Mist Hunter
The Miss Taken Tower

General Information
As the general, jack-of-all trades division, the Mist Hunter training course is a combination of the other divisions' training challenges and also one of the more complicated. The goal of this course is to rescue the princess in the tower. Below her, you'll find yourself confronted with a number of shadowling attackers, and beyond them, a room of only slightly deadly traps. But even should you reach her location, you still need to pick the lock on the manacles holding her in place. Unskilled fiddling with the locks will prove unhealthy for both the princess and yourself. And once that's done, you need to make your way back down through the traps and shadowlings, defending the princess the whole way.

The Miss Taken Tower is one of the most challenging and frustrating courses available.

If you fail: your princess dies, and you are quite possibly KO'd. Senior hunters are observing and will make with a timely rescue as needed.

If you win: the princess will adore you for the rest of her exceedingly brief existence. Peen points for 100% health for you and the Princess, shadowlings fought, going for consecutive rescues.

On one particular day but for no particular reason, Finn got up at some ungodly hour, showered, got dressed, had breakfast (toast with peanut butter), and then hovered over Ripley and said.

"Get up. We're going to go do the mist tower this morning."

Ripley hadn't woken up throughout all of Finn's morning routine. He remained sound asleep on his side of the bed, unbothered by it all. The day before had been a long and exhausting one that had ended in him getting back too late - or rather, too early in the morning. When he finally did fall asleep, he was out for the count.

Of course, that was until the looming presence above the bed had other ideas. The sudden voice startled him, but all it took was one look up at the blurry shape above him, and he put his head back down into his pillow, eyes closed again.

"Why." He grumbled, still half asleep.

Finn was fully aware of how late his partner had gotten to bed, but Finn, of course, really didn't care. It wasn't his problem. It was Ripley's problem. Still, as he stood over the other man, gazing down at him as he burrowed back into his pillow, he did feel at least one tiny ounce of compassion.

Sighing, he knelt down at the side of the bed, folded his arms over it's edge, and rested his chin there. "Because, you need the training. You're a god damn walking catastrophe. And I need the entertainment." He smirked, and lifted his head up to lean forward and place a kiss on whatever part of Ripley's face he could reach that wasn't smooshed into a pillow.

"Thirty minutes." he leaned back, and stood back up. "I'll give you thirty more minutes, but that's ******** it."

Ripley grumbled something that was likely as non-committal as it was rude, if it weren't simply a garbled, unintelligible mess. Finding a spot to kiss at all was astonishing, between his hair, the sheet, and the pillow itself. Still, Finn managed it, as he always did - and even in a sleep deprived, grumpy state, he was remotely thankful for it. At least he still had his faculties to appreciate these small, simple moments.

Still, the kiss only earned Finn a second small grumble, but this one would have been a lot less rude and a smidgen happy, had it been coherent.

"Forty." He muttered, followed by something about a REM cycle, but not long after that he was out like a light anyway.

"This isn't a ******** negotiation." He muttered, frowning down at the man that he suspected couldn't even hear him anymore anyways, before turning, about to walk away, when he stopped instead.

"Fine, forty, but if you aren't up by the time I get back, I'm dumping a cold bucket of water over your head, and I'll be pissed off with you for getting my-our, bed wet." He said, louder, though again there was really no telling if Ripley was even listening to him.

Oh well, warning given regardless. Finn finished his turn, and strode across the room, grabbing a pack of cigarettes off of the counter before heading out the door, not slamming it but not bothering to click it shut lightly out of courtesy, either.

It would be forty-five minutes before he returned. He was obviously feeling incredibly charitable that morning.

Ripley did not hear a word that had been said after he fell back asleep. Not a single one.

Forty-five minutes later though, the sound of the door opening, followed by the sound of Finn's footsteps - something he had come to recognize right away - roused him. With little to say and a lot to wake up for, Ripley simply sat up in bed, letting the sheet fall around his waist, and stretched his arms above his head. Scarred fingers were pushed through his messy white hair, smoothing back only a portion of it.

