High school students were prime candidates for a job that mostly involved carrying things with minimal handling of cash money. (Aleksy did not trust children with cash money, and that was what high school students were: children.) He'd seen a few different styles of 'personable', from a prim too-collected student-council type to a shyly stammering mathletics nerd, but still nothing that seemed like he could be certain of. No one with an easily-read personality or a legible face, two traits Aleksy very much wanted in anyone entrusted with his reputation. So the interviewing process went onward, ever onward, as onerous as it was. Aleksy sighed and cut an errant leaf from its stem. The next girl, Alexis something, she'd be here soon. Maybe she'd have what he was looking for, and if not... there was still a giant pile of papers to get through.

To be fair, Alexis needed a job. Alexis really needed a job. They hadn't wanted to deal with flowers, but how complicated could flowers be? You watered them, they looked pretty, they made nice decoration, and then they died. The fact Alexis somehow managed to kill any plant they took care of conveniently escaped their attention. Besides, from what they'd managed to find out about the owner, he seemed persnickety. A kindred spirit. And there was no way the profit margins were great on flowers, anyways. Alexis had made halfway of an effort to look nice. (Considering it was Alexis, that mostly meant they didn't immediately look like a feral child, but every bit counted.) Blues and greys and a quick combthrough of their hair -- it'd be enough. Besides. It was delivery. Who was going to give two shits when their competition for the job was probably high schoolers? At least Alexis could get around without parental aid. They shoved open the door without even knocking, because it wasn't like Aleksy didn't know they were coming anyways, and shoved their hands in their pockets. "Spektor? I'm Alexis Tucker; 'm scheduled around now for an interview." Nailed it.

"Mr. Spektor," corrected Aleksy, already irritated by the presumption of familiarity. He didn't know this kid. He didn't really particularly want to know this kid. Or any kids! Honestly he was just fine by himself except he wasn't, and... ughh, ughhh. Ugh. Aleksy closed his eyes, and when he opened them again they were pitch-black pits in a white face but they weren't openly disdainful, so that was a win, right? "How did you hear about the opening," he asked, pulling a legal pad out of the top counter-drawer. "School newspaper?"

"Already graduated, Mr. Spektor," Alexis shrugged, the vaguest hint of a smile pulling at their lips. "'ve got my ways." Vagueness was appealing, right? Usually people didn't like it when they were overshared at. "Friend of a friend." Then again, vagueness was probably a lifesaver, because Alexis wouldn't so often go far enough to say they had friends. Ew. But it probably sounded appealing. Maybe. They weren't really sure what interviewers usually looked for. "Guessin' you've got a bunch of kids applying?" ******** kids. Brats, all of them. Alexis was maybe a few years out of proper 'brathood', but that was more than enough.

"So... the internet?" Aleksy arched an eyebrow. He didn't trust vaguery. "I do have kids like yourself applying," he said, emphasis on the like you. "It's not a glamorous job you're here for." He sniffed, at least a little disdainfully, and leaned back in his chair. "Which of those are you here for, anyway? Making deliveries, taking them, what?" He arched an eyebrow, just a tic, a trick he'd picked up from his twin. "Or do you want to clean the store? I don't think you're the type."

"Give or take, yeah," Alexis replied, tensing when the 'like yourself' was stated - "I'm nineteen. Unlike them, 'm a legal adult." There was a (thankfully brief) flash of teeth. They were very nice teeth! Very aesthetically pleasing. "I'm good at hands-on work, 'n I have a bike. And you've got me right: I don't clean much." This was honestly going about as well as they'd presumed it would. Alexis was incredible at social interaction. Why weren't people lining up to hire them?

"If you're a legal adult, why are you here," asked Aleksy, but he was shuffling papers and didn't really expect an answer. "Tell me about your employment history. Have you lived in Ashdown long?"

"I'm here because I need a job," Alexis replied, voice carefully balanced and even. "I've been living in Ashdown for about four months, and I've mostly done physical labor prior. Paper routes. Being that one a*****e who hangs out at the animal shelters and badgers people to wash their goddamn hands." They tried not to betray any irritation. It wasn't working. People never washed their goddamn hands.

"And what are you doing here? Are you attending college at Rider-Waite?" Aleksy tapped the nib of his pen against a stack of post-its. He'd never attended college himself, saw no reason to discriminate against someone who thought their path lay elsewhere, but he couldn't abide a lack of direction. It was one thing to decide that college offered no benefit; it was another entirely to just have no idea of where to go.

"When I have the cash." Alexis' voice was curt. This was something they'd said many times before. "No point 'n goin' to college if I can't pay my way." To be entirely fair, the move hadn't been particularly well thought out -- but they'd wanted out, away, anywhere-but-there. Ashdown had been the best solution on short notice: nobody knew them, here. And there were plenty of pretty things.

Aleksy sighed. Job interviews were the best time to be nosy--after all, if he was going to entrust his reputation and livelihood to someone, he needed to know they could be relied on--and there was something just off about this kid. "This wouldn't be a full-time position," he said. "Would you be seeking other work?"

"Perhaps." Alexis gave an aborted little smile, realizing maybe half a second into it they looked like an axe murderer. "I like working. Takes care of my free time. Depends on what hours I'd be doin'. But my schedule's open, y'know?" This time there wasn't any attempt at a smile -- just keen eye contact. "You take what you can get when you don't have much. I'm not going to lie and tell you that you're my ideal boss."
