Leila and Zac –

He just went in to treat himself to breakfast before class. It wasn’t that he didn’t like what Nasir cooked, far from it…Nasir was outstandingly good at what he did. Just sometimes there was something you wanted about Diner food. Plus, he figured, it would give him some time to think. Some time to think about what he’d be doing about the pictures he’d been reviewing on his phone.

Should he or should he NOT try and talk to Sunny?

That kind of preoccupation was possibly why he was so distracted, and didn’t notice one of his teachers at first.

Leila really should have had an excuse for being here -- she'd overslept, they were out of eggs at home -- but the fact of the matter was simply that she ******** loved this trashy spot of grease on the west end of campus, and sometimes the craving was too much to bear. So she'd told Eve that she was going to shorten her lifespan for breakfast this morning, and with a nod and a wave she was out and ready to stuff herself full of carbs.

She'd just had a glass of orange juice brought over when a familiar face stepped in. One of her students, and also was living with Jeremiah, if she remembered right.

"Hey! Don't think I remember your name -- but you're Mercer's kid, right? In my intro-eco section?" she called, brightly. "Get over here, let's have some breakfast."

Certainly she startled him. He blinked and stared at her for a moment, open mouthed. “I…ah..oh… Hi.” He stammered, brought out of his introspection. “Uh… yes, he’s my g…guardian.” He stammered.

Get over here and have some breakfast? Uhh “Umm…Yes, ah, ok!” He said and nervously walked over. “I… Uh…I promise I did the homework.” He said, and…hoped he’d done the homework. Things HAD been a bit crazy after all.

"That's good to hear," said Leila, while sliding the menu over to Zac, "but this isn't high school. The only time I care about your homework is in class time or during office hours. Right now the rest of your life is more important. Especially breakfast. I'm buying, so take advantage."

"I, um... thank you." He said surprised by the offer to play for food. Yes it probably wasn't breaking the bank but it was really nice all the same.

"Sorry...it's been kind of um," He waved a hand trying to find a way to encompass 'weird and busy' without sounding like he was utterly insane.

"Look, I muck around in ripe corpses for a living," the teacher grinned, "so don't worry about weirding me out. Not to mention I was in Other Ashdown with that stupid foot. You were there too, right?"

“We…well yes, if you put it that way.” He had to concede that did cover a LOT of ground for weird, and… a lot for gross as well. “You…probably handled the foot better than most of us. I still have odd dreams about it turning up in strange places.” He shook his head though he was speaking he hoped quietly enough that no one would overhear.

“Have you, have you had much to do with it since then?” he asked, brows almost to his hair line while he poked half distracted at the menu.

Leila was speaking at her normal volume, which was one that generally didn't care much about being overheard. Though she wouldn't admit it, that was partly because she wanted to be overheard. If it did anything to make the town more aware of the sometimes-dangerous strangeness that hovered invisibly over it, she'd be okay with some random eavesdropper knowing what color underwear she had on when she took the ******** foot.

And yet... the thought of talking about the foot past just the mention made her feel a little cagey. "I'm not sure how many details on that I should disclose, but we have it in cold storage. After that I finally learned you can just end up in Other Ashdown for no reason any time of the day. I'm sure everyone we saw there has a story of some kind now."

A server came up to see if Zac needed anything to drink -- Leila took the opportunity to order a large pile of Ashbrowns (yes, ashbrowns) and a smaller pile of pancakes.

Zac opted for Home fries, (seasoned) a waffle and a glass of Orange Juice.
He reflected on…cold storage and ultimately decided he really didn’t think he wanted to know what that meant.

“Yeah… Jer told everyone I got lost in the woods for the…time I was gone. It’s been kinda weird. I’m not so hot at lying to people like that. I feel like one of the Park rangers is going to find me and call totally BULL.” He sighed.

The little anecdote made Leila snicker under her breath a bit. Regardless of the circumstances behind which Zac came into his care, he was definitely Jeremiah's kid: chronically uncomfortable for some reason, and with deep misgivings about lying. "Well, at least there's a few people around who know the true story, right? Sorry you have to play along with a cover story, though. I wouldn't like it either. You staying safe when s**t gets weird, I hope?"

“As… much as the average person I think?” He said with a small grin.
“Distinctly less trouble I think than Mr. Mercer, but I’m also trying to keep my research into things on, this side of reality. Being stuck will rather take the wind out of your exploring sails, never mind uh… feet.”

The food came to them remarkably quick, and Leila wasted no time in letting go of her inhibitions with the butter and syrup. She was dressing up her pancakes like a little kid -- it was a wonder she hadn't asked for chocolate chips or whipped cream.

"Learned anything people should know?" she asked, while being just as liberal with ketchup on her hash browns. "I haven't ended up on the other side more than once again myself. Found some kind of magical princess in a basement that time, though."

“Umm… There is a history book in the library that has a ink-block like picture that I am about 90 percent sure is sunny, it is just called “Indian Girl” because…yessssss.” He said the last word through slightly clenched teeth but didn’t pursue a grump at this time.

“Um… The…book that Heliodora was doing a report on rings curiously true to town history, there was a … Princess who fell in love with a man with eyes like the sea? Umm…” He looked thoughtful.

“On a creepy scale these paintings are in the House on the Hill? someone said Sunny lives there, I think she does in the top floors but…here.”

He pulled out his phone and brought up the pictures, starting with the ‘Jeremiah’ look alike.

"Damn, I can see what you mean," said Leila, after accepting the phone and thumbing through the pictures. "Sunny's that pack-of-smokes girl from everyone's favorite rumors, right?" She was a bit out of the loop on some of the details. That Jeremiah lookalike, though... things kept getting weirder in ways she wasn't expecting. Ashdown was methodically revealing itself to be a sort of living fairy tale. The classical, bizarrely violent kind, not the Disney-polished PG kind. She doubted Jeremiah would turn out to secretly be thousands of years old like Pax and Heliodora apparently were, though. Or at least he'd be up front about it if he knew.

"Do town census records say anything illuminating?" she asked upon handing back the phone.

“Yeah… I mean… I think it’s sunny but… at the same time It…” he shrugged. “It’s a little…” he waved his hand. “Well I mean the fact it’s titled Sunshine could be HER or it could be… well, I mean to show it to her and ask some time so yeah. If she doesn’t toss me back into Other Ashdown I might get an answer.

He took a breath and let it out. “Um…” He admitted. “s**t… I think I forgot those.” He admitted.
“There was a lot of weird with the house, like, the husband of the care taker, well, I know this will sound weird but he sounds like, like imagine like 50 people all talking at the same -time-.”
