A grumble left the young woman as she rubbed at the side of her thigh. So far she'd managed to get several scratches on it from some not so forgiving underbrush. "Tch.. stupid branches.." Rajani took a deep breath and looked around at where she was. Just from the small amount of noise she could hear in the distance she knew she was getting close to a town. That meant there would be food. Sadly, it also meant that there would be people. Her hand went from rubbing at the raw skin of her leg to gently sliding up and down the opposite arm to give herself comfort. As long as I avoid everyone I should be fine.. She thought to herself. While she knew it was inevitable for her to run into someone she just hoped that that would be all it was. A simple bump and a muttered excuse me. Anything else would likely cause her to panic.

Looking around Rajani tried to see if there was a local road that she could mosey on over to. If there was then she could steal from a traveler and avoid the whole crowd scenario altogether. With that in mind she started heading toward what looked like a break in the trees. Maybe that was the road she was looking for.

Keline sighed as she rubbed at her face. Her mother and sister had gotten into another fight over their aunt and Keline had begun to develop a headache. She was only too happy to escape from the house that day. And even more happy that it was the one day her and her best friend had designated to meeting up at a certain spot between their towns. They had found the clearing one day, when exploring together, and had slowly built it up to be a sort of clubhouse. She glanced up towards the sky, squinting as she tried to judge the position of the sun through the treetops. Most likely she was late. Kel was always late. Naji always forgave her too. He really was the best of friends.

With her face to the sky, Kel didn’t notice the rock in the road until her toes connected with it and she tumbled forward. She sputtered as dust, from the path, flew up around her and her hair fell into her face. Huffing, she pushed back up onto her feet, dusted herself off and adjusted her pack. She was thankful that Naji hadn’t been around to see her trip. He would have teased her to no end about being clumsy (as he always did). Keline quickly glanced around, to make sure no one else had been around to see her, and, when she realized no one was there, she continued off in the direction of their meet up place.

Tangled Puppet

Just as she was about to step out onto the road she paused. There was someone coming her way. So Rajani stepped behind a tree and waited. Though she saw an Alkidike that looked to be around her age. Blinking, and staring, she watched as the girl tripped over a rock and went sprawling to the dirt. It made Rajani cringe slightly. Though it did look like the girl was embarrassed by the fact that she fell since she looked around to see if anyone was looking. Once the alk started to walk again she stepped out into the open and called out to her. "Are you alright? That looked like it hurt." The idea to simply steal from the girl had crossed her mind but given what had just happened, well Rajani didn't want to add insult to injury.

"I mean you prolly stubbed your toe, right?" The shifter girl cleared her throat and fidgeted a bit. When Rajani moved her head slightly the light coming through the trees hit her face the right way and showed that she had faint Alkidike markings on her face.

At the sound of the unfamiliar voice Keline jumped, heart slamming against her chest as she jerked around to face the intruder. She had been sure she was alone on the pathway. Her eyes narrowed on the shifter — a girl much the same age as she was — and her cheeks flared red at her question. “I...I’m alright. I’m just clumsy.” She rubbed at her cheeks and was just about to look away from the girl, out of embarrassment, when the light hit her just the right way and she saw the light alkidike markings. Surely her eyes were playing tricks on her. The girl looked like a pureblood shifter, not a hybrid. But Kel could have sworn she had seen those markings, though. Frowning, she finally spoke up again. “Are you...from around here? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”

Well that was good. She nodded her head and cleared her throat. Well this was awkward. Clearly Rajani was no good at simply having a conversation. But it seemed like the Alkidike was saving her from trying to make small talk. "Eh? Oh ah.." The girl kicked at the dirt. "No. I.. I mean I was but.." It was something she didn't want to broadcast across Jauhar.

"I moved away when I was younger.. Now I'm moving back." It wasn't exactly a lie. Rajani just didn't want there to be a rumor started that she was back in the area. Just in case it got back to her parents. Back to her brother. She wasn't ready for all that just yet.

“Oh. Well, welcome back,” Keline said as she fidgeted with her tunic she’d slipped on earlier, and struggled to find something to talk about. “I’m not from around here. I was pretty young when my mother decided to move from Amara.” She couldn’t help but keep thinking about the slight shimmer of markings she had seen on the girl’s face and, so, she kept trying to move ever so slightly to catch another glimpse. “I...I don’t want to see rude but...are you a hybrid?”

Amara. If she remembered right that was on those isles the Alkidike lived on. Rajani could remember some things from when she lived in the area. Then she heard the girl ask if she was a hybrid. It took her a minute to understand what the girl meant. However, when she did the shifter laughed. "Ah.. no? I don't think I'd be considered one." Rajani reached up and rubbed the area where her spots were.

