Something woke her early in the morning, before the sun had even begun to rise. The mare shivered, trying to cover herself more fully with wings that no longer worked the way they once did. Moving them caused some pain, but she’d begun to learn how to ignore it. It was difficult, and the other pain, found in her memories, was harder to shove off. Her breath shortened and the contracting of her chest had Al closing her eyes tight and chanting softly to herself. It had all just been an accident. All just an…accident.
Blinking slowly, Al let her eyes come into focus on the dark landscape around her. It was always warm here, though not quite the same way as the desert. Here it felt more like the land itself was in pain. She inhaled deeply, smelling the constant ashy scent of the area. And the blood. The ground here was soaked with it. Just the thought of it made her shudder and sent pain jolting through her wings.
Sleep wasn’t returning today. As much as she wished it would stay. Sighing as she shifted her weight, it turned into a groan as Al managed to get to her feet. She gave her body a great shake, sending a few feathers cascading to the ground before slowly settling her wings along her back and looking around. A few of the herd was milling about. She just didn’t feel like socializing with any of them. Although… there was one person she wouldn’t mind chatting with. Ears perking up a little, the mare looked around for the stallion that had been keeping her company more and more as of late.
Not seeing him right away, Al decided to go grab a small morning breakfast before anyone else woke. She really preferred to eat in peace while she had the chance. For once the rest of the herd was awake, it would be nothing but chaos until well into the night.

The night had been a long one. So many distractions and he still couldn’t have the heart of that pale mare that mama had brought in. No matter how much he tried to beg, it was still a no. Now he had to pretend to like the mare. And get minions out of her. Though, he wasn’t really sure how that was supposed to happen. All he knew was that he had to make that stupid mare fall for him. Or like him enough that something special would happen.
Reaper rolled over until his head thunked against something hard. He snorted and quickly scrambled to get to his feet. The large stallion blinked stupidly at the rock he’d smacked into. Huh. He didn’t remember falling asleep over here… Maybe Conq had rolled him over. Or Des. Oh well.
Stretching and yawning widely, he ground his teeth together while looking around. The sun was out, though not very high. Must not be late morning yet. Damn. He’d woken up earlier than he wanted….oh look. There was that mare! The one he had to like. She was secluding herself from the others, quietly watching everything that went on. Sneezing, Reaper waltzed over to her, nocking a few of the idiots that got in his way out of his path until Alarion spotted him. It was funny to see the change in her expression. What a stupid creature!
“You’re awake.” He stated the obvious. Casual conversation was definitely not his thing. Or speaking really. “Did… sleep go good?”

A small laugh bubbled up from Al. She wasn’t sure what had drawn this stallion to her, but the more time she spent around him, the more she was drawn to him. There was something odd about him. And not just the way he spoke. She’d learned from the time she’d spent with him, that his mind worked a little slower than usual. But she enjoyed his company very much.
“Good morning, Reaper.” She said sweetly, and a little shyly. “Yes. Sleep was good. I woke up a little earlier then I wanted.” But it had been nice. “How are you? Did you sleep well?”
Maybe it was because he didn’t seem to mind her wings. Or the way she looked. For her confidence had plummeted since the accident. Especially with flying being almost impossible. But Reaper never seemed bothered. In fact he was always so focused on her. And only her at times.

Ugh. Ew. Sweet talk. This was so dumb. Why did he have to do this? Reaper tilted his head a little as he attempted to figure out how to answer her. An uncomfortable amount of time passed between them before he mumbled a response. “Good sleep.” He shook his head. “Woke too early also.”
His fiery gaze slowly traveled down her body, stopping at her chest. And the beating heart he knew was just out of reach. Oh how he dreamed of just ripping it out and swallowing it whole! He even began to drool a little, completely blocking out whatever the stupid creature he was talking to was saying. It would be so easy and quick! He’d be gracious enough to make her death quick…
“Want to walk?” He asked suddenly, a little eagerness coloring his tone. Maybe he could get away with it where no one could see. Especially not Conq. His sister would scold him. And he didn’t want to upset her. Mama, he could handle. But Conq? He looked up to her.

A sweet smile rose to her features as she nodded in understanding. “You too? Guess the day just wanted us not to miss anything.” She gave a small laugh and took a step closer to the large stallion. “At least my day is getting a little better.” She hoped anyways.
Being asked to take a walk with him had her heart beating just a little faster. This wasn’t uncommon for him to ask. But something in his gaze seemed almost different. And it made her stomach flip flop.
“S-Sure. We can go for a walk. I’d like that.” It also gave them both an excuse to avoid any fights that might break out between Lux and her daughter. Or having to deal with any of them period. She didn’t understand it. How could Reaper be so much different from his sisters? He was slow, yes. But there was almost a childish nature to him. That made him much more entertaining to be around then Conqueror or Desdemona.
“Shall we go? Before anyone decides they need us to help with something?”

