The freshling had been in his room since his classes for the day were over. He could safely say he wasn't like most freshlings his age - he preferred studying alone, away from the distractions of others. Nightmares, daydreams... They were just holding him back from his goals and dreams. Sitting at his desk, his pink eyes scanned the textbook set out in front of himself, fascinated with the information he was reading. It was associated with illness diagnoses and different types of medicines, a fascination he had picked up on. If he could study and absorb all this information, then perhaps he could find a cure for his mother, the only one he felt like truly cared for him. Feeling his flitterat shuffle a little, obviously awakening from his nap, he corrected himself - his mother was the only nightmare that cared for him; in the time they’ve spent together, young Poe had gained a fondness for Eli that potentially rivaled his mother’s.

And of course, Poe had wakened from his nap, so it meant it was food time; he felt the flitterat n** at his neck gently, eager for attention and treats.

"Hey, you know better than that," he chastised it before affectionately plucking the white-and-blue creature off his shoulder and petting it softly. Eli pulled out a carton of treats from one of the desk drawers, feeding the critter. Distracted with the food, Poe happily nibbled away and made no fuss when Eli placed it on his desk instead.

Which left the demon back to his thinking. Ever since arriving at the academy, Eli had been diligent with his studies. He told his mother he'd make her proud and it was a promise he intended to keep. Now, staring at the textbook, and gazing at his shelf, which was stocked with different topics that related to medicine, alchemy, different healing magics, illnesses, diseases... The freshling was fairly sure what he knew what he wanted to major in, when the day came. His mother was the most important thing to him in the world, and he intended to help her.

...Which reminded him! He had yet to write to her for this week. Pulling out some stationary she had sent him in their last correspondence, he slowly wrote the date on the page followed by a "Hey Mom:". His handwriting was far from neat; like most freshlings, he lacked the neatness that came from repetitive writing and so learned to write slow so his words were eligible. He wrote the letter:

      Hey Mom:

School has been good. I think I'm almost a junior. Isn't it crazy how time flies? It still feels like yesterday, when I was leaving. I miss you. And I hope you and dad are doing well...

Did I tell you? I think I know what I want to major in. Medicine! Could you imagine having a doctor in the family? Maybe dad wouldn't have to work so hard then. Not much has happened this week, so I’m sorry for not writing so much. I did get a new wisp. I’m going to have to buy more magic crystals for them soon… I learned I can’t put that off or else I’ll get really tired. Also I have been studying and reading a lot the past few days because I have a big test coming up. I want to see if I can make a perfect on it. Tell Dad I said hello, and that I got his previous letter and will be sending him something soon.

      With all the love,
      Eli.

Done with the letter, he sealed it carefully and addressed it accordingly. Glancing at the time, he realized he would have to drop it off tomorrow. Deciding it was time to take a break from his studying, he leaning back in his chair, he rubbed his eyes a little and let out a soft sigh of relief. The past few days for him had been a bit life changing. Eli had definitely given the subject of majors and where he wanted to head in life the past few days a lot of thought… And now he was confident in his decision. It seemed like the only reasonable decision.
