Even if his attempt at making his own vest had failed, Vodyanoi had gotten a bit of an appetite for crafting. He’d always loved picking up trinkets and accessories to make himself look bright and colorful, but this seemed to be like an even better way of getting the effects he wanted. Why, with enough practice he’d be able to make whatever it was he wanted! All one had to do was go to the market for some supplies, and those were much cheaper to come by than the finished products themselves.
It was while wandering the markets in a big Oban town that he landed upon the idea of making a necklace. A quiet woman from Zena was selling many polished stone beads. They weren’t dirt-cheap, but by making some strategic selections, he was able to pick out a good set within his own budget. He bought a piece of leather cord from another merchant, and headed back to the caravan to put it all together.
He used the old skin of a drum as his work-area, spreading it out on the dirt and settling in an out-of-the-way spot to work. First, he set the beads out in the arrangement he wanted -- alternating cool silver-gray ones with some pretty blue ones and the few precious white ones he had picked up at a premium. There was also one big one, a honey-red marbled teardrop that would go in the middle. Once he wa satisfied, he thread the cord through each one in turn. That took some getting used to, for it was detailed work -- but his hands were used to nimble drumming, and soon enough he was able to hold up a rather lovely piece of work. He knotted the loose ends of the cord together and hung the necklace around his neck, then stood up to find someone he could show off to.