"My great gram was an Alk but there have been no other Alks in the family since." That made her one eighth Alkidike and she was sure that you had to be at least one fourth. So she missed being considered a hybrid by one generation. Not that she minded. Rajani did love her spots though, they were unique to her.

“Huh…” Keline didn’t really understand the logic behind that. If you had the race in you...they were part of you — no matter how little it shined through. She wouldn’t argue with the girl, however. How would Kel even know herself? She’d not been friends long with Naji...and the male was the first hybrid person she’d ever met. Before him, there had been only alks around her. Keline glanced around as a small, awkward silence fell between the two of them. She really should be getting to hers and Naji’s hideout. Fidgeting slightly, Kel debating on inviting the shifter before finally caving. “Have you explored much around here? I could show you a really neat place. My friend, Naji, and I found this clearing and we set up a small club house. It’s not far from here. But...but you couldn’t tell anyone else about it, yeah? It’s our secret meeting place.”

She shrugged again then looked around just as awkwardly as the Alkidike did when the silence took over. When she was invited along it took Rajani a moment to understand. "Oh.. uh, sure?" It wasn't like the girl was going to hurt her.. right? And she certainly hadn't seen any intent to touch her.

Rajani moved a bit closer to Keline but managed to stay a good bit away. "Hey, you got a name? I don't think you'd like me to call you Alk." Not that she wouldn't if there was nothing else to call out.

Keline blinked, eyes widening a bit as a small giggle escaped her lips. She hadn’t even really thought about giving the shifter her name. It wasn’t a lack of wanting to, Keline had just forgotten. “Oops, sorry. My name’s Keline. Kel for short.” She paused from her walking and extended a hand towards the shifter — a small, friendly greeting in Kel’s mind. “What’s your name?”

The girl's giggle was contagious and made Rajani giggle as well. "Oh, a pretty name." The shifter nodded her head. It was certainly one that the girl could grow with.

As the Alkidike put her hand out she stared at it. The palms of her hands itched. What would it hurt to shake her hand? Thinking about it psyched her out and she took a step away. "Uhm... I'm sorry. I.. I don't like to be touched." Now she'd ruined the mood. Frowning she looked at the ground. Rajani hadn't wanted to offend the girl. In fact she had been hoping to make friends with her.

"Oh! But.. My name is Rajani." Quickly she looked up at Keline and brought her smile back.

Keline felt her cheeks redden slightly as the compliment to her name was given. She hadn’t run into too many people that had done as such and, so, she wasn’t used to hearing it. When the shifter girl said she didn’t like to be touched, Keline blinked, confused. Why on earth would someone not like to be touched? She opened her mouth to ask as such but frowned. Kel chastised herself — it was none of her business why this stranger didn’t like to be touched. Instead, she closed her mouth, gave Rajani a small smile and nodded before pulling her hand back. “S’ok. I like your name too. How long have you been back in Jauhar?”

It was always awkward trying to tell someone that she didn't like being touched. Rajani couldn't help it though. It was either tell them and deal with the awkward silence, questions, or whatever, OR avoid them altogether and have them thinking stars knows what. "I.. I don't know exactly. I've not kept track." Without chores and a set routine she had honestly lost track of all time in general. It could have been a day, a month, or a year. Everything blurred together for her. "How far is the walk from Oba to here?" Rajani knew it was more than a day.

"Er, well I guess that would depend on if I took a straight route and I don't know that either..." It was a good thing she wasn't supposed to be anywhere then.

Keline blinked, head tilting to the side as Rajani continued to talk. “I’m...not actually sure how far that is. I’ve never been past Ast. I grew up on Isle Amara and then we moved to Andile. So this area is all I know.” She raised an eyebrow as another question came to her. “What’s Oba like? I’ve always wanted to visit. I want to see all over. But...I can’t yet. Maybe not for a while.” Her shoulders sank a bit at the thought of being stuck in Jauhar for years to come. It wasn’t what she wanted but it was what her family wanted — and needed. After her aunt had been exiled and left, Keline’s mother and sister had been butting heads. Then her mother’s depression… No, Keline had to stay around for a few more years. She owed that much to her mother and sister.

She listened to Keline as she said she wanted to see beyond Jauhar. "I wouldn't bother. Jauhar is the best place to be." At least, it was to her. Then again, she was partial to it.

"Oba is.. hot. And crowded." Rajani wasn't about to tell the girl that she had spent most of her time inside. Locked in a room.

When her stomach growled she colored a little in the cheeks and brought a hand up to rub at it. It had been a day or so since she'd last had anything to eat. Rajani had thought about stealing from the Alkidike but seeing the girl fall had changed her mind. Now she was paying for it. "Ah, do you know of anywhere I can get some food?" Since she didn't have much in the way of money she was hoping that she could find something to steal.
