If there was time to lean, there was time to clean. It was a philosophy Autumn held near and dear to her heart. She was a dedicated employee and an even more dedicated cleaner. Cleaning was therapeutic, cleaning was helpful. And yet, here was Dedicated Employee Autumn Smith (tm), very specifically not cleaning and, in fact, leaning. For those who knew her, this was very much not typical behavior.
She took a sip of her jasmine tea and sighed to herself. It was such a silly thing... why did she want a pet so badly? She'd been fine on her own before, but Autumn suddenly found herself very lonely and very in need of loving companionship. Companionship of the fluffy kind, to be specific. Zac and Mogget had created a stirring in her heart, one that could only be filled with purrs and meows and a precious little kitty.
Autumn wasn't the kind to drink on the job, but man, this was really bumming her out. If she didn't love Eve like a second mother, she would've considered a shot of something along with one of the fruitier teas.
"Get past it, Autumn. You're better than this."

In the past weeks Eve had grown used to the weekends being filled with mellow staccato of Autumn striding about the store dusting, sweeping, and realigning product on the shelves. It was soothing, and made the store feel like more of a real place regardless of how many customers meandered in that day. Eve had just tended to one, who had also bought an armful of treats from the candy store next door, before she realized how unusually quiet it was for a Saturday. "Need a break?" she asked. Not in an accusatory tone -- it was possible the girl was simply tired. Clover was peering momentarily up at her from her spot on the floor, offering a slow tail-wag.

For a moment, Autumn considered pushing off the truth and simply throwing herself back into her work. But then, Eve had always been good to her. REALLY good. Sighing again, Autumn offered Eve a very weak smile.
"I'm sorry, Eve. I know this is going to sound really silly, but I'm kind of in a funk? You're totally gonna laugh at me why," She said dismissively, picking up the broom and putting herself back into sweeping. That was the one kicker about selling loose leaf teas- there was a certain amount of dust and debris that accumulated around the floor of the store regardless. Autumn was still willing to wager that the floor shavings would taste better than Lipton, but she had the feeling that Eve wouldn't appreciate her attempts to sell floor product.
"I... met someone recently. Really sweet guy, kind of shy. We hit it off pretty well," she introduced, eyes trained on the floor as she swept. Her mind drifted back to the dinner with Zac, and she found herself smiling.
"...And he had the most PERFECT CAT IN THE WORLD. I'm telling you Eve, I had to stop myself from trying to steal him. He was soooooo cute!" She gave a dramatic twirl with the broom, thinking back to how perfectly sweet Mogget was.
"And now like. I can't stop thinking about how much I want a cat! My apartment is so lonely, and like. They're just hands-off enough that I don't have to crowd them all day, and we can co-exist without driving each other up the walls!"
Autumn shook her head.
"I know it's silly to distract me, but man. I just can't stop thinking about cats!"

Well, troubles of a crush seemed like a perfectly legitimate reason to be in a funk, except when it turned out to be because the girl wanted a cat... which, honestly, was also a perfectly legitimate reason to being as far as Eve was concerned. So, after giving a short, friendly laugh, she said so. "Needing reliable companionship is perfectly natural, if you think you can get it from a cat." Eve had become more of a dog person, obviously. "And it can be unhealthy to go without it. So really, it's not all that silly, Autumn."

At Eve's laugh, Autumn felt a lot better, her shoulders sagging from a weight off them she didn't realize she was carrying. Rubbing the back of her head, she laughed herself, and turned to her boss-and-friend.
"Do you think I'd be a good cat mom? I read myself sick on the internet last night, like. There's so many ways to mess it up. And of course, there's people all 'if you're not buying your cat more expensive food than you have, you're going to hell' and all that noise." She frowned a bit.
"I'd love a cat, and like. I'd get it good sh- stuff," she self-corrected, because this was still work, "but man. I just... I have a feeling I should get one."
"What do you think?"

"Well," the woman pondered, "worrying about whether you'll do a good job is usually a sign you will do a good job. If you think it's worth the worries involved, why not?"

"You know what?" Autumn said, smiling brightly as she went back to sweeping.
"I think I will."
