Veluri knew that he shouldn't wander off alone, but he was just so. bored. that he couldn't stand it. It actually felt like an ache inside his head when he thought about just sitting about at home, doing nothing. His sisters were of no use, they were doing their own thing and he wasn't invited because he was a boy. Snorting, he leaped over a tree that had fallen down and continued on his way, making as much noise as a foal should when wandering around woods he had never been in.
He could always see these dark trees from the very edge of his parents' land. But they never ventured this way, and Vel was hesitant to ask why because that would give away his interest and then they would forbid him to go. Smirking, feeling like he got around that by just not saying anything, Vel knew he would still get in trouble for wanderng off, but at least this was he wasn't expressly forbidden from being at this very spot.
And why would he be? It wasn't like the canopy was so thick that it blocked out most light, leaving the ground below in a perpetual state of twilight, with deep shadows that anything could hide in at the bases of the trees. It wasn't as if this forest was so old, and the trees so high, that below them there was very little in the way of underbrush because there was no sun for them to grow in, depriving him of pretty much any hiding place that he could think of in the cool expanse under the trees. And it wasn't like there weren't other animal sounds to make him feel safe, birds and squirrels in the trees and rabbits on the ground.
Oh, wait, it was exactly like that. Velrui shivered from nose to tail, looking all around him with wide eyes. He wouldn't say that he spooked easily. His sisters would. In less time than it took a hummingbird to beat it's wings once. But he never said it, and wouldn't say it. Vel only got spooked for good reason.
Like being in a silent, dark forest where there could be any number of things lurking, ready to pounce and devour him.
Veluri shivered again, but kept walking. If the canopy was a little thinner, let in a little bit more light, than this might be a nice place to visit, but it was too dark, to cool for comfort, and it made him with his bright hide stand out like a firefly at night.
He found himself wandering in a large, open clearing, surrounded by dark trees and silence. The only thing in the clearing was a few rays of sunshine that penetraed the leaves above, and in the light the things florished. Some sort of ivy with tube like red and orange flowers here, a cluster of the prettiest green and blue flowers he had ever seen. He thought that he should pick some (The green ones for Zareem and some of both for Eteri, it would match their eyes quite well), but he skirted around them, trying to see into. some of the dark places, just to make sure it was safe.
Yeah, that was totally it. He was being cautious, just cautious.
The wasn't really anything living in the rest of the clearing aside from where the light shone in, but it wasn't a smooth dirt floor either. Roots from the great trees around them broke the surface of the ground like fish on a river. Vel had to be really careful as he moved over one bigger than his foreleg. He knew if he didn't pay attention to where his hooves were going, he would end up tumbling. And, knowing his luck, he'd end up tandled in the ivy or whatever it was. And it would be itchy, too, he could just tell.
Laughing a little nerviously at his dire predictions, Vel moved back toward the sunlight, grateful for it's warmth as he pondered which of the flowers he should pick. Maybe if he brought home enough of the right ones, it would keep him out of trouble.

Vanya was alone. This was unusual for him. Normally he had his sister about and one of his moms- usually Elaenyra. Proserpina sometimes didn't come by much, but he'd never known anything different so didn't know if it was unusual. He was alone today because of the time, midday. Elaenyra always fell asleep during the daytime. She sometimes wouldn't even wake up if you bit her, which Vanya had attempted in a few of his more cranky moments. Vanya liked sleeping through the day too, but sometimes he was restless. Sometimes he wandered about when it was still light, even though the brightness hurt his many red glowing eyes. At least the forest helped. The forest was so dense that he could walk around in it without pain, even in the brightest of afternoons. He still instinctively kept to the shadows, though. He knew he was out of place while the sun still shone. He wandered without any goal other than curing boredom and soon found himself at the edge of a meadow. This is where he stopped, paws still in the dirt. All of the eyes that covered him squinted against the brightness. He couldn't pass here. He began to skirt around the clearing, and that's when he noticed it: He wasn't alone. There was another foal out there, just as bereft of adult companionship as he was. Vanya paused, watching. He'd seen so few soquili that weren't part of his family.

Veluri was very careful when he picked the flowers, making sure not to leave many indentations in the stems, or pick ones that had any sort of flaw in on the petals themsevles. He was oddly focused on his task until he had two small piles of flowers, one blue and one a mix of blue and green. Yes, that should keep him from getting into too much trouble, bringing home such a thoughtful and pretty gift for his sisters. Or so he hoped.
Carefully, he gathered all the flowers together and picked them up in his mouth. It felt a little weird, trying to keep them all from falling while trying to keep from damaging them. Maybe it was something he should practice for, you know, the pretty mares he planned to meet. They all liked flowers, right? And therefore would like to recieve them from someone. It would make them happy and, with the exception of his sisters, he liked making others happy.
So, flowers held carefully, Vel turned to head back the way he came, glad he had a good sense of direction, and stopped. In the clearing, in the sunlight, he had forgotten how dark the forest was. Dancing on his hooves a little, he peered into the darkness in the direction he thought he had to go. Suddenly, while he was standing so comfortably in the bright light, it seemed like a bad idea to go back into the dark.
It wasn't that he was afraid. Okay, scratch that, he wasn't about to start lying to himself. He was afraid, of the dark and all the things in it. Vel always felt like he was suntouched, what with the color of his pelt. Meant to do all the things under the sun. Literally under the sun. Now he was seriously doubting his decision to venture into the forest, trouble-saving flowers or no.
Taking a deep, soothing breath, he started forward slowly, eyes fixed on the path in front of him. Vel jumped a little at every sound, and that was before was even under the canopy proper. A little annoyed at himself, he kept going forward, replacing warm sun with cool darkness.
It wasn't like he could wait there for someone to find him. He supposed that his mother or father would find him eventually, but probably not until after dark, or later even. No. It was best for him to just face his irrational fear of this forest and get home.
If he did it at a faster walk than normal, well, no one had to know.
It wasn't until he was shrouded completely in the seeming unnatural darkness of the place that he notice... something. Someone? All he could see was the shine of many red... eyes? Were those eyes? Or just... something else.
His heart raced, his own blue eyes fixed on those red ones as he stopped completely, flowers falling forgotten from his mouth.
"Hello?"
