The whole mingling mixer had gone well enough, even if he hadn’t been able to get anywhere near the punch without getting a few funny looks. It wasn’t really what he was here for anyway. The main attraction was going to be his date and he had that red envelope open almost as soon as he had it in his hands. Fingers sliding it open, pulling out the card instead and… laughed. Well, he had no issue with romancing an older lady if she liked a good night out. Jayce found himself in the ‘Art Through Music’ exhibit staring at a group of paintings which had apparently been inspired by Beatles songs. He couldn’t really see the connection. The Yellow Submarine one had zero yellow and zero submarines. Just a whole lot of green and purple. With one hand in his ripped black jeans and the other angling his nearly finished drink into his mouth, Jayce probably didn’t look like a winning dating prospect. He had at least added a dash of colour with a red scarf. Yes, it did have skulls on it, but it was kind of cute. Kolina let (potential) date-aster begin!

Gwen had never done anything like a mixer before. In fact, she'd done everything possible to avoid such things since she was, quite possibly, one of the most awkward people when it came to flirting. In fact, her flirting game was nearly non-existent. Still, she had moved to DC in an attempt to make some changes in her life and prove to herself that she could survive on her own. Of course, when she signed up for this mixer she hadn't thought she'd be paired with a 19 year old. Instantly she was much calmer about the whole evening as she had absolute no interest in doing anything but befriending someone who was 6 years her junior. Gwen was just much more interested in guys who were her age or older. Still, she did wonder what the people hosting the mixer were thinking. None-the-less, with her red hair down, dressed in a red sweater dress, tights, thigh high heeled black boots, and a gray fashion scarf, Gwen manuvered her way through the crowd of people. Note in hand, she glanced down at it to confirm where she was suppose to meet up with Jayce. Of course, when she received the note with the white-out line, she had to hold it to the light to attempt to read it. Only a few words could be discerned but Gwen got the distinct impression that this boy was a bit of a troublemaker. Oh to be 19 again and want to drink and party all of the time. Stepping into the 'Art Through Music' exhibit it didn't take Gwen long to find Jayce as he stood there contemplating Beatles song inspired art. She walked up to him and smiled. "Anything catch your attention? I am Gweneth by the way, but feel free to call me Gwen." She held a hand out to him.

When his date arrived, Jayce turned to meet her with his widest grin. “Not in the slightest,” he answered. “Jayce. Pleasure.” He gave her hand a strong shake and looked her up and down. Definitely a looker. He’d always had a thing for redheads. Six years wasn’t exactly cougar territory but most girls seemed to have this thing about age, regardless of how well they got along. So while it would probably be good for him to straight out admit that he wasn’t looking for anything more than a good time tonight, he doubted she was sizing up as a long term potential partner either. Regardless, he was going to make their ‘date’ as fun as possible. “Okay, first things first,” his tone dropped lower, mock serious, “what’s your deal with chinese food?”

Gwen blinked for a second before chuckling. "Right to the point, eh?" With a smile she shrugged. "It just doesn't agree with me. Too greasy and salty." She paused a moment before crossing her arms. "Now, mushrooms on the other hand are delicious and so good for you. I can't imagine how anyone wouldn't like them." She had to admit that Jayce certainly had looks on his side. He'd certainly be breaking hearts on the dating scene, she had no doubt. Still, he had that baby face that was off putting for her, personally. Ah well, a night of enjoying company and making friends was well in order. It just meant she didn't need to try and flirt with anyone, which probably would have ended in disaster. "So, what constitutes a boring person for you?" She leaned against the banister that worked as a barrier to keep people away from the art work. She pushed some stray hair back out of her face.

"Woah, you are eating the wrong kind of chinese food." He put his hands up, as if to stop her from speaking any further blasphemy. "You can’t go to some shitty food court or some Noodle Wok and expect anything that isn’t coated in grease and msg. Nah, you have to go down those alleys in Chinatown. You need to get the fresh stuff. They do this fish steamed with soy sauce and ginger and it’s the best thing you’ll ever eat." Just thinking about it made his mouth water. "Mushrooms, however, are a complete deal breaker. Conversation over. I’d like to say it was nice to meet you but..." Jayce might have just walked away for comedic effect but he didn’t want to ruin the night that quickly. He grinned, copying her posture against the banister. "Someone who isn’t willing to try new things or talk and get animated and be excited about stuff. I don’t care what you’re into but I want to know about it and want you to tell me everything. Boring people don’t share things and that annoys me."

