The swelling had gone down enough to leave the bandages and compresses back in the camper and allow her to put some make-up on over the black eye and bruising across her forehead. It was enough to keep folks on the street from doing a double-take for the wrong reasons (her right reasons were, as they often are, clearly on display) though it was still too soon after the accident to fool actual scrutiny.

Passing by a trendy little bar, she makes a note of it to see later if maybe they were hiring and then she pauses and America is the one doing a double take. There was something about it that niggled at her eyes but didn't quite connect with her head which meant just maybe it was one of the...

Setting down her large straw bag, the girl pulled out the old album that had brought her through Ashdown in the first place. It hadn't really...it hadn't worked the way she'd hoped, but it was a hope formed over years and those sorts were hard to just give up on. Carefully flipping through pages of polaroids, all bits and pieces of places and barely a person to be glimpsed at, she found the one that had prodded at her. The front of a building, a partial sign that didn't match the one up there now, one of the few that had caught a bit of her mother in it, smiling shyly in the window's reflection.

Things about it were different, it wasn't exact anymore, but she still found herself backing up toward the edge of the sidewalk and holding the photo up until the lines of the building merged with the one from years ago and she tries to imagine it: another girl, 'bout the same age, twenty years ago. Little bit shorter but near the same face, but a bit softer on the edges, same hair. Ma was quieter, everyone said so. She wasn't as sturdy. But here I am, where she stood and...

America sighed gustily, letting her arm drop.

The door to the bar was pushed open and two dog hastily tried to squeeze themselves through the doorway at the same time. There was much huffing and tongue lolling as a fat rottweiler and gangly great dane battled for priority before exploding out onto the sidewalk and began sniffing around before making their way around the corner of the building. Apparently they knew not to do their business in front of the bar.

America would remain ignored until their business was completed.

A massive man followed with a cheery face under his snowy hair and beard. He seemed squeezed into his sleeveless faded Sturgis '95 t-shirt and was everything you'd expect of a biker between his battered black boots, belted jeans and smattering of mismatched tattoos. He whistled sharply through his teeth as the dogs drifted too far and they rounded obediently back to him.

"Afternoon.." He smiled at the pretty little thing he didn't recognize and just as the dogs seemed to notice her (swarming even) he rumbled low, "Behave yourselves.."

"Hey, there," the girl looked up and then up a bit more with a widening smile. He was a great big fridge of a man, and for a moment there was a pang and the thought of what Pa was up to but then there were dogs and America knew the only appropriate reaction to dogs.

"Oh my goodness, sweet peas in a pod! Aren't you both so handsome!" She exclaimed holding out a hand for eager inspection for one and then the other. "Look at you two, look at you two."

Within second she was crouching down eye level with them, making kissy faces and complimenting them shamelessly. The picture fell to the ground, forgotten entirely for the moment because dogs.

The dogs wriggled, sniffed and made their best attempt at licking her face which included slurping at the air when she was out of reach.

"This is Dummy," Borr leaned and scratched the tubby rottweiler's butt which made the dog pause and lean in satisfaction, "And the gawky princess there is Knucklehead."

The Great Dane's ear had flipped inside out and he moved to flip it back when Borr noticed the fallen picture. He leaned to pick it up, looking at it quizzically (he knew his own bar when he saw it), "Who is she? "

The older men then blinked, "If you don't mind me askin."

"Awwww..." America cooed at the less than complimentary names and bubbling up with laughter at the phrase gawky princess.

Startled by the question, the girl looked up toward the man and the photo he held. For a moment the laughter seemed to freeze and then she relaxed again, "That's my mom, bout when she was my age. I'm doing a sorta...time traveling picture tour of the town, I guess."

It was followed by an ain't it strange sort of smile.

Borr's chin and jaw seemed to tighten in an approving nod and the idea. "Pretty girl, yer mom. And that's definitely The Pub.."

He offered the picture back even though she was occupied with the dogs and smiled, "Coulda been around when we bought the place."

Dummy seemed to settle a bit, like the excitement was wearing him out and the rottweiler's wide behind plopped on the pavement. Borr gave him a head scratch, "Name's Borr. I own this place."

Straightening up, America carefully took the photo and placed it back in the album. Holding out her hand to him, she answered in turn, "America Jones, nice to meetchya."

Rocking back a bit on her heels, she gave the bar another look, explaining, "Mom moved away here before i was even so much as a goodnight kiss between her n'Pa. Woulda been at least a good twenty years ago." She hesitated for a moment after that but in the end, she might as well right? "Her name was Leanne, Leanne Baird back then."

But before she can go further, invest in the idea of touching on some memory, some bit of color to better fill in the picture of her mom, America went on, switching tracks. "Y'all hiring?"

"A pleasure Miss America," Yes his eyes actually twinkled with that one, "Nice to meet you too."

The dogs looked finished at this point, Dummy was sitting heavily on one of Borr's boots and Knucklehead was sniffing at the solitary motorcycle that rested against the side of the building. The bar itself had long, long ago been a house, then a bar, then a shitty bar and with some renovations and a fresh coat of paint it became a halfway decent place but still retained that years ingrained charm.

