Gretchen really didn't know a whole lot about the Life lead. She'd asked around, been given a few conflicting opinions on what to expect, but the one thing that seemed to have been universal was that the good doctor appreciated manners. She could certainly manage that. Her momma and daddy had raised her right. So instead of simply walking into the lead's office, the young lady paused in the hall outside the door, knocking briskly on the frame to announce herself. "Good afternoon, Sir. Would you happen 'ta have a moment for a quick word?"

Without looking up from his notes the doctor waved toward the empty chairs across from him, "Of course, my dear."

The girl smiled, dipping her head in a nod that the good doctor likely wouldn't catch, but she did walk in an take a seat, as directed. Dark eyes skimming the desk, Gretchen folded her hands between her knees, lips pursing momentarily as she tried to figure out exactly how to bring up what it was she wanted to talk to him about. "Thank you, sir, for taking the time to talk to me."

Glancing up at her with a smile, the doctor replied, "Oh, not at all. As a leader I feel it's important to always put my best foot forward."

"Oh!" Gretchen chuckled, smile growing into a full grin as she moved to sit on the edge of her chair. "Very clever, sir." A little relieved, and more than a little delighted with the witty response. Well, assuming it was due to her leg, that he'd seen her around or seen her file, and hadn't just gotten ironically lucky with his metaphors.

The doctor tapped his pen on the desk once, then twice, and set it aside.

The smile wilted just a touch as the pen tapped. "Right." He was a busy man. "Well, it's about of an odd question. Request, really." She still wasn't exactly sure how best to ask. "The thing is, sir. The prosthetic I came here with, it's takin' a real beating, what with my shield not extending down to protect it, and I was wonderin'--Hopin' really--that perhaps there was a material on the island a fair bit stronger?"

"We have materials that have been enhanced via runes to be stronger, more durable, and even shielded," the doctor informed her with a smile. "And I'm sure there's quite a number of techs that would be happy to have a willing subject to continue experimentation concerning long-term interactions with a living body."

The Death trainee sat up a little straighter, the wilted smile coming back in full. That all sounded incredibly helpful. A leg that she didn't have to worry about? That her shield could protect? Yes please! Her only concern, and she didn't think it was an unfounded one, came with the mention of experimentation. "Is...is it safe, sir?" There were some risks she was willing to take, they came with the job description. She'd just rather not lose anymore of the leg. "I mean, relatively."

"Oh no not at all," the doctor answered reassuringly. "The issue they're trying resolve is how unsafe it is."

"O-oh.." Well that was pretty disappointing. Gretchen sank back in her chair, lower lip drawing in for an anxious n****e as her attention slipped from the Life lead and down to her lap. "Is there maybe someone around that could help in making just a normal replacement? I'm pretty sure I can't just go back to my old doctor." She really wasn't sure what to do.

"Of course, my dear. We have a supply room dedicated to spare limbs for our amputee crowd, the infirmary staff will make sure of the fit." Picking up the pen again, the doctor went on, "But if you decide to try the runic versions, do take care not to wear them overlong. Particularly as a trainee."

"So I could get a new normal leg, n' also dip my toes in the runic pond, just to see how it goes?" She could look into, at least. See what they'd need from her, what sort of risks she'd be facing. "Obligation free."

"Okay." So she could volunteer, give it a shot, and if it got to be too much, she could walk away. That wouldn't be too bad, probably. She'd have some manner of control over what was going on. "Okay, so. If I wanted to go the other route, who should I aim to talk to?"
