Triumphalis was on his way home. Since the untimely demise of his car (and he was prepared to admit it was a shitty car), he'd been reduced to a combination of walking and public transportation - and it was too late at night for the latter. Now that he knew exactly how dangerous Destiny City could be, he wasn't going to risk walking home all by his civilian self. He had mouths to feed. Well not literally, no one was going to starve if Carson didn't make it home, but - people would be sad. Triumphalis picked his way across the rooftop, skirting patches of ice. The sooner winter ended, the better. But for now, he'd make do and try not to slip and break his neck. It was still safer than walking the surface streets.

Aluminite was out because he was trying to be the good little soldier boy who went out and patrolled and filled his quotas. He was also out because he had an important paper due in two days but was too much of a bundle of nerves and stress to deal with it. Not with the presence of General Labyrinthite always in the back of his mind.
He, however, was not doing what he was supposed to be doing and instead had found himself a nice rooftop ledge to sit on as he looked down at the expanse of the city. It was eerily calming, despite the brisk and bitter cold that settled against his skin, seeping past the layers his uniform provided him.
Of course, an advancing aura had him climbing to his feet, anxiety swirling in his belly as he backed away from the ledge and turned towards what he thought was the approaching aura. Could they feel him? Were they aware he was there?
Were they approaching him on purpose?
His face seemed to pale as a shiver ran down his spine and he wrapped arms around himself and waited.Silverah I didn't realize I hadn't tagged this until I was combing through stuff. Sorry about the wait!

Triumphalis felt the lieutenant before he actually saw him, but then, that was how these things usually went. He wasn't really in the mood for a fight - the way the lieutenant was hugging himself suggested he wasn't in much of one, either. Triumphalis nodded to him politely as he passed. "Evening," he said. Just keep swimming.

His face paled even further, if that was at all possible, when he took in the uniform the approaching knight wore. Chronos. Oh, if that didn't make his stomach flip in the worst way well - the panic rising in him certainly did.
"H-hello," he stammered, clutching himself tighter.
It looked like the other man was just going to continue on his way, that was great! Except - for some reason Aluminite was reaching for the other man his mouth opening but no words came out.
He hesitated, looked incredibly conflicted before he forced some words out. "You're one of Chronos's?"

Triumphalis froze as the lieutenant reached for him, trying to get a read on the other man's intentions. He didn't seem violent. Which wasn't to say he wasn't. "Yeah," said Triumphalis. "What gave it away?" This guy seemed... weird. Could be that he was afraid of Triumphalis. Could be that he had a guilty conscience. (Could be, whispered the part of his brain that was still a soldier, a suicide bomber.) Triumphalis looked down at the lieutenant's outstretched hand. "You mind easing up there, buddy?"

"I just - " he stopped shook his head and swallowed hard. His jaw worked like he was trying to figure out how to form the words for what he wanted to say.
He had begged Babylon not to say anything to anyone about what he might be but here, with this other knight one who belonged to the princess he supposedly did to -
That was different. Right?
"I recognize the symbol," he said said thinking of the girl he'd run into years ago. It was scattered across his memories, flashes of towers and pillars and things he didn't get a chance to explore.
You mind easing up there, buddy?
Immediately both hands went into a surrender gesture and he stepped back. "Sorry I didn't - " Aluminte didn't even know what he'd been about to do or why he was reaching for him.
"What's she like?" The question slipped from his mouth and his eyes widened in surprise. "Uh, the princess I mean."

Triumphalis watched the lieutenant warily, still trying to get a fix on what this guy's deal was. As he stepped back, the tension went out of the page's shoulders as well. His fingers went slightly slack around his tipstaff. "I wouldn't know," he said with a shrug. "I've never met her." Nuxaz Sorry for the short tag - didn't seem like a whole lot needed to be said right here!

I wouldn't know. I've never met her.
Those words were incredibly disappointing and the lieutenant felt himself deflate, emotionally and physically. "Oh." Had it been foolish of him to assume that her knights knew her?
Perhaps.
Still, how disappointing, he thought.
'But - the surrounding. You've been there?" He wondered if it was still as decrepit as he remembered. Though he hadn't seen too much of it, not really.

