The stallion moved through the trees quietly, a forelorn expression about his face as he glanced up towards the sky. There was a heavy scent of rain in the air. A storm. There was a storm coming. If he had to guess, it would most likely unleash its wrath very soon. Maybe as long as it took the two-leggers fire to die down to warm coals? Yes. That seemed right. His ears lowered at the thought of fire. It was a beautiful yet deadly thing. But he was glad when the two-leggers he lurked close to allowed him to come stay by the flickering flames. Its warmth was comforting. Or so it had been.
Chimera sighed heavily, a scowl forming. Things had been good when he was younger. Two-leggers sharing their fruits and camps. Until Death walked through the camp. Death with teeth and claws. Those that survived the attack were so afraid of his appearance, the stallion had fled to the woods he now resided in. It pained him they had seen him as a dark creature. He, who had played with their young ones and chased them in their funny games of tagging each other. But his eyes had glowed and horns had shone brightly in the fires light. They could not discern him from the skinwalker that had attacked.
Growling under his breath, Chimera kicked a rock in his path, stopping long enough to watch it sail through the air. He’d love dearly to be able to do that to a few creatures heads.

A laugh chimed softly into the growing gloom as little pawed feet padded quietly along the same path as the stallion. The purple mini’s ears were alert and her eyes twinkled. She could see Chimera’s ears flicker in her direction, a sign that he was listening to her approach.
“What the heck did that little rock do to you?” She said dramatically, stopping in line with the larger stallion. “Tell you how horrible this weather is about to become?”
Shaden flashed Chimera an innocent enough smile, eyes flicking towards the sky before settling on the dark eyes watching her with a frown. She knew he didn’t like when she snuck up on him. Or when she disappeared with no word. It wasn’t as if he was her babysitter! Though she was very aware of how protective he felt over her.
“Wonder if the Wardens are getting lighted up!” She laughed, leaning her small body against the stallions legs. This earned her a sigh. And a snort right after.

Some part of him that had been feeling pinched too tight eased at the sight of the mini mare. Heavens how she could make him go crazy with worry! He knew he didn’t have to. Really, he did. But Shaden was a feisty thing that would pick a fight with something five times her size. Like himself. It concerned him, knowing her history as he did, that she might take on more than she could chew. And what if he couldn’t help her that time? What if… something bad happened?
“I’m sure the Wardens are happily buzzing about.” He replied dryly, referring to the herd of dragon-like soquili they had enlisted the help of in the past. The herd were warriors. Hunters of skinwalkers. And at that time, when he’d first met the purple mini, that was what they had needed. The two had kept in contact with the herd since then, relaying information they could find on other herds and rumors of ‘walker sightings.
“Where were you?” He suddenly asked with more bite to his tone then he’d meant. This earned him a dirty look from the mare. “I wasn’t sure if I were to wait for you or continue on without you.” Chimera added airily.

Her lips curled up in a smile at thoughts of the Storm Wardens. The herd was full of storm crazy Walker hunters. And she loved them! They had accepted her and Chimera as friends (though clearly they could never be true Wardens as they lacked the telltale signs of being ‘Storm Touched’). The herd had been there to offer assistance when she’d desperately needed help.
A sad look flitted across her face as she thought of the past. There were days were she tried to maintain hope that her brother was still alive. That perhaps one day, she could find him. She refused to admit the worst. Refused to allow herself to believe the skinwalker had taken her entire family. As quickly as the sadness came, fury replaced it and she dug her claws into the ground. One day. One day she would find that skinwalker. And kill it. With the help of the Storm Wardens. And Chimera.
His question – which was more like a demand, really – got a bite right back with her thoughts being centered around skinwalkers and vengeance. “What, do I need to report to you every second?” She growled. Then ducked her head in embarrassment, trying to hide the emotions trying to show themselves on her face. “I… I’m sorry.” She murmured with a heavy sigh. Then she shook herself, trying to rid all the terrible thoughts from her mind.
“I was looking for a place we could stay tonight.” Shaden finally murmured, looking at her paws. “I caught scent of the rain and figured we’d need someplace.”

Chimera watched her closely, sensing there was more behind her growled reply. He’d seen that look on her many times. When she thought of her family. And the guilt at not being able to save her brother. He knew she still believed, deep down, that he was alive. And the stallion couldn’t fully say that he was dead either. They had found no signs to indicate one way or the other. The mini stallion had just been… gone.
“And did you by chance find us someplace?” He inquired, given her a gentle bump on the head. She snorted and danced out of reach. “Perhaps I should also put in a request for some food as well?” He said with a hint of mischief.

”Ha!” Shaden stuck her tongue out at the stallion. “You wish. You lazy a**. Find your own food. I already snacked on some wild berries I found.” She left off the fact that one of her little pouches currently slung along her back held more of said berries. As well as some of her art supplies she’d recently traded for.
It had been at the latest market she’d dragged Chimera to – or more like he followed her to – in order to sell some of her artwork. A traveler had told her of some new pigments the desert folk had acquired that would look beautiful on the rocks and tree park she painted on. So, Shaden had wanted to go check it out. And wound up trading for a few jars of the stuff. She hadn’t had the chance to paint anything yet, but maybe being stuck inside somewhere during the storm would be the perfect chance!
“In answer to your other question, I did find a place. There’s a shallow cave a little farther west of us. We’d have to back track a little, but I think we can make it there before the storm.” Not that she’d mind getting a little wet. Storms didn’t really bother her. Chimera on the other hand… she wasn’t sure why he disliked them so much.
“C’mon. I’ll show ya. And maybe we’ll happen to find some food along the way.”