"I may have to give it a try then, one day, when I am feeling adventerous and am willing to possibly deal with the repercussions." She laughed and shrugged. "I unfortunately have a bad taste in my mouth for it now and I fear any sort of chinese food." She raised a brow at the mushroom comment. "That's perfectly fine. Id on't know if I could associate myself with someone who could possibly hate mushrooms." Gwen said flippantly with a hand gesture. Unlike Jayce she went to the point of turning and looking as if she was about to walk away but glanced over her shoulder and laughed. "Seems we will have to agree to disagree on our taste of food." She settled back against the rail again. "Hmmm...I could see how that would categorize someone as boring. Some people are wont to get stuck in their ways though but that doesn't mean they can't be interesting. You just need to push the right buttons." She glanced at Jayce again as if assessing him. "So, tell me, how did a 19 year old feel the need to join a mixer? I have to say I'd be surprised if you didn't have a girl or two interested in you. Unless you came here more with the intent to gain more friends?" Tilting her head to the side, Gwen was genuinely curious. After all, she had joined because she was so new to the city, but if this was back in New York she wouldn't have bothered with such a thing as a mixer. Ruriska Sorry this took so long. Work and the Meta have just been dominating my life this week.

"It’s like saying you hate all Japanese food. There’s a big difference between a bowl of ramen, sushi and tonkatsu, right? Chinese food has just as much variety. It’s not just lemon chicken and black bean beef." He pointed out, not letting the point die because he was making himself hungry and was hoping he could convince her to leave here and go out for Chinese later. His eyebrows shot up as she put on a show of turning around. He didn’t make any move to stop her, just waited until she looked back and laughed. His lips quirked up in an amusement. It was a nice little display. A good bit of flirting. "True enough. I don’t want to have to work so hard that I have to find the right buttons. I like my buttons clearly labelled and in red." Jayce laughed and have a nonchalant shrug. "Why not? Sure, I have a girl or two. I’m not here because I have trouble finding someone to shag. I came because it looked fun and new. Saw the notice in the paper and took the plunge. It’s a good way to talk to people you wouldn’t normally mix with. Like hot, older red-heads who hate Chinese food." Kolina No worries! I'm in the same boat! <3

Gwen shook her head and laughed lightly. "Alright, alright. I get it! There's a lot of different types of chinese food. Maybe I'll try it again one day and make sure I am at a good restaurant." Jayce's enthusiasm and passion over the food was adorable. If anything she'd give it a try because of how adamant he was about the fact that she needed to try it again. She'd certainly remember him now though every time she passed a chinese joint. "With smooth talk like that I am not at all surprised you have a girl or two." She laughed, but enjoyed the compliment none-the-less. It wasn't often she got them, and when she did she tended to shy away. Jayce though, being so much younger than her, was less a threat and more like a younger brother in a sense to her. "I've never attempted a mixer before, myself. I have to admit, I didn't really know what to expect from it." She shrugged slightly. "It's been interesting so far and I think it's more useful for finding possible friends than actual dates. But, who knows, maybe someone here is finding the love of their life." "Anyway, Would you like to continue browsing the gallery or do something else?"

"Expect the unexpected, isn’t that what they say?" Jayce laughed. "I think it’s good for a bit of fun, that’s all. But I do hope someone out there is finding the love of their life. Makes for a good story. They can tell their three adorable children the story of how mummy and daddy met each other at the museum mixer." It was too easy and he could not resist stepping right into the opening she’d given him. His eyebrows shot up and he let his best grin slide across his face, lips quirking up with a quick flash of teeth. "Well, that I was quick. I passed some sort of cleaning supply cupboard in the next hall. It won’t be comfy but it’ll do." He let the words hang there, almost laughing and then waved a hand dismissively. "Come on. Let’s walk around, I’ll dis the exhibits and artwork for a bit, we’ll eventually get bored and go get something to eat and if there just happens to be a pretty decent Chinese place around the corner, you’ll let me buy you dinner and not complain when I eat chicken feet in front of you. Sounds good?"

"I...walked right into that." She laughed as Jayce mentioned the supply cupboard. "You're right, it would be terribly uncomfortable. I think I'll pass." Really, this boy certainly knew his way around women. It was certainly an interesting night to say the least and she felt calm around Jayce. Enough so to tease anyway. "Now, that second idea sounds like a sound plan. Some entertainment while we browse around would be lovely. As for the Chinese..." She paused and sighed. "I think I can deal with that, but I may have to draw the line at chicken feet. I...why would you want to eat that?" And she wasn't teasing about that. Why the hell would anyone want to eat chicken feet? There couldn't possibly be anything good about it. They were nothing but skin and bones. "Let's make it a quick browse though. I think my stomach may start revolting if I don't eat soon." She smiled. Ruriska Maybe start closing this up?

"Shame, maybe next time then," Jayce replied with a deliberately dramatic sigh and a hand over his heart. At least she’d bought into dinner and he flashed her a delighted grin. "If I can’t win you over on a supply cupboard romp, then I’ll be doing my best with Chinese." He moved closer, holding out an elbow out for her to take, one eyebrow arching, curious to see if she would. "Chicken feet, my dear, are magical. The crunch mixed with a gelatinous ooze, the sauce that is both salty and sweet, amazing. Even the health properties are endless. Improves blood circulation, glowing skin and knowing the Chinese, probably some sort of male fertility enhancement. I mean, I know I’m always on the top of my game and maybe I have all those chicken feet to thank." Jayce grinned. He was glad he’d come here tonight, a new friend was always good deal and he liked Gweneth. She clearly had a good sense of humour and an open mind.

