Archaeology 101 - The Principles to Digging up the Past

Diggs stood in front of his class with a stack of books set upon his desk, resting his hand upon them as he grinned. “Good morning, good morning to you class! I’m Professor Davron, but I’d rather you all call me Diggs. Since you are all new to this class and this class is new to you, we have some things to cover! Today we are going to go over some basic principles of archaeology. Starting with the back row up there, I want you all to make your way down, one row at a time and pick up one of these Principles of Archaeology books.” His hand lifted from its place on the books as he continued. “For you, this means homework! But don’t groan! Groaning gets you a delay in our next assignment. Believe you me, you don’t want to put that off because then you’ll miss out on the big fun that is to come! It’s something to be excited for!” Waving the back row down, Diggs stepped to the side and let his students come pick up a book and return to their seats. As everyone settled back into their rightful spots, he grabbed up his own copy. “You can either start the assignment now, or when you head home for the night, but by tomorrow I want a short essay on my desk. I want you to pick one of the principles stated in this book and tell me why you think it’s the most important of them!” The Fey grabbed up his hat that was resting on the edge of the dry erase board, placed it on his head, and tipped it to his class. “Dismissed! Take it how you will!”

Response: All eight of the principles are essential to the long-term preservation of the archaeological record and the advancement of our knowledge. However, principle number four should be given special consideration. The point of archaeology is to uncover the past of Nightmare and Daydream lives. As all people are, in one way or another, our ancestors, our heritage is to be found within the archaeological record. It is therefore of great importance that we reach out to communities for support and education. Archaeology is a pointless academic pursuit without the interest of the public. Furthermore, we cannot protect the archaeological record on our own. The help of the public is greatly needed, and not to be underestimated. Educating the public can preserve the archaeological record and foster good faith and good relationships with the people who live near sites of interest.

Response: Mesektet stood up on their belly. "I think all of the tools are equally important," they murmured. "I don't think there's a single one that is more important than the rest--there are many situations, and each situation will require a different tool, and it is for that reason that archaeologists use so many different tools." They hesitated, but went on, "but if I had to pick a favorite one, and I suppose I do, my favorite tool is the screen. I like the screen because it's something I never realized had to be used before. I guess I had never thought about what happens to small objects that get caught up loose in the dirt before, but now I do, so I'm grateful that we have a tool for recovering all of those lost artifacts. One object I didn't see listed on the list of tools that I think should be listed, though, is maps. I think that's maybe because they're very obvious, but maps can help archaeologists know the lay of the land and thus be able to find likely spots to excavate. A hill could hide a tomb; a newly-made river could expose an old, hidden site. Maps could tell you where these features are, as well as modern landmarks that can lead to new and exciting sites." Their speech over with, they sat back down in their chair.
