Aleksy had a set schedule for trimming his hair, much like he did for anything else. Every three weeks, like clockwork, he went to Maverick and got the sides of his undercut shaved down. It was nice, since he was rather fond of his preferred stylist (Stanley) and rather happy with the freedom to get his hair done professionally.

Only Stanley didn't work weekends, which meant Aleksy always had to show up on lunch break. And it was pouring down rain, which meant Stanley's lunch break had run long, and Aleksy was left waiting. He'd gotten bored with his phone almost instantly, and was now pestering the receptionist.

"Nice tattoos," he said, leaning in to take a closer look at the art on Rabbit's forearm. "Who did them?"

Rabbit was positive he'd seen this guy before, but for the life of him, he couldn't recall where. Here, probably. There were two appointments in the computer for this time, both running late, and if the mysterious man leaning over the counter was one of them, he was most definitely a regular. Not a lot of customers made actual appointments for their first visit to Maverick Stylists.

"Thanks," he replied, just managing to keep his voice from lifting into a question at the end. A lot of people who came in here didn't care for his appearance, some going so far as to start petty verbal arguments as they reluctantly handed over their credit cards. It was as if they couldn't help themselves, and Rabbit let their disapproval wash over him, unwilling to fight back and risk losing his job. His sister was convinced he would snap one day, but rather than trying to convince him to quit before that happened, she almost seemed to be looking forward to when it did.

"Lots of people. Back in Manhattan, though. I haven't gotten anything new since I came here. Do you want any water or... uh... tea?" Technically he was supposed to ask that of everyone who came in, but usually they were in such a hurry that it was unnecessary to play at being a proper host.

Aleksy had been to New York, but his own tattoo had been done piecemeal in stages here in Ashdown. It was difficult to make appointments in Manhattan or anywhere in the five boroughs really when you were only there for field trips. "No, I had coffee before I came."

Also, like, tea was disgusting. Sorry, he didn't make the rules.

He glanced up at the receptionist's face through his bangs. "I'm Aleksy," he said, offering a hand to shake. "You are?"

He took Aleksy's hand, forgetting for a moment that he wasn't on the street somewhere, free to shake all the hands he wanted with no threat to his job.

"Rabbit. Nice to meet you."

Surely it was all right to make the acquaintance of a person who wanted his acquaintance made? This wasn't some grandma he'd forced his introduction on while she was waiting for her perm to set, after all. Still, he glanced over his shoulder at Gloria, turning back with a grin when he saw she was busy.

"So, it's really coming down, huh?"

"Yeah," Aleksy agreed. "I'd expect this in September, but..." He shook his head. "It's ******** March."

Eh, it wasn't like Wednesdays were particularly busy for the flower shop. Especially not the Wednesday before St. Patrick's Day (the worst holiday of the year, if anyone asked Aleksy, which no one did). It was kind of a hurry-up-and-wait day. "So. Rabbit. That name's got to have a story behind it." He was fishing, but he was also so bored...

"Mm." His name did have a story, or at least an explanation, but he didn't particularly feel like sharing it. Even if he had wanted to, he had no idea how to go about it. The last time he'd tried to articulate the birth of Rabbit or whatever, the struggle to keep from embarrassing himself had turned his story incomprehensible. This time he stuck with,

"Yeah. It's kind of stupid. Just a nickname from a while back that stuck."

Only it wasn't stupid and it had never really been a nickname. He thought it best not to mention that Rabbit had been his legal name for twelve years now. Twelve years. Jesus.

He chuckled. "My other name was a little... old." Bennett Vaughn. He sounded like an heir to old money who spent his time drinking lemonade on his mansion's wrap-around porch. "Not that that's bad, I guess. For some people."

Aleksy pursed his lips. "That makes sense," he agreed. If one's nickname stuck, why not go with it? "A friend of mine calls me a little Russian pastry. a*****e." Really, where the hell was Stanley?...

"Growing up, my friends had Communist names," he said. "Revmira. Krasnyi. Svodoba and Zvezde. Then there was my sister and I... Aleksy and Tatiana, like little tsarevitches." He rolled his eyes. "It was embarrassing then. Now everyone is changing their names and we're staying the same."

Little Russian pastry? Not something he would have ever dreamed of calling another person, but... he could see it, he supposed. Aleksy, the little Russian pastry. Rabbit's smile was very small and easy to hide, and he attempted to do so by looking over at the appointments again, fingers scratching at his cheek. Yeah, where was Stanley? He cleared his throat, recovering quickly enough. To be completely honest, had someone called him a dessert, he probably wouldn't have fought it at all, so he was hardly one to talk.

"I think Aleksy's nice. Tatiana too." He knew very little about communism or any common names it might have produced, only that its fall in Russia had come mere months after he'd lost his father and much about the outside world from around that time had been lost to him as well. When he'd stopped mourning long enough to care again, there had been a lot of things he just hadn't bothered to catch up on, despite their rather massive importance to humanity at large. "So, yeah. You got the better end of the deal there." He could pronounce Aleksy at least. What in the hell was a zvezde?

"I should probably go try to find Stanley in the back. He never just wanders off, especially when we're slow. I mean... you know." He was a regular, after all.

"Hold up. I'll be right back."
