couch for overnighters - and there had been several - and then his desk with only two personal effects on it that were the pictures. The only out of place thing on the Detective Lieutenant was the calla lily that was on his vest but otherwise he was extremely well put together. He was never without his shoulder holster or gun, even in a town that was supposedly quiet. Neat and tidy, Jeremiah Mercer was immaculate from the perfectly maintained level of stubble to the way his hair was combed. His expressions were neutral, just the slightest twitch of lips every now and then. This was a man who gave away only what was meant to be seen. Jeremiah's grip was firm as well, short, and his hand falling back to his side. "Not in the slightest," he replied and gestured to one of the two chairs in front of his desk, "have a seat, Sergeant. I've already spoken to both the Chief and the Captain. We've been down a detective since Barber retired three months ago, so it is good to finally see someone. " Blade Kuroda should it have been inquired about: the missing teens is considered cold for the time being. mercer works it when a lead pops up but that is few and far between and usually nothing. this would be common knowledge.

Nothing really frivolous to be seen here, which was a welcome sight. The flower in the man's vest was a curiosity, but Shun didn't inquire about it right now. It probably wasn't all that important, really. He did take note of the gun, and thought nothing of it. His own was kept on him at all times as well. It just wasn't always in plain sight. As for Shun, he wore no vest or tie for the time being, but he was still dressed properly for the job. With a nod, he seated himself in one of the chairs in front of Mercer's desk. His gaze flicked to the board in the back briefly, before settling on the older Detective. His own features betrayed little to no emotion. "Was Barber the only other detective in the agency apart from yourself?"Being a small town, he knew the department couldn't be that big either. But it was still... odd hearing it.

The sergeant was given a slight eyebrow raise. "What would make you think he was the only other one? This is a town with a fairly large population and as such we have seven detectives." Jeremiah's expression was still neutral, nothing given away. "You'll be the eighth and fill in the position that has been vacant since Barber left." He was going to have a seat but then stopped himself, a hand resting on case files to be handed out shortly. "Most of the time you'll probably find yourself bored, especially considering you're from New York but there is more than enough to keep your mind sharp."

"Understood."Well that was a relief. He just hoped he wouldn't end up underestimate anything else around here. Shun shifted in place, then turned his attention to what appeared to be a number of case files on the desk. Chances were that they weren't the sorts of things that he was used to seeing, but it was still work to do in the very least. Still, it was probably a good idea to get a feel for what he should be expecting, now that he worked here. As far as the boredom comment went... he wasn't sure if that was a blessing or a curse. On one hand, he supposed it was a good thing that there wasn't nearly as much crime here than in the city. On the other, being idle made him antsy. It usually put him in a bad (worse) mood. "What are the usual cases I can expect to see around here?"He did recall seeing some emblem grafitti'd around town, though he didn't hear anything about any local gangs in particular.

"Theft, assaults, wellness checks, the occasional drug dealer, and dealing with the graffiti." Jeremiah's lips twitched a bit, the first sight of an expression. The explanation would never be easy if the rest of the town knew. "The last death that required an investigation was back in March and that turned out to be drug related." The silver-haired man finally took his seat and flipped open one of the case files on top before sliding it to Shun. It was a B&E case wherein the house had been thoroughly wrecked and it was one of the cases to be assigned shortly. Just so he would see one of the more usual cases. "There is usually more than enough to keep you occupied but you are likely use to things happening far more often than they do here in Ashdown."

"The city was never quiet," Shun commented as he took the folder to flip through it. He was going to need to take more time later to really dig into reading it. For now, he was just trying to get a rough jist of it. As he did so, he added lowly, "And honestly, if it ever did go quiet, something has gone seriously wrong."Closing the folder for now, he set it back down onto the desk and looked back up at Jeremiah. "I have seen some graffiti around town. Do you think it is just some kid trying to get... 'expressive'? Or gang related?"

"You are more likely to always have whispers here but never true quiet." If they were going to allude to the way things were. "There is always some thing or the other but it may not be as exciting as you'd want it to be." Jeremiah shook his head, blue-green eyes glinting. "Or that I'd like to be." The case was picked up and slid back into it's stack so that it could be assigned out. "It showed up not that long after that spell of fog where we had to issue a restriction on people even heading outside. You had no visibility past a foot in front of yourself." There was a teacup that sat on his desk, on a coaster, and he leaned to pick it up and have a drink. "At the moment it's believed that there's a group of art students from Rider-Waite that are trying to make some kind of artistic statement. Not gang related as there's little to no gang activity here. We are quick to move on anything that is tied to mafia, cartel, or gangs." Seriously. The moment there was any scent of gang activity, it was squashed.

Shun slowly tilted his head at that, though he quickly shook it off. He had heard murmurs of the 'great fog' awhile back. Sometimes he wondered if people were exaggerating a bit when they described just how thick that fog was. It was certainly believable that there would be restrictions on travel but... It still sounded a little on the far-fetched side of things. "I see. Though that is for the better. Once any of those things get a foot hold, it becomes much harder to root them out."He knew that part a little too well. "But I suppose it is a good thing that the graffiti does not seem to be tied to anything particularly malicious thus far."

Jeremiah caught the head tilt even with as quickly as Shun shook it off. "I know it sounds like typical small town gossip and over exaggeration but there's video of it and everything. Just check out the hashtag fogpocalypse2016. You'll find everything about it." The comment about the foothold probably pulled the most reaction out of him, the corner of his mouth lifting up into a slight smirk. "It's one of the main focuses in the town. The Chief believes in a strong police presence to make sure everyone is aware and that those that may be less scrupulous and part of the underworld," sometimes he really loathed that word, "know better than to get involved here." His expression evened back out about the graffiti, just the slight lift and fall of his shoulders. "No, just street art. I will however advise you that should you look into it, please avoid the Shore mansion. They're about one step away from filing against us because a few officers got a little too exuberant and accused some of their interns of the graffiti. Not any of my detectives either otherwise I would have put them through their paces."

Now that made him curious. Shun was going to need to look more into that fog to see just how bad it was. He nodded once as Jeremiah elaborated on their Chief's beliefs. At least it seemed like they had a fairly tight handle on things. s**t was always going to happen, but he always felt that vigilance was important for any police agency. Dealing with gangs was always messy, he found. "I shall... keep that in mind. And I will keep an eye out, just in case."It was vandalism, but it seemed more harmless than some of the other issues at hand. He figured he may look into it if he didn't have as much else to deal with. "Is there anything else I should know?"

"Best to always keep an eye out. Sharp eyes are a requirement that I have personally for my detectives." Jeremiah meant it as well. A sharp eye for detail and attention to the little things that most would let go unnoticed was something he wanted everyone to be able to do if they wanted to call themselves detective here. "Not particularly. The case with the missing teens is on the back burner until we have any more leads but if something comes up, that'll be back to high priority." Jeremiah pushed himself up from his desk and tilted his head towards the door. "If you'd join me, I need to get these cases handed out and you can introduce yourself to the rest of the squad." Blade Kuroda can do a wrap/fade to black with my next post and plot another RP <3

"I would not be much of a detective otherwise," Shun replied. Being able to spot things was kind of crucial to the job, he felt. Pushing himself up to his feet, he nodded once in turn. Given how long those teens were missing already, he wasn't sure if there was even much hope that they'd be found at this point. At least alive. Or even in one piece, necessarily. Without another word, he went on to follow Mercer out the door. He may not be all too happy to be here, but thus far, he could safely say that his superior seemed competent and respectable. Which was more than what could be said about some of the officers he knew back home.