Triumphalis shook his head. "No, I haven't found the time," he confessed. He'd been avoiding it, really, not sure which option was worse - that he was Virgo's ancient handmaiden, or that said handmaiden would be waiting for him, unrequited crush on his girlfriend and all. "What business do you have with the Surrounding, lieutenant?" he asked, far more curious than accusatory. "Or the princess?"

"Oh."
Aluminite looked as disappointed as he felt, a mixture of emotions twisting inside of him uncomfortably. He didn't feel as though he had the right to be disappointed and yet he was. It'd been foolish of him to assume that just because someone wore the colors of Chronos, was one of her knights, that they would've gone to her kingdom.
Was the surrounding her kingdom?
He didn't know but he liked to picture it as such.
What business do you have -
He swallowed hard, forced himself to lock gazes with Triumphalis. "No true business but...curiosity I suppose?" A weak answer but the lieutenant didn't know what else to say. "I think I was there once, a long time ago. I wondered if it still looked the same or if it looked better." He couldn't help but hope it looked better. "I don't - I don't have business with the princess."
Weak answers, weak resolve. Aluminite was weak.

Triumphalis nodded, and then after a moment he shrugged. "Sorry," he said. "I wouldn't know anything about that." He knew there'd been a battle on the Surrounding a few years ago - it was part of the shared mythology of seemingly every Chronos knight save himself. Triumphalis, it seemed, had arrived fifteen minutes late to the interstellar war, without even Starbucks to apologize for his lateness. "It was... you were the for the battle, yeah?" he asked. "When the other Chronos knights awoke. I... I was still in the Army then. Missed that completely. Heard plenty of stories, though." He smiled, tight-lipped, resigned. "You've seen one war, you've seen 'em all."

He nodded at first, trying to keep the disappointment from blossoming across his chest and showing in the way he held himself. Aluminite knew he'd been foolish to think that the other man would have answers for him. Childish hope was all it was in the end.
"No, no. I shouldn't have - assuming is always a terrible idea," he replied weakly, offering a weaker smile in turn.
"I wasn't. Not really." He hadn't done any fighting, not really. He'd died and been this spirit who did nothing useful before there was an all consuming light and -
He'd been back at the bookstore, looking at textbooks.
"Guess you never really get out, even when you try."

"Not as far as I can tell," agreed Triumphalis. He had... a lot of thoughts on the subject, none of which seemed appropriate to bring up with the lieutenant across from him. There was no such thing, as far as Triumphalis could tell, as a purely objective war. Everyone thought they were the good guys. Everyone thought the other side was the bad guys. Even this war, which looked so black and white, was purely subjective. "I'm good at fighting," he shrugged. "Doesn't mean I've got to like it." He held a friendly hand out towards the lieutenant. "Name's Triumphalis, by the way."

It seemed like a rational thought, as far as Aluminite was concerned. He knew, if he ever wanted to leave the negaverse that well, he'd never really get out. Inactive wasn't something they accepted, not really. He had to assume that he was in for life no matter what he might want.
It'd been a long road to accepting that and yet, here he was accepting it.
"I know how to fight, but it's not by choice." He cracked a meager grin thinking about all the grueling training sessions his general had subject him, and others, to relentlessly.
"I'm - " he looked at the extended hand uncertainly before eventually shaking it. "Aluminite."

Triumphalis nodded, his handshake appropriately firm for someone of his stature. "Aluminite," he repeated. "Man, do you find your names in a mineral atlas or what?" He admittedly was not hugely schooled in the Negaverse's inner workings, just that they collected energy and were kind of major jerks. Aluminite broke the mold, however - starting with his decision not to fight Triumphalis. "I don't think fighting is ever anyone's choice," he said. "You fight when you don't have any other options. Fight, or let the opposition chip pieces of you away. Eventually you can't take it anymore and you fight." Let it be noted for the record that he had the eyes of someone who'd seen some s**t. Nuxaz Sorry, having some computer trouble. QQ