Jayce's offered elbow didn't go unnoticed by Gwen. As odd as it was though, it was a bit of a step too far for her. At least right now. She may have been comfortable enough with the young man to joke around since he reminded her very much of her brother, she wasn't completely disillusioned that she barely knew the kid. So, instead of taking his offered arm she flashed him a grin and began to slowly walk away to begin leading them through the rest of the exhibit. Jayce's descirption of chicken feet as they walked cause an involuntarily shudder to run down the woman's spine. "I think I'll pass on the chicken feet. They do not sound at all appealing despite whatever health benefits they may have. Considering that people swear that bugs are super healthy you definitely won't see me chowing down crickets either." She laughed despite the second shudder that went through her body at the thought of eating bugs or chicken feet. Why did I bring up bugs? I creeped myself out.Still, despite the topic at hand, Gwen really was enjoying herself. Jayce was a good kid and was quite open and outgoing which worked well for her usual introverted tendencies. It also made perusing the art that more enjoyable as comments and critiques were made on random pieces. After perusing the exhibit though Gwen was quite hungry and somewhat looking forward to trying out the chinese that Jayce swore was much better than the norm.

The rejection was a slight disappointment but he rode it easily, with a grin and a shrug. It probably had been a bit of a strength, even if she had responded well enough to his playful flirting. Not everyone was inclined to get touchy-feeling with near-strangers at the first offering. So instead he followed after her, hands in his pockets and a smile ever present. “I’d give it a shot,” Jayce decided out loud, after he had stopped laughing over her second, dramatic shudder over the idea of eating bugs. “They deep fry them anyway and everything tastes good deep fried. It’s just be like a crunchy cricket chip.” They continued around the exhibits and Jayce spent a good deal of it merrily deriding nearly every piece of art they came across (“A five year old could paint better.” “I’m pretty sure I vomited up something just like this last Friday night.” “Do you think some guy just forgot his shoe and someone was just too dumb to realize it wasn’t art?”). He was still chatting, about nonsense things, nothing hard hitting or personal, as he led her to the Chinese restaurant and secured them two seats. It was a small place with a fish tank full of crabs and rows of roast duck in the window. Their cups were instantly full of steaming tea thanks to a smiling waitress. “I’m going to order,” he told her in warning, “and you’re going to like it. All you need to do is tell me what sort of protein you prefer and I’ll do the rest.”

Exploring the museum with Jayce had been interesting. If anything he was amusing with his commentary and Gwen genuinely enjoyed herself. Bouncing from the mixer was not all that big of a deal to her at that point and she was quite happy to get food. Thankfully, the place Jayce had suggested was close and it didn't take them long to be seated. Gwen made a face when Jayce said he was going to order. She'd be lying if she said that she wasn't nervous about what he had in mind. She pondered her options of protein, wondering what might be the safest to say before narrowing her eyes slightly. "I prefer chicken, but not...feet..." She said and raised a brow. If Jayce had any want in her actually giving this whole Chinese food a try he'd have to present her with something that was to her palate and chicken feet, or anything that wasn't necessarily common to eat, was not going to be in his best interest. Especially considering she had, quite clearly, expressed how much she was not at all interested in chewing on bony, meatless feet. Blech. "It's taking a lot to let me trust you to order. Though I did eye a mexican place on the way here so if all else fails." She shrugged. "I can make a stop on my way home." She offered him a smile to prove she wasn't going to be terribly harsh, but he was taking her out of her comfort zone here, so she hoped he respected that.

“Don’t look so nervous,” he teased. “I want you to like Chinese food. I’m not going to have you eat steamed chicken feet wrapped in tripe or something.” He was intent on pleasing her. It wouldn’t do to have her be disgusted and forced to eat Mexican later. Jayce was on a mission and he hated to fail. The waitress came over and just to be an a*****e, he lifted his menu up and instead of reading out the names, pointed at the various items with a smug ‘this one’ and ‘this one too’ and ‘oh yes that one as well please!’. The menus were taken away as quick as they arrived and tea was soon placed on the table, which Jayce poured. Jayce made idle talk as they waited, chopsticks already in hand and clacking together whenever he had an important point to make. Then the food arrived. “This one,” Jayce explained once everything was set out before them, “is a hotpot of chicken and black fungus, that’s a mushroom, don’t freak out about the name. Also see, how much I care? I hate mushrooms and yet I have ordered you such a delightful meal.” He grinned. “Over here is the char kway teow. It’s a noodle stir fry with prawns and meat and veg.” ‘ He tapped the last bowl with his chopsticks. “This one is my favourite. It’s Mapo Tofu. It’s basically a spicy tofu dish.” Two bowls of rice on the side completed the meal and Jayce sat back expectantly. “Go on, trust me.” Kolina I think if she reacts to the food! I could probably finish it after that?
