What should have been a fairly easy going day turned sour. Otto showed up to begin his duty of scouting the island, only to find his partner for the next few hours was someone he did not particularly care for. At all.He made zero effort to hide his distaste, as his lip curled and a groan of annoyance growled in his throat. "Not you." He bemoaned openly. Baneful just quoting so u find it~

If there was one thing Lawrence hated more than anything else in the world it was open rudeness. It was one thing to take everything someone owned with a polite and cordial smile and a thank you, but even doing nice things with a coarse and rude manner negated everything. And it just so happened that when it came to rudeness on the island Otto had become in many ways Lawrence's posterchild. The boy was in want of a good grounding and had been for the last few years, his sass costing him his precious hair and eyebrows at one point and his quick witted comments a little of his dignity on several occaisions.
Suffice to say he was less than pleased to see that no only was he expected to walk around the godforsaken island but to do so with the other man.
"The feeling is mutual." he stated sharply. "I should prefer almost anyone else as a partner, yet here we are."
He was bundled up against the cold, as always dressed in an impractical amount of white and he gestured with his hand in the direction of the path. "I expect at the very least for you to be competent at fighting, should we run into any dangers." Though to be frank the worst danger he expected to encounter was Caelius on a rampage.

He huffed through his nose, his mouth too busy making a tight line across his features. The man reeked of arrogance. At the very least, the man was shorter, a point that for Otto was a rarity he never got to boast about. Then again, height difference meant very little here; the man was cold, infuriating and dangerous.
He walked forward despite not wishing to follow through with Lawrence's gesture. He kept a good few feet between them. Otto himself was dressed in baggy clothes a size or two too big for him. Normal. Orange hoodie, thick light blue sweat pants, white skater shoes, and a black puffy winter jacket. Unlike Lawr's limited colour palette, Otto's clothes tended to be much more vibrant, and in the case of his hoodie filled with various patterns and designs in a very punk rock motif.
"Competent. Ish." He replied flippantly in response to battle prowess. His key held back his strength, but he had at least years of combat experience to keep himself alive and fighting. He merely felt the need to keep Lawr on edge with his unhelpful answer.
He felt distracted and pulled two ways. Eyes on the road. Eyes to the distance. Eyes on Lawrence.

A smirk tugged at his features as Otto moved ahead and he followed behind, rather happy to maintain the distance they had established and to use the opportunity to observe the other man. Otto was in Lawr's opinion a bit of a ball of coiled energy, even his normal surly attitude seeming on the whole an utterly exhausting thing to maintain.
"Oh only ish?" he said with a playful sort of edge. "Suppose I shouldn't expect prowess from a boy."
Walking was rendered a little more tolerable with the potential for irritating Otto. "I suppose it explains your face though." he said, tapping the corresponding spot on his own face to the scars on Otto's "Where did you get those? Fall off a skateboard?"

One tick to Otto's tolerance meter.
Otto looked back at Lawr just to glare at him. "Ain't a ********' kid, Old Man!" He growled and turned away, adding under his breath "I'm twenty-one already... Geez..." He tried not to look back again, as he was beginning to see that Lawr was intentionally trying to garner a reaction from him. It was always easy to do, as Otto hated not responding, or defending himself against such attacks.
"No." He grumbled aloud.
He did not bother to elaborate on the origin of his facial scars. Pointedly so. He did, however, absently pull more of his bangs over that side of his face without truly realizing he was doing so.

"Twenty one?" Lawrence repeated, deliberately louder. "Wouldn't that make you only just old enough to drink in America?" This seemed to amuse him, enough at least to sidestep the comment about him being old. Compared to Otto, perhaps he was, so it held less sting than usual. "I am surprised you didn't get recruited with your mother in tow. Perhaps she'd have taught you a few manners."
Lawrence was glad at the very least that the snow had died back and though he was still somewhat shivery, it was not as overwhelming as it had been with his shield starved into submission. He noted Otto's gesture and decided to keep guessing.
"Shaving accident?" he asked. "Puberty was probably rather recent for you I suppose."