Then, with a sigh, he reached out to pat the side table for his glasses.

"Why the Mist Tower?" He asked, belatedly. There were so many options, it seemed weird to pick something that was directed to neither of them.

He wasn't even out of bed yet. Truthfully, Finn wasn't even surprised, but at least the other man was in the process and no longer laying down, so that gained him a little leeway and tempered Finn's frustration.

He clicked the door shut behind him and made his way over to the bedside, not answering Ripley's question right away but instead taking a moment to appreciate what he saw, what was his, even if he was annoyed.

"Well good ******** morning to you too, sugar cake." His gaze was as cold and hard as ever, though Ripley was probably used to that by now.

Finally he sighed, and ran a hand through his hair, "Because I couldn't pick just one thing by itself that you were terrible at." He mocked, "Seemed like working on them all at once was a logical choice. Also, it's the only training course I haven't tried yet." He shrugged off that last part, as if it were barely a reason at all, and the other reason was much more important.

To be fair, under the circumstances it was implied that he simply had to be awake in forty minutes. There had been no mention of actually being up and ready - and if there was, he was too unconscious to hear it. Which wasn't his problem, really. The only reason he had gotten up so fast in the first place was that he still had flash backs to Finn's every ten minutes promise. Usually, he was on time. Punctual to a fault. He made a pretty good alarm clock in these instances. Ripley had yet to figure out that he had been granted an extra five minutes.

"Hilarious." A joke at his expense. Awesome. Original. He didn't even reply to the oh-so-charming good morning, either. He simply sat there, waking himself up, and giving a yawn. On the whole, he couldn't argue with the all at once notion, because that was what the Mist Tower was. All the training courses to fail, in one easy shot. One stop shopping, really.

"Alright." He said, already exasperated and on the tail end of a yawn. "Don't get your hopes up." This was going to go badly, as it always did. Still, he stood up, fixed his sweat pants, and headed towards their bathroom. He wasn't going to shower; there was no point if they were going through training. All he did was brush his teeth, wash his face, and then left the room to get changed into comfortable clothing.

If he was going to go suffer and embarrass himself on purpose, he was at least going to be in comfortable and expendable clothing while doing it. It didn't take him long to get ready, and once he was, he levelled Finn with a blank, but vaguely unhappy stare. He hated training so much.

"Ready when you are." There was a small and expectant pause. "Actually. First." He announced, taking half a step closer to be able to lean in for quick kiss. "Good morning, jackass."

"It wasn't really meant to be funny. You are actually that terrible." His smile was as condescending as it could possibly be, as if he practiced in the look in the mirror (and he probably did) until he had perfected it. It could only last so long, however, because the more exasperated Ripley got, the more amused Finn found himself, and the smile was quickly replaced by a grin as he watched the other man drag himself out of bed.

"That's the spirit!" He called after Ripley as crossed the room to the bathroom, chuckling to himself as he assumed a position near the door, leaning against the wall, to wait.

When Ripley was ready to go, he pushed himself off of the wall, hand going to the door knob, but pausing when his partner spoke, turning back towards him to receive his good morning, at last. Their was an appreciative hum in the back of his throat at the kiss that was far too quick for his liking, and his hand reached for one of Ripley's, fingers threading through his, giving a small squeeze.

"It'll be fine. After all, I'll be there to put you back together when you inevitably end up in the infirmary." He grinned again, and pulled Ripley in for another kiss, if the other man would allow it.

"Didn't ask for your input." He reminded Finn, rubbing his eye with the heel of his palm. There was no need to look at him to see the condescending smile; he could imagine it very well himself, in all it's practiced glory. It was true he was terrible, and that terrible to boot. There was nothing he could really do about that, unfortunately. If there was, it would have happened a long time ago. As it were, he seemed to be getting worse.