Oh. Right. They needed to go on a walk. So that there were no prying eyes. Or someone that could ruin his plans. Wait…what were his plans again? Reaper didn’t move right away, staring at Alarion stupidly. What had he wanted to do? Walk. They were going on a walk. Yes! That was it. Walking.
“Yes. We go.” He nodded and then took the lead, walking slow so she could keep up and stay at his side. Which was nice because then he didn’t have to worry about his sisters causing problems. For the moment anyways. His face contorted in his confusion while he tried to figure out what that one thought had been. It was just there, right out or reach… Then Alarion asked if he was okay and it fluttered away. Damn.
Reaper glanced down at her, offering a toothy grin. “Thought disappeared. I get it later.” He nodded. It would eventually come back to him. “You? Do thoughts run from you too?”

Now she did have to laugh. “Yes. My thoughts run from me too. More often then I’d like lately. Don’t worry, though. I bet you’ll get it back soon.” She offered a brushing of her shoulder against his in encouragement. “Maybe I can help? What was it about?”
She could feel eyes watching them and it made her cringe down a little. Why did they have to keep staring at her?! Some of them so pitifully. Others like she was useless. Some even regarded her like she was prey, ripe for the picking. Those were the ones she avoided the most. Without being able to fly, she wouldn’t be able to escape if they attacked. And that was not uncommon around here. Even Reaper, the gentle giant, got in fights. Everyone was always so on edge here. And those that weren’t, tried to make themselves as invisible as possible. Like herself.

Something seemed to bother her. He didn’t know why this fact caught his attention, but it did. And the shoulder bump made his skin ripple. She was so close…! He could almost hear her heart beating. Just the thought of it had his teeth grinding and a wistful looking filling his eyes. Until someone gave the mare a curious look. Reaper suddenly stood taller, letting his size be seen. The other caught his gaze and immediately cowered. No. Alarion was not for the taking. She had already been claimed. She was his. Once he had accomplished what was expected of him, then he could have her heart.
“Something I like. I dunno what it was.” He replied after a minute to her inquiries. “Maybe something do with you.” A hint of teasing escaped as he nuzzled the mare. An action that he didn’t have to fake. He did enjoy affection. And this mare didn’t bite him when he tried to get a few cuddles or nuzzles out of her. Unlike Conq and Des…
“You me like.” He said suddenly, as if a light bulb had turned on. Yes! That was what he needed to tell her. She needed to know he pretend liked her. Otherwise she wouldn’t like him too. “You like I?”

That was certainly NOT something she had been expecting to hear. Al stumbled and made quite the embarrassing spectacle as she kept from falling, wings trying to flare out to help her keep balance. This caused a flood of pain and had a soft whimper escape her lips.
“S-Sorry. How clumsy of me.” She ducked her head so that he wouldn’t see the pain in her eyes as she folded her wings back against her.
“You… like me?” Al asked with a stupid ray of hope filling her. He liked her?! Even in the worst place possible, was there a chance she could find something special? “I… I do like you too.” She whispered bashfully, tilting her head enough to look up at him. “I really do like you.” Yes he was weird. And yes, he was slow. But he had been the only one so far to be kind to her. To take the time to get to know her and go on walks like this.
Al didn’t even know how to feel. That ray of hope was growing and now that she knew Reaper liked her. For the first time since coming here with Lux and suffering the accident that crippled her wings, she thought there might be a chance. That her purpose for finally coming here to help Lux was suddenly laid out at her hooves.

The first true smile he’d ever shown the mare spread across his face. His eyes brightened and there was a sense of victory that filled him. Yes! Yes yes yes. He had done it! He had gotten this pitiful creature to like him! And that was the important step, right? She just had to like him and then he could get minions from her. He was so excited and happy that he was one step closer to being able to have her heart that he embraced the mare, curling his head and neck along hers.
“Very excited!” He said gleefully, feeling the small body of the mare respond to his cuddling. “Destiny.” He chuckled out. It was her destiny. She would be his special gift to his sister. Once he had those minions she wanted. But now he had to just keep mama from getting them first.
“We have walks like this more, yes?” Reaper asked curiously, pulling back to look down at the pale crippled mare. “Spend more time?” Her nodded was all he needed. Yes. His mission was underway and going so smoothly he still couldn’t believe it. He had to tell Conq soon! She’d be so proud of him, right?! Oh he hoped so! But for now, he had to walk with Alarion. So she continued to like him.
