The deep bass note of the unicorn's hum rumbled through his chest, his gait easy and smooth as he meandered over hills that were growing increasingly more sandy with time. There wasn't a set destination in his mind, really, and he didn't think he needed one. Life was so much better when you let it take you where it wanted! His mindless humming was interrupted when a new sound suddenly reached his ears, and the unicorn paused quietly to listen. The soft sound of waves crashing upon the shore...
The ocean.
With a soft, pleased chuckle, Kasthem tossed his head as though to get his shaggy mane out of his eyes.... which did absolutely nothing to help him. The bells in his mane chimed softly as he picked up the pace, not quite trotting as approached the water. The tang of salt and the distant cry of gulls was quite soothing. Good inspiration, Kasthem thought.
"Ocean waters..." He crooned almost inaudibly to himself, his hooves sinking into the soft sands. "What treasures might you hide...~?" Yes, yes, he could compose many a song from this. Perhaps he'd stay a while.

Today's weather felt warmer than usual. The ocean breeze was just a soft tickle through her long brown tresses. Naniahiahi deemed it was warm enough to go shell-hunting along the shore. Her hooves were submerged in the wet sands, constantly licked by the tide rushing in. Her fetlocks and ends of her tail were drenched with saltwater and carried specks of sand. She was bare of any accessories, embracing what the ocean had in store for her today.
Her hazel brown eyes searched the shore for any shells that may have washed up or any other goodies. She would scrape the sand for any promising signs of a shell to move on when there was nothing to be found. From time to time, her head would turn to the ocean, waiting for a green shell to pop up on the ocean's surface. Kona promised her goodies that she herself could not reach. She always had great hopes that Kona would bring her a big conch shell.

Strangers came and went through his life, just like any other thing. If he was lucky, they'd become acquaintances--even friends. But variety was the spice of life, and Kasthem never shied away from an opportunity to expose himself to everything this world had to offer. When he spotted the mare in the distance, he hummed a pleased note to himself before he started to amble over in her general direction. She was searching for treasures herself, it seemed, using delicate hooves to unearth them from their sandy beds. The way she continued to cast her gaze out to the ocean intrigued him. Perhaps she had a lover, their affections separated by miles and miles of shimmering blue...
Didn't that have a nice story to it? His hum took on a more melancholy quality, playing with different phrases in his head. Once he was close enough to initiate a proper conversation, he contented himself with standing in the surf before he called out to her. "Treasures from the sea. Isn't that thoughtful? We ought to give something back to it. Maybe it likes music."
He hummed to himself, like he'd thought of something amusing. Who didn't like music?

As she stared out to sea, her thoughts crept up on her. Living near the sea did get lonely. It seemed that the only time of the year that the beach seemed to bring in crowds was during the warm months, where the sun was a tad unbearable and the only relief from the sun would be a cool dip in the water. She would interact with a few of the strangers, maybe trade some of her accessories for some trinket of theirs, but none ever stayed or made an effort to visit. Maybe it was her fault that she couldn’t bare leaving the sea. it isn’t that she could not physically leave, she just never wanted to leave.
A melodic tune brought Naniahiahi out of her thoughts as a soft smile grew on her lips. It wasn’t close but she noticed it. It was a sound that was distinctly different from the soft crashing of the waves. She was almost glad it brought her out of her thoughts. She wasn’t one to think of such melancholic thoughts, but the loneliness did take a toll on her. Her hazel brown eyes found the owner of the voice and looked at him with a soft smile. “The sea does love it’s music.” She spoke softly with a tiny lick of an islander accent.
