They were the strangest creatures he had seen yet. Kian had left the caravan to go strolling through the evening dusk, a typical action for the hybrid, when he had noticed some strange rocks. Originally he had just wanted a place to relax, but seeing those rocks set in such a strange pattern intrigued him. What were they doing there? It seemed such an odd place for a gathering of stones. Had someone tried building something here? A makeshift camp without wood? He could imagine someone building a wall and then laying in the center. It definitely would make a secure area for a quick rest.
Usually his eyes were sharper in the darkness, but the hybrid’s carelessness prevented him from seeing that these rocks were in fact moving. Rather his own imagination of why they were there prevented him from seeing what they truly were. So Kian had started to move forward without a second thought. He had a path to walk, after all, and jumping over some stones should prove simple enough.
Jumping forward over a fallen tree, Kian attempted to land on top of one of the strange formations. Instead he found himself twisted to land on the grasses. Had those been eyes? His gaze narrowing, Kian smirked. Would you look at that? These were just some strange stocky creatures whose colorings made them look like stones in the darkness. And apparently they didn’t take well to being almost trod upon. They especially didn’t like the way his foot had connected with one of their sides. The growling noise that surrounded him attested to that.
As one dashed towards him Kian swiftly side stepped. It was sudden and he was far from a fighting mood, but how hard could these things be to conquer? Should be simple enough, not that I was wanting a real fight tonight. Still, if they insist… His gaze lighting up the hybrid twisted his body to dodge another ramming attempt. Instead the beast met the bottom of his boot. “Nice try.” He shook his head, “Stupid beasts.”
Whatever they were, the things were tenacious.
That much he could give them. Kian smirked as he danced with the five beasts. What was this? Some sort of speed training? He honestly didn’t think anything seriously of them until three came charging towards him at once. As they hit the hybrid winced. That definitely was going to bruise his ribs and leg. Perhaps they really were boulders after all. What were their heads made of to hurt so badly?
At least they didn’t have the sharp horns of a mammu. Kian had to count his blessings before spinning away again. It hurt to balance on both legs, but he managed to hold on despite the pain. This was surely nothing compared to what he had endured before. Nothing could beat the painful tests that he had grown up with or the more recent trials that he had created for himself. In order to become stronger one had to bleed! Gritting his teeth in determination Kian braced himself for another attack.
These creatures weren’t about to push him and get away with it! Gaze flaring up, Kian’s runes danced to life and a pattern almost seemed to flicker in the air around him. Everything suddenly was cold as the wind became sharper and deadlier. Hands reaching out the hybrid sent a flurry towards two of the ones who had attacked him. They would feel the pain that he felt!
Gaze flashing with lights, Kian blinked moments later and kicked the unconscious beasts to the side. “I won’t ask again. Let me pass.” He stared at the other three and as they moved forward the hybrid slowly lowered his hands, “Fine.”
He would show them mercy since that was what Talisia would want of him. Creatures, after all, were her passion and for him to even mar one would be a sin. Killing them was out of the question. A frown creased his forehead, but the hybrid stood to the side as the Gani rumbled past.
Retreat it is. Perhaps this was another aspect of training. Leaving behind the two fallen Gani, Kian began to run away from the three that still wanted to fight. They had endurance that was for certain! Smirking the male dashed through the plains before finding a grove of trees to twist through. At least he could lose them here.
As he rested against the trees and watched the guni leave, Kian wiped his brow. He was actually sweating. The hybrid chuckled faintly. I suppose I truly underestimated the little guys. His hands sticky with a mix of dirt, blood, and sweat Kian reached up and grabbed several leaves. Perhaps this could clean his hands better….it wasn’t the first time that he had to do such things. Water would be best, but he wasn’t for certain how far away a good water source would be.
His legs also hurt him and that chuckle had also brought a wince of pain. He had gotten rammed well and would need a good rest to recover. It was nothing that the healer at camp couldn’t look at. He could ask his mentor, but the last thing he wanted was to admit running into a pack of these animals and then losing to some of them.
Next time… Even if he couldn’t bring himself to kill them, he could at least chase them off. They would learn to avoid the hybrid. Kian could only smile, a small flash of white against the darkness of night, as he moved forward. Kian the powerful indeed. He was still as weak as a babe. There was so much more that he had to do…
But he would do it.
He was one determined mage after all. He had a goal and he had someone to protect. Whether she realized that he still thought of her or that he was even alive….she still had his protection. Until the very end. Now to just find some more beasts to fight against… (1010)
