i am on the depo contraceptive intection - have only had one dose.

basically i think i am just being paranoid and im sure its nothing but just for future reference anyways - does anyone know if pregnancy tests work while you are on it?

i never got the info leaflet when i had it so i cant read that - i jus wasnt sure how the hormones in the injection affected it.

any advice would be appreciated smile

http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/bcdepo.htm

There's some good information on it and if I recall there are some people in the group who have first hand experience with this. I, myself, have not taken it, but being that it is a hormonal contraceptive, I don't think that it would affect the outcome of OTC pregnancy tests.

If I recall, all the pregnancy tests said only if you are taking fertility medicines will those affect the outcome because it is the HcG hormone they use to detect, which is different from the hormones in contraceptives.

Looking at that second link, I noticed this:
Quote:
Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are common side effects of Depo Provera. After a year of use, many women stop having periods. Lack of a period becomes increasingly common with longer use.

It says noting about the few women who stop having periods within six months of taking the contraceptive.
I'm only saying this, because when I startd on it, I had one period within a week of taking it for about three days, and haven't ahd any since. I've had three injections of it so far. It's just nice to know that in some cases, you can stop having periods right from the first injection smile

Quote:
Women can start Depo Provera 6 weeks after giving birth.
I was told to wait at least eight weeks before I could have it confused Difference of opinion from nurses I suppose...

I have got one question though. What's the risk percentage of the bone density weakening and getting osteoporosis? I'm asking because if it's a high risk, I think I might rethink my contraceptive preferences

I know that especially in young women the use of devo does increas the riskc or things such as osteoperosis but things such as the pill have equally concerning potential side affects.

I take a high level three a day calcium supplement. For me it's worth it for the extra backup contraception (I still use condoms as well) and the fact that my periods have stopped altogether!

I was on the pill (microgynen-30) before I had my first child. I have tried over and over again to start it up again but when you have so much else to contend with - nappies, bottles, being tired etc etc - i just could never remember to take it regularly. And that makes it a pointless intake of medication as taking it irregularly just means its not working.

I've read a few things and am still not totally clear on the effects the injection has on pregnancy tests. I have decided that my approach will be to always do one before i have an injection, just to be sure.

Oh something I wanted to touch on briefly. I read the mention of calcium supplements. Be sure if you are taking calcium supplements you are also taking Vitamin D! It helps with absorbtion. That's a HUGE flaw in some of the supplements, they don't contain it and you will essentially urinate the calcium out.

Thanks, my nurse told me about taking the calcium but didn't mention the vitamin D.

I took depo for awhile. I hated it because it made me blow up like I was preggers. Took me a year to get the weight off. Irony is, as soon as I was back down to the weight I wanted - I got preggers eek It was a good thing, though! I have my boy now.

I was on Depo Provera for about a year and a half, and I loved it.

However, the side effects are pretty serious. They had an article about it on the news (and on the internet) about a 33 year old woman (somewhere around there) who had been taking Depo for years and years, and because she somehow didn't know about the bone density and calcium problems, she had the bones "of a 55 year old woman" according to the article.

So the recommended time for taking Depo is 2 years or less, because after that point the effects from the Depo (calcium absorption problems and bone density decreasing) may be irreversible.

I have osteoporosis running on both sides of my family, but took it because it's so effective against pregnancy (99.7%). The only major side effect I had from it was a massive period (lasting 2 weeks, heavy bleeding and cramps the whole time) at the end of every 12 week period, so I eventually got my shots every 10 weeks.

I also lost my period after several shots, and that was a nice bonus as well.

For those trying to get pregnant after being on Depo, it stays in the body anywhere from 2 - 6 months, and longer for some. Women aren't "infertile" so to speak, but they have a harder time getting pregnant as long as the hormone is still in their body. I've been off it for almost a month, and I switched to the Patch on the day I was supposed to get my next shot, so I've got lots of hormones floating around in my body. xd

When I took depo I ended up getting my period for two months. I went off. And didn't get my period. when I consulted a doctor she said that when you go off of depo you usually wont get your period for six months... I went five and was pissed I didn't get the extra month without it.

I think a pregnancy test would work.

Are you worried about missing a period? Yeah, you can miss your period on Depo-provera. Or get what I got, I bled the entire three months.

And I gained a lot of weight. :/

I finally lost it but now I have to gain weight again.
