"You, sir. Are an idiot."
The admonishment was stern, if sounding a little rusty from disuse and general weariness, as if the speaker wasn't used to long dusty roads or telling himself that he was quite foolish.
But, he was foolish. Very foolish.
Shaking out his long mane, Firewind made what had to be the hundredth attempt to reposition the leather bags so they wouldn't bounce against his sides and leave more welts. The reflection at his feet was probably laughing at him when he wasn't looking, even if his own frazzled appearance greeted him each time he did look back at the lazy stream.
"What possessed you to take that old trickster's dare and take on more than the usual trade, huh? Now you're stuck here. Carrying double the weight, for triple the distance. IDIOT!" He berated the reflection again, wincing when the movement caused a pack to brush against a particularly irritated rub.

In truth, it had been a long journey even to get to this point. Evangeline was not used to walking much these days, not since her 'herd' of sorts had settled down and bloomed into something quite magnificent. As wonderful as it was to see her family rebuilding itself, Eva never felt as though she'd fit in. It wasn't as though she was unwelcome--far from it. She simply felt as though she wasn't contributing as much as she could. So, as a result, she had started to wander. What else was out there? She knew the hell that Skinwalkers could wreck upon a family, so traveling alone was already a bad idea... but she stuck carefully to well-worn paths and tried not to wander too far into the wilderness.
Eventually, the sounds of a lazy babbling brook caught her attention, and Eva gratefully followed the sound to the source. She was parched, and the thought of cool water relieving her thirst was quite appealing indeed.... That was when she spotted the stallion. She froze for a moment, not so much afraid as she was confused. What was he wearing? She'd never seen such things before, and curiosity compelled her to call out, even if caution kept her hooves at bay.
"Excuse me," Eva began tentatively, still eyeing those leather bags with confusion. "What is it, exactly, that you're transporting?" She hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but he HAD been speaking aloud!