"Legally, yes." He muttered back. It was probably best to withheld just how long he'd been on this island, or he might let slip he'd never even made it past the equivalent of a grade eleven education. His age seemed to be something of a fun point to poke at so far. "I got manners. Just ain't wasting 'em on the likes of you." Which could be true, though anyone who knew Otto truly would likely laugh at his statement. Manners never seemed to take any residence in his understanding of social rules. Not enough to put them into play aside from 'yes sir' when Caelius or other leads were involved.
He let out a shaky breath of irritation. Lawrence was going to keep guessing until Otto broke, he supposed. "From a fight." He barked back. "In the Haunted House."

Lawrence seemed to be pleased by this grudging admittance from Otto, though part of him was slightly jealous of his youth, thinking that it should have been in his more deserving hands while Otto could do with a few years to perhaps even him out. "I sincerely doubt you are capable of manners in any capacity, to those deserving of them or not. I don't think you were raised so much as left to wander."
"A fight." he said "Suppose you were not lying about the mediocrity. Fighting what?"

Otto laughed. A laugh that was heavily laced with contemptment. "Left to wander." He repeated aloud. He supposed that was true, in cases his parents were too busy for him; ie most cases. When they noticed him outside those times, he wished he was invisible again.
"Fighting a thing." He said back. "I dunno what it was exactly. But it had claws and the power to possess people." And he'd been lucky to survive it at all. "It was good times. You should totally go find it and give it a hug." In fact, he insisted on it.

Lawrence looked very interested at the concept of possession, seeming to zero in on the idea. "That does not actually sound all that bad." he said. "Perhaps a little dramatic on your part. I am sure I could give it a hug and not earn myself any injuries." The fact that such creatures existed was further confirmation that what he sought might actually exist out there in the world, creatures which could not only possess another being but switch conciousness from one brain to another. Certainly possession itself was likely different but every strange beast confirmed was another step closer to what he desired.
"Suppose your failures are why you have been relegated to patrols." He daintily stepped over a branch in the path and continued. "I of course am kept here for secret reasons, given how important I am."

"You try that out and lemme know how it goes." That creature was hardly the huggy type, unless you wanted to get stabbed. Well, Lawrence seemed like he thought himself invincible to all things. Let him think it all he wanted.
His failures, huh? To be honest, he didn't mind simple things like patrol. It was easy, didn't require his mind, and held very little responsibilities. Maybe that in itself proved himself a failure as a whole.
"Wow, you're just Mr. Perfect, huh?" He drawled dryly, "I have a hard time believin' you're any kind of important." Maybe he had some use to Deus. Why else would a guy with such a bad reputation still be allowed to frolic with freedom?

"Couldn't go as badly as it likely did with you." he said with a sniff. He wasn't about to go hugging anything dangerous any time soon, but it was endlessly enjoyable to harass Otto about his shortcomings. His tone at least wasn't quite as cutting as it often was, not trying to push Ottos temper too far. Though he doubted the other man would snap, it was still a little much to risk when he weilded a rather intimidating weapon and outranked him regardless of age.
"Yes." he said. "Perfect is an excellent word to define what I am, I was simply designed this way." he smirked. "Rather important too frankly, I am only on island because of a little bit of medical leave. Nothing significant. At your age I was still in school."

He was just goading him. Otto reminded himself once again not to read too much into his jabs and quips. He focused on passing trees and boring fields instead.
"I dunno. I've met way more perfect people here than you." Otto grumbled, still pointedly avoiding looking back at the arrogant man behind him. "N' just what kinda medical leave does God's perfect idiot have, anyway?" He liked to imagine it was something awful like an embarrassing rash or something.
"Yeah, well, they ain't got school here." Not that he'd attend if they did. He had zero interest in it whatsoever.

"You simply aren't a good judge of perfection is all, which is to be expected in someone who does not even possess the most basic of education." he smiled beatifically. "As far as medical leave, I do not wish to discuss that at the moment." In fact there was nothing that he wished to discuss less if it came down to it, he wasn't even in the mood to make up some exciting lie, so irritated by even the idea of his being trapped on this island.
"Perhaps if they had school you might grow out of your perpetually surly little mire of puberty. Then again, perhaps not."

"Maybe you're right, cause thems a lotta big words yer pukin' at me, n' I can't even begin to understand your point from'em." He smirked to himself, delightfully accepting his role as uneducated if only for that remark alone. He hated being called stupid, simply because he was afraid it was true. As such, his only means of defence was to pretend he didn't care. He sure as Hell didn't know how to refute it without proof.