Berries. She’d found berries. That sounded appealing enough. Though part of him craved something different. And less vegetation like. Chimera’s wings fluttered in agitation as he settled them against his back again. “I’m sure I’ll find something along the way.” He muttered under his breath, gaze flickering up towards the sky as a deep rumble of thunder sounded through the air. “Perhaps we could get moving then, small lady?” His lips twitched as Shaden’s ears flicked in annoyance at the pet name. It was part of why he enjoyed calling her ‘small’ in general to tease her. The reactions he got were amusing!
Nodding at the mini mare, he started walking along behind her, watching everything. The sway of the bushes as the wind picked at them. The shadows that moved along the trees. Always watching. Making sure nothing was hiding in the dark to attack the mare. She had trusted him as her protector. And more recently, her friend. Something he didn’t have many of.
Chimera took in a deep breath, letting the scents carried by the wind fill his lungs. Nothing. Except the growing scent of rain. The clouds were heavy with it. He wasn’t so sure they would make it back to this shallow cave Shaden had found. He kept his eye out for anything that might offer enough cover for the two of them. Another, louder, roll of thunder made the mare in front of him jump slightly, and Chimera had to laugh. Which earned him a dirty look. And made him laugh even more.

”Oh hush up!” Shaden growled, ears flattening as she listened to his laughter. It was a rather pleasant sound that he didn’t use enough of. Her gaze was on the path before her paws, looking for the prints she’d left to follow. The wind began to pick up, tossing her mane across her face and forcing her to shake her head to try and clear her vision.
“I hate to break it to ya… but we probably won’t make it back to the cave in time.” Knowing him, he’d already figured that out. “So if you happen to see someplace else that might be suitable-“ A loud crack of thunder and bright flash of lightning drowned out the rest of her sentence. Well, s**t! The storm was here. Drops of rain began to filter through the tree tops and plop on her nose. The annoyed snort behind the mare told her Chimera was getting hit too.

Great. Now he was getting wet. He hated the rain. And storms. They always signified ill omens in his experience.
A flash of lightning lit up the forest around them and he paused in his tracks, ears flicking forward. A little distance away, there seemed to be a couple large trees fighting for growth space. And it appeared to have a niche big enough that he could possibly squeeze his large frame into. Which meant Shaden would be just fine.
“I think we can take shelter among those two trees off to the left.” He said a little loud to be heard over the wind and thunder. “Come on.”
Taking the lead, Chimera extended his wings to block the rain from falling on Shaden’s head. She rolled her eyes at him but didn’t say anything. Which made a small smile cross his face. It only took them a few minutes to arrive at the trees. Getting a close up look, Chimera started to second guess if he’d fit underneath the roots creating a little ‘cave’ like setting. Sighing heavily, he shoved at Shaden to have her take shelter. She gave him a look that said she clearly understood he was not going to fit.
“I’ll be alright. You take shelter. I will be right here.” Once she was in, he got as close as he could and laid beside the opening. He did manage to wiggle enough to keep his head dry…

Shaden chose not to point out the obvious as she was shoved into the niche created by tree roots and the two trees leaning against each other. But she also knew Chimera was going to be so cranky after the storm passed! At least he wasn’t getting too wet. The advantage of the trees.
Crossing her paws, Shaden lowered her head on top of them, tilting her head just enough to look at Chimera. “I don’t know about this place yet.” She finally admitted. “It’s a nice area.” Her tail curled around her body as the stallion shifted enough to meet her gaze more easily. “But it just doesn’t feel like a place I want to call home.” Not yet.
Home. She wasn’t even sure what she was looking for in a home anymore. The one she knew had betrayed her. And then paid the ultimate price. That was not what she wanted to go through here. And then the thought of settling down while her twin was still out there? She very much believed that he was still alive. There was no room for anything else but that hope.

Chimera regarded the small mare. She was so tough and seeing her moments of uncertainty upset him. He didn’t know why, but he hated seeing her like this. In one of his rare forms of affection, the stallion nuzzled his friend in comfort.
“We can keep looking. That is the beauty of our traveling. We don’t have any specific place to be. Until we choose one.” He knew her reason for not wanting to settle yet. The belief her twin was still alive and out there somewhere. He was still skeptical about it, since it had been a Skinwalker that he’d been with. Yet they had heard rumors of a Skinwalker matching the description Shaden had given being in these lands. But they couldn’t take on a Skinwalker blindly. And it would take time to gather more information and actually find the demon creature.
“Once the storm passes, we’ll keep looking. Let’s not settle on one place so quickly.” They hadn’t truly explored this land yet. And the desert folk had given them a few areas they’d recommended checking out. “For now, we’ll try not to melt in the rain. Deal?” He teased.

Shaden snorted and flicked him in the head with her tail. “Why do you have to talk so sensible at times?” She sighed dramatically. “And please! A little rain won’t make you melt. Or else I wouldn’t have made it so easy for you to keep following me.” A lie, she and he both knew.
She liked his company too much. But what he said was true. They had only just come to this land and barely begun to explore it. While this forest area had been one of the recommended locations the desert dwellers had told them to look at, they had other places to check out.
“I think I’d like to keep exploring.” She murmured after yawning. “And see if we can find more information on where that demonic thing can be found.” And her twin.
