Algie couldn't claim that his deals with Sunny had been a waste. She'd eventually provided him with Finn and Aleksy's names and even though Aleksy had been little help (and they'd all ended up in other ashdown together in the end anyway), the author hadn't quite been provided the sort of answers in the other place that he'd wanted.

A few days later, after drama had died down and the town had issued piss poor statements in regards to all the disappearances (and reappearances) the professor went looking for Finn. He'd seemed rather level headed, a guide type, and being a park ranger in the area meant he may be able to answer some things more relevant to the town itself- and how it had been founded- and perhaps why Heliodora had been looking into it.

He showed up at the Visitor's Center on his day off, even his casual garb nothing less than multiple layers- button up, sweater and jacket. Heliodora's book was clasped in his hand as he asked for Finn and someone motioned towards the back room.

Ever polite, he knocked lightly and waited.

Finn cracked the door open and stuck his head out. There was a ranger out on the visitor center floor who was supposed to be keeping interruptions away while Finn tried to decipher the paperwork involved in people having gone missing in the park, so for someone to actually be disturbing him was pretty unusual. "Uh, hi," he said, looking the man outside the door over.

He recognized him from the Otherworld. How could he not?

"I expect you've got some questions," he said. "You'd better come in."

"Sit wherever," said Finn, showing Algernon into the office. It was cramped, with paperwork balanced on nearly every available surface that wasn't laden with aging desktop computers. A few stray desk chairs loitered in the center of the office, like sheep without a collie to direct them. "We're slammed right now. Spring trail maintenance, weather's been a ********, and all this paperwork. But enough about why my day sucks. How can I help you?"

Algie held himself very properly straight and did a good job of not bumping or jostling anything too precariously stacked. In fact his last experience had been in other ashdown in the other bookshop when he'd seen his first book-memory.

Which all led again to why he was here.

"Yes, of course I'm sorry to bother you at work," When not frantically searching for his missing --friend-- he was very polite and seemingly mild mannered, "It was the only place I knew to look for you and I was hoping maybe you could answer some questions I had."

Algie adjusted his glasses lightly as he set back into a and placed Heliodora's book on top of his knee, "About Ashdown. Not just.. the other one."

Finn shot Algie a wry look. "Are you kidding me?" he asked. "I'm dying of boredom in here. I have two miles of paperwork to do. You are doing me a kindness, good sir. Also."

He picked up a photo frame on his desk and turned it around, holding it out to show the other man the picture - an exceptionally blonde toddler smiled for the camera, an enormous frog clutched between her hands. "That's my daughter. Ori. She just turned one. I got that picture this morning, have to show it to everyone."

He set the frame down. "Anyway," said Finn. "I'll do my best to help you. Ask away."

Alg leaned into the photo, lips quirking, "Aw look at that-" he chuckled lightly, "She's very cute."

As always some miniscule part of the back of his mind reminded him that somewhere a young teen walked around carrying his own DNA but he could never in a million years claim to be their parent.

"Ah-" Alg shifted the book a bit on his knee, "The truth is that this is Heliodora's book." His hand patted it, "She bought it from my shop and after she disappeared it came back to my possession- returned as it were."

They'd all seen the memory of Heliodora willingly surrendering her foot and it had come from this book. "Here it's just a book on local legends and folklore.." Alg set it up on the table (having to shift papers a bit to find a spot) and tapped the cover, "Inside a passage about Heartbreak Hill is rather drawing." And highlighted. He had the page marked with the book's receipt.

"Could you tell me anything more about it or perhaps other relevant local legends?" A small leather bound notebook was then pulled out and he flipped it open. It was packed with small scribbles.

Finn nodded, taking the book and glancing over the passage in question. "Oh, yeah," he said. "Everyone knows that one if they grow up around here. It's like Pocahontas, but with less statutory rape and more starcrossed tragedy. White dude shipwrecks in Ipswich, White dude meets Indian Princess, White dude drowns. That's the cliff notes, anyway. The book's got a pretty fair retelling, from what I can tell."

"If you take the train up to Ipswich, you can see the princess's gravestone, so, I mean, as far as local legends go, it rings pretty true," he added, handing the book back. "Jury's out on whether she was actually a princess or if it's just embellishment. Like, if you want to get into the ghost story, her spirit's still waiting for her drowned love to return - but that's probably bullshit. I mean, it's ******** Ipswich."

The Otherworld, the hub of all things magical in the Boston metropolitan area, did not extend to Ipswich. He'd tried.

"There's nothing magical in ******** Ipswich," said Finn. "You try to go there in the Otherworld, you start to feel like a boiled lobster."

"But, like, if it means anything to you, it's more likely to be true than ******** man door hand hook car door."

Algie, in the grand scheme of things even established as he was, was a newcomer for Ashdown. New England, and even less specifically America, were hardly spheres of expertise for him when it came to local stories and ingrained native bias. He'd done his best to read up, and he'd read this book cover to cover in the last couple of weeks, but after having been to other ashdown he was still puzzled how getting this book- reading about the old stories- was connected to Heliodora going there and staying there.

"What about the tribes?" Algie leaned forward, adjusting his glasses over very green eyes, and blinking down at the cover. He flipped it open and then, almost too efficiently (not that he noticed) flipped straight to the page he needed and point to highlights of the word Agawam, then again flipped to later page (first flip, first try, but he'd read it so many times), "They are noted here. Are the tribes in any way connected to the- uhrm- magic?"