The spirited call was met with a lazy, one-fingered wave over his shoulder. He also briefly considered taking an abnormally long time to get ready, just to spite him. The only reason he didn't, was because he just wanted to get this damn thing over with. There was a small victory in the brief kiss and the appreciative hum that followed. His fingers threaded with Finn's, returning the brief squeeze.

"Not as comforting as you think it is." Ripley grumbled, despite leaning up for the second kiss anyway. "Also, still fairly sure that's still a conflict of interest." Somehow, it must have been. Finn patching him up after forcing him to the infirmary in the first place by making him go brutal training? That had to be some form of law-breaking taboo. Attempted murder did come to mind, but this was Deus; rules here were very flimsy.

"Alright." Ripley sighed a long-suffering sigh. "Let's get this over with." He said, after leaning away from Finn, even letting go of his hand so instead put both of them in his own pockets.

"You're so grumpy this morning. Very sexy. I have half a mind to drag you back to bed, instead." Finn teased, though in a very deadpan manner, allowing Ripley to pull his hand away, while he himself reached for the door. "It's almost as if you don't really appreciate me or my concern for you." He held the door open for the other man and then followed him out into the hallway.

"You didn't eat yet." He noted, "Want to stop by the cafeteria quickly?"

"Training first." As tempting as it was to avoid it by going back to bed - which, while exhausting, would likely end in a nap anyway - he really, really wanted to get this over with as soon as possible. In fact, it was that same mindset that he shook his head again, once, when offered the trip to the cafeteria.

"Won't make a difference." He sighed. Eating in the morning or when he was tired was difficult, and it would have about the same affect as him not eating at all. "Food later." After Finn patched him back up, anyway. "Training first."

"Suit yourself, sweetie." Finn flashed the other man a grin and may have also put some distance between himself and Ripley to avoid any hits, kicks, or slaps that might be directed at him. "Princess rescuing first, then I get to play doctor on you, then food, then I get to play doctor on you again,"

He picked up that pace to retain the distance he'd already put between them.

"And then I have to actually work in the infirmary for the rest of the day, and you'll be free of me for a few hours." Which was, ultimately, why Finn had insisted on getting such an early start, despite Ripley having gotten so little sleep. Their schedules often clashed, but Finn was more than willing to let his partner suffer in sleep depravity so that they could spend this quality time together.

------------

After some amount of travel across the grounds and likely a lot of snarky banter, the two of them stood at the base of the tower. Finn summoned Trynt, the long lance shifting from it's industrial piercing in his ear to a formidable hand held weapon.

"Would you rather I take the lead on this, or do you want me to watch your rear?"

There was an obvious joke in there somewhere, but it was really too easy to act on.

"To be more thorough, I imagine." He commented idly to the second, not-at-all subtle second round of Doctor. The sudden change of pace made him smirk, though. Unfortunately for Finn, it seemed all Ripley had any interest in today was dirty looks and snarky remarks. There would be no actual hitting, no matter how often the thought crossed his mind. For a moment he simply watched Finn walk away, lingering a few steps slower before moving just that little bit more to catch up.

"I'll probably see you there, too." It was a grim addition to the conversation, and delivered just the same. "Haunted House duty in the afternoon." He added after a moment, for clarification as well as to continue the conversation.

------

"You've watched enough." Ripley said, distracted by the way Finn summoned Trynt. It had been one thing to know where they were going, but it was an entirely different beast to be here, and understand what it was they needed to do. There was no sigh or grumble, no show of discontent as he summoned his own weapon. Wilhelm was summoned, shifting from the black-and-white watch he wore on his wrist to the large, horse-pommeled sword in Ripley's hand. The horse's mane created a strange and almost cumbersome looking guard, and the slight cracks that adorned the weapon seemed deeper now, longer and more prominent. The runes, which used to glow bright, also seemed rather dim in comparison. He didn't even look at the weapon, knowing too well how it looked, because it was just a physical representation of how it felt to him; wrong. Weak, somehow. Docked of what strength it had before.

"It's my turn." His free hand extended in invitation, allowing him to go first.