"You know my wife Darlene may have known your mom," he said with a sad smile, "But she passed a few years ago." Borr moved back a few feet and pulled the bar door open. The dogs, well trained, went right inside.

"You hungry? Got some real good cooks. Why don't you come in and take a rest and we can talk about it." He pointed to her album, "Maybe I can help you with your search a little. Not born here but I've been around a while."

She brightened at the offer, eyes crinkling as she answered, "Yeah? That'd be really nice, thanks Mister Borr." He didn't make it awkward or weird and the relief of that eases itself along any odd edges that framed the idea of her mom and whatever she was trying to do here. He lost someone too and for a moment, America can't help but wonder if getting to know more about her mom will make it worse. Like losing more than an idea of a person. The thought is let go after the barest brush of hesitation.

No point in worrying. This was going to be a nice thing, she was sure of it.

Plus, free food.

And dogs.

The frustrations that had filled her days since the accident were peeling back enough to make breathing a little bit easier, to make taking in the fact that this might be a nice little town on its own merit a bit more apparent.

Following him in, the girl glancing around and wondering what's changed and if her mom had ever stepped in here, all fake IDs and bad news fun in mind. Probably not, from all accounts she didn't see the type, even if her daughter was. But it was important enough for her to have taken a picture of, so maybe those accounts weren't quite comprehensive.

Borr held the door for America as they entered. The dogs seemed to both go towards designated spots that were theirs though for Dummy it was sleeping in a worn floor spot by the bar itself and for Knucklehead it was a rather abused looking booth that she sat in and stared out the side window.

The bar itself had clearly been fixed up by the newer looking furnishings and upholstery in the booths, but it still had most of the original woordwork and the original bar. The decor was biker-americana, typical really, collections of town pictures, old license plates, animal heads, signed paraphenalia from the few celebrities that had ever passed through, and kitschy mass produced signs and posters that looked like they may have been hanging for years.

The right wall was the bar itself and the back of the room was a low raised platform that was clearly meant for open mic nights, poetry slams, and local band performances. There was clear area by the bathrooms with a chalk wall and dart boards- the remnants of the dart league's scores half wiped away (and team names like WE GOT BIG BALLS vs. THE PINK LADIES). A small cork board hung fliers for local events, yard sales, and local businesses as well as people seeking boarders or roommates.

Borr made his way behind the bar, an older waitress moving back out to the floor when he rejoined the room, and he patted a spot at the opposite end of two old men that were so decrepit and permanent that they seemed near melded to their bar stools (they also whistled cackling greetings at her despite Borr's sharp looks).

"Have a seat and tell me about yourself."

After shooting the oldsters a wink and a grin, America settled onto the stool and began her little story without much hesitation. "Well I graduated school last spring and had been working and saving up for years to drive cross country. Fixed up a little camper n'everything. Stopped here in Ashdown 'cause my mom's album. She passed when I was born so I never really had much else of her to go by. Was on my way out of town when something ran out in front of my truck, and let me assure I didn't run into no tree. But I might as well have for the mess it's caused."

Resting an elbow on the bar, she gave Borr a chagrined look, "Camper's fine at least, so I got a place to stay, but it's gonna take a lotta time and money to fix my truck. I've done a fair bit of waitressing here and there, though never a place like this gotta say. Diner work, y'know?"

Borr smiled, "Did the same myself, though I guess I just wanted to travel. Got on my bike and went as soon as I could."

The big man leaned, "You want something to drink?" He knew she wasn't legal now, so no alcohol (until she got on his good list).

"Serving tables is much the same everywhere, I imagine. The basics anyway. Are you gonna move on when your truck's fixed?" A bushy brow lifted. It wasn't clear if he was fishing for true information or just looking to see if this would be a briefer arrangement than he'd like.

"Root beer, thank you much."

And it's here that she grew a little uncertain, bit awkward. "I don't know," she admitted. "Gonna be a few months, so I guess I got time to decide. But I'd give at least a few weeks notice, soon as I figure things out." She tried to give him a reassuring smile, but honestly just looked kind of lost and very much eighteen and alone.

Borr nodded and turned his back as she talked, moving around and coming back with a bottle of root beer that he popped the cap of before handing it over.

It wasn't that he was hurting for staff with his new hires, so a limited engagement wouldn't be a bad thing. For all he knew she may end up like him, wandering until she found that place that gave her a reason to stop. Maybe this place had her reason, maybe not.

"Is your camper a reasonable distance?" If her truck was bunk, walking would be her option, especially if the camper was in one of the campgrounds by the forest.

He then laughed, "I'm not gonna have the police knocking with a poster with your face on it or anything?"

Taking a sip, America's brows went up in pleasant surprise and turned the bottle to peer at the label. Tasty stuff.

"It's just south of town, bit before the forest but not a bad distance. Usually run further most mornings."

The thought of a poster with her name on it summoned a grinning huff of laughter, "Much as some of my uncles threaten to, I should hope not. I like to be reliable."