Finn raised an eyebrow slightly at how easily Algie was able to flip to the pages he needed, but said nothing on the subject. "I mean," he said, "We're living on Wampanoag land. You ever hear of, um, Squanto? His people. They had all of Connecticut, all of Rhode Island, most of Massachusetts, part of Long Island. Nearly got wiped out in the 1670s, but they're still around."

Finn reached around under his desk, and then produced a paper state map. He smoothed it out over the top layer of paperwork. "You want to talk to a real Wampanoag, you've probably gotta go South. They've got a reservation at Aquinnah out on Martha's Vineyard. Decent community in Mashpee. Couple of people in Plymouth. If anyone still lives in Ashdown, I've never met them. They might have some myths about the area, but... I've never heard 'em."

Something crossed his mind. Finn shot up from his desk, crossed the room, and yanked Adoelle's missing poster off the cork board. "Doe's Wampanoag," he said. "So I lied. There are some left in Ashdown - but I'm not sure how talkative her parents are going to be feeling."

"Hmmm mmm hmm..." Algie leaned on a crossed knee, scribbling quickly everything Finn was saying- well the major names and areas at least. He made thoughtful sounds before idly chewing the end of his pen (which was metal and possibly not great to chew on but saved him from ruining a plastic one). Alg didn't think it would be worth going to the places Finn said there was no magic... but perhaps there were loose connections.

Still- something about it had Heliodora spooked when she bought the book, and bought it in a hurry.

"I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable approaching them." Algie frowned. He had no real tangible connection to Doe besides the students had perhaps sat in on a lecture once while checking out the college. It was hardly anything he even remembered. Heliodora's book was closed and his hand smoothed it over again.

"Please, if you could, tell me about books in the other place."

Finn shrugged. "I dunno," he said. "Not much to say. I don't know anything about them." He'd never had reason to check out the library. Until a few days ago, he'd thought the Otherworld was just an oddity. Now he suspected there was something more sinister going on. A bigger storm coming.

"Why?" He asked. "Do you know something about the books?"

Algie probably didn't know how to travel to the Otherworld. Not as easily as Finn did. "I mean," he said, "I can take you back there. Probably. I think. We could check stuff out."

Algie straightened, looking surprised then looking a bit pleased. Not that Finn didn't know something, but more that he did.

"Well Jeremiah and Zac were in the library-" And aside from how they'd described it (sort of indescribable really), he could really only relate what he knew about the books, "-they found that when they opened the books they were shown memories. Of Sunny."

Alg rubbed a hand through his hair, mussing it, though it was short enough that it just sort of fell back into the shape it had been combed into for years, "And when I was there I ended up at my bookshop and saw a different memory. It wasn't Sunny- it was peaceful though." He sighed a moment and ran his hand over the cover, "And this book. Showed us all Heliodora's willing surrender of her foot."

The offer to take Algie there was both exciting and worrying. Wasn't Finn concerned, after what happened with Pax and Heliodora? About the sinister voice?

"I- I'm not sure.." Alg's brow furrowed and fingers drummed lightly on the book cover, "How long have you been able to go there?"

Silverah

Finn didn't need to think very hard about the question. "Since October, 2014," he said, "so almost a year and a half now. Aleksy's been going for about as long, if you know him." It was a coincidence that they'd both started walking between worlds at the same time - wasn't it?

"At first," continued Finn, "I was only going there in dreams. Then, I was going there accidentally. I'd walk through a door and I'd be there. And now I can go back and forth at will. I can find doors in and out just by thinking about it. And my car never runs out of gas. Pretty sure that's related."

"Sunny's not human," he added, after a moment's consideration about the books. "She's super up-front about that. I don't know what she is, exactly, though. Maybe some kind of God."

Things were accelerating, he thought. That was for sure.

"Yes I've met Aleksy.." Algie snorted a bit, adjusting in his seat and glancing at his own hand, "He told me I was incubating.. my power-" The older man shook his head and shrugged. In retrospect Aleksy hadn't been wrong, that he'd had to wait until things happened, and they had happened. He still wasn't sure he had a power.

"Sunny is something," Algie sighed then, relaxing a bit more as the conversation went on, not as stiff and inquisitory as he rubbed his face a moment under his glasses, "I've made a couple deals with her."

A couple.

"I just feel like there has to be some way to help on this side." Algie's fingers curled around the edge of the book again, "It started here, with the kids, there have to be reasons and a trail to follow."

silverah

"Aleksy sees things," replied Finn, rearranging some papers on his desk. "And it's harmless to make deals with Sunny as long as you don't leave any loopholes open. I bring her kreteks, she never lies to me. It's a simple exchange. I wouldn't try to make any complicated bargains with her, though. Too much space to get ******** over."

He shook his head.

"It started there," said Finn. "In the Otherworld. You heard Pax. It's older than civilization on this continent. It didn't start with the kids. Not by a long shot. It started in the Otherworld, thousands and thousands of years ago. The only place you're going to find answers is there."

"Yes but the kids didn't start there. They are our kids." The town, not his obviously, "And as far as I am to assume, it hasn't just been abducting people left and right. I'm sure Jeremiah would have mentioned a massive police department cover up of ancient serial kidnappings."

Algie flipped his hand a bit, dismissive of the topic rather swiftly. "You are probably right about going there but I'm not sure I'm ready right now." This second. "If you don't mind can I take your number and I'll reach out to you if I need anything?"

Need anything- code for 'walk me into another dimension'.
