The hunt for someone to watch the store when Aleksy couldn't was going very, very slowly. Perhaps it would help if Aleksy wasn't giving callbacks to people out of sheer spite? He flipped his pen over his knuckles and gave that the consideration it was due, which was none. He added a few lines to his sketch and turned the paper over. Monica Chavez. He didn't recognize the name, which probably didn't mean anything. He and his sister had moved back to Russia when they were sixteen; any number of people could've moved in or come back or whatever it happened to be. Either way, it was a line in Monica's qualifications that had drawn Aleksy's ire: I know how to be nice to people.Like he didn't??? He was still scowling at the application when the bell over the shop door jingled, and the expression hadn't faded when he looked up. He snapped out, "Yes?"

In all honesty Monica didn't have very high hopes, but she had been getting a little desperate. She was short and - well, okay, she wasn't weak. She was, actually pretty strong for her size. But her size was small, and she was pretty blabby, as humans went. She was far from the ideal grocery store restocker. And most of those waitress jobs or whatever were pretty clear conflicts of interest. Honestly, she liked her primary job, and it'd clearly been fine for when she was on her own. Just... Okay, okay. Don't blame Corgi, Monica. Let's go into this with a positive attitude. She'd dressed up for this largely because that was what you were supposed to do for an interview - right? A nice blazer, a bright ruffly blue skirt (you couldn't take the color out of Monica Chavez, sensible heels (hers were usually hidden in high tops, but when you were five even you didn't have a lot of options). Sure, she was trying to say. She didn't know anything about plants (they were green! Green was nice!), but she was professional! And she had socialization skills, which might possibly translate to the ability make sales or help customers out or something. Right? She was pretty good with words. She was a food writer. She had this in the bag. Okay, pep talk done. Into the - er - into the shop it was. She pulled the door open confidently and flashed a bright smile at the guy inside. "Hey! I'm Monica Chavez. I applied for front-of-house?"

Aleksy scowled in response to the smile. Yeah, she seemed nice. The corners of her eyes crinkled up with smiley sincerity in a way that got Aleksy's back up, even more than it already was (even more than it always was, since frankly his back was always up and his mood was always sour). She'd dressed well, which was a relief, but still. Aleksy was nice to people! Aleksy was so nice to people. He took a deep breath, nostrils flaring. Spite is not an acceptable motivator, he thought, but he was so salty about this. "How'd you hear about the opening," he drawled, propping his chin up in his palm. "You look older than most of my applicants."

Older? Well, it was probably true. People who applied for jobs like these were probably more around, well, Corgi's age. She didn't let her apprehension at that show, though. She was still pretty ******** young. Obviously. Or she'd have found a better job by now (she hoped). "I saw a flier at the community center," she shrugged. Well, in all honesty Monica had basically scoured any bulletin board she could find. She spent probably more time at the community center than most, though: there were a lot of cool classes to take there! Classes that you had to...pay...for. Well, she'd be cutting down for a little while, at least. She flashed Aleksy a sunny smile. He was definitely less...um, flowery, than she'd been expecting. Not that she'd been looking for a garden nymph or something like that! Maybe that would give her bonus points, or something. shibrogane many apologies for this delay ahh biggrin !

Okay, that... did make sense. The school did cross-post. "Under your qualifications, you wrote I know how to be nice to people." Aleksy didn't say the conclusion he'd drawn, but it was there in the angry crinkle of his forehead, the tightness of his mouth. "Elucidate."

Haha, okay, so maybe it shouldn't be funny that Monica's potential boss was pissed off this early in the interview. Actually, it should have been an indicator that she should turn around, right now. But the look on his face made it pretty hard to suppress a little smirk. And yet, antagonizing him would only make her application come off as a lie. So she turned the smirk into a full-on beam. "So I'll be up front: I don't have a lot of experience with plants." Well, she'd grown rosemary on her windowsill in college, but that was mostly because she'd been loosely involved in her dorm environmental group. "But I can help make people feel at home. I've been told I'm great at helping indecisive people feel comfortable, and I think I can manage to not drive angry customers away." She finished with a cheeky wink. To be honest, there were not really many other points in her favor, though.

"If the customer is angry, you're not doing your job," grumbled Aleksy, but so far he couldn't find fault with Monica's reasoning. "Tell me about your availability. Do you have experience handling money and working at the register?"
