Sun Hunter SHADOW RUN General Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

Shadow run, as training courses went had never appealed to Lawrence. It was a little too much physical peril for him, too much putting himself in the hands of lazy sun hunters who might not save him in time. But lately he’d found himself less concerned about trivial things like that, determined to show Melvin and Rodney that he could do something without fainting and that he was fit again. It didn’t matter that his weight had only crept up a little since Harrison’s meddling, he was feeling better and needed some of his freedom returned to him.
<> Butch whined <>
Lawr ignored the canine as always, having his own reasons for doing everything that he did and seeing no reason at all to explain this to him, he enjoyed food, it was just other more important things that he enjoyed significantly more.
It was around dinner time when he arrived at the training course, fully inspecting no one to be using it and proven correct when only a few of the sun hunters stationed to maintaining it were around. He was wearing his mission cloak because generally he preferred to be mostly anonymous and had worn the same clothes he wore when training at night underneath.
Stepping into the corridor, he summoned Butch.

The first run went well to begin with, at the start of the corridor there were only a few sparse shadowlings milling around, killing them or at least dissipating them was satisfying, something he was allowed to destroy, an obstacle in his way which it was entirely simple to dispatch. He got more into it as he went and the second wave hardly had time to peel away from the walls before they found long and lethal glowing claws rending their very essence back to pieces. He felt calm, completely and utterly calm, the center of a storm which did not touch him or reach him. His heart rate picked up and it felt like an alien creature in his chest, separate from his mind and cognition. The only complaint he had was that the shadowlings, whatever they were, did not seem to exhibit pain in any gratifying fashion. The third wave was much the same, brutal and cold destruction of obstacles, it felt satisfying in a way like re-reading a book or rearranging items on a shelf, it was changing something, fixing something. It gave him a sense of control in a world where there was none. When he was overcome in the fourth wave he wasn't even surprised, able to feel his stamina giving way and knowing he wasn't a fighter, too starved and dispassionate to fight for long. He took a deep breath and let them pull him down, reminded far too much of the water at Wonder Park and its promise of a very permanent end. He was pulled out by one of the sun hunters and set back on his feet soon after, dazed and slightly irritable. Status Wave: 4Attack Dmg: 5 Total Shadowlings taken out: 16 Recoveries left: 0

He was too weakened by his previous ordeal when he began again to manage more than a few swipes at the initial wave of shadowlings. Butch whined in his thoughts and asked him to take it easier.. Status Wave: 1Attack Dmg: 0 Total Shadowlings taken out:Recoveries left:

This time he had given himself time to rest, stopping to have a sip of water and to let his breathing return to normal. He was patient and refused to be beaten by what was at its core simply a training simulation, failing this would simply mean that in future he would be prone to fail against very real and actual dangers, he would conquer it, regardless of what level of cunning it took because in the end there was one person he wanted to overcome rather than some aspect of his work he wanted to conquer.
Stepping back into the corridor this time he was armed with a determination and certainty he hadn't possessed the last time, he'd considered his tactical options and how to keep the creatures from overcoming him the way they had, ways of defending himself using the information that Harrison had given him prior to keep himself safe. The first shadowlings came and he was ready, swiping brutally at them before they could seize at his legs and keeping them back as he picked up speed.
The next wave he positively mutilated, allowing Butch's frenzied anger to guide his hands as he seized savagely at any shadowling which came too close and slashed others to ribbons, he even used the long chain to throttle one before casting it callously aside to swipe at the eyes of another.
As always he rapidly began to tire but this time he did not loosen his guard, still strategically attacking those most urgently close or those which could reach his legs or midriff, spurred ever onwards by Butches reminders that to fall was to tie, to lose your footing meant that they'd kill you, that you needed to bite and never let go.
The last wave was a close one, the shadowlings amassing around him and all but filling up the corridor and blocking the entrance. He didn't let them, gritting his teeth and going for the most vulnerable amongst them like a thing possessed, tossing them aside as he emerged at the end of the corridor breathless and vindicated.
He always won in the end he told himself, however long it took.
